At least 14 people have been killed in a shooting at a Batman film premiere in the US city of Denver, police say.

About 50 people have been injured in the incident at the cinema complex in the suburb of Aurora.

Witnesses say a gunman wearing a gas mask opened fire during a midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises.

A man was arrested in a car park nearby in possession of a rifle and hand-gun. He told police that explosives were stored at his home.

Police chief Dan Oates told reporters that an apartment block in the north of Aurora had been evacuated as a consequence of that information.

More weapons may have been left in the cinema, he said.

'No terrorism link'
The incident at the Century 16 cinema complex began at approximately 00:30 local time (06:30 GMT).

"Witnesses tell us he released some sort of canister. They heard a hissing sound and some gas emerged and the gunman opened fire," the police chief said.

An eyewitness said the man was dressed all in black wearing a riot helmet, bullet proof vest and goggles
"The shooting apparently went on for some time," he said.

Ten people were killed at the cinema and four others died later at hospital of their wounds, he said.

The FBI, which is working with the police, say there is no terrorism link so far in their investigations, ABC reports.

Many ambulances at the scene and the Swedish Medical Center, not the area's main hospital, told the BBC it had received several gunshot victims and expected more.

One witness said a man in a bullet-proof vest and riot helmet had been "slowly making his way up the stairs and just firing - picking random people".

An eyewitness told the BBC that about 30 or 40 minutes into the film a man came into the right-hand exit nearest the front row.

"I'm pretty sure wearing [a] mask. He fired a canister into the air - it could have been a smoke bomb or tear gas," the woman, identified only as Pam, told the BBC.

"It shot it right into the air, then I started to hear the bang, bang, bang of a gun.

"I crawled my way through the row, luckily the exit was close to where I was sitting so I got out pretty fast. I heard more shots as I left," she said.

A witness in the next-door theatre told 9News that when he heard loud bangs and a lot of smoke and initially thought they were live special effects put on by the cinema.

Projectiles came through the wall from the neighbouring screening, he said.

So apparently a 3 month old baby was among the injured in the cinema shooting. Who the hell takes a 3 month old baby to a midnight screening of a loud, violent Batman movie?? The mind boggles.

I went to see Prometheus and a woman had a child with her that couldn't have been more than 6. Some people should just not be allowed to procreate.

But more importantly, who the hell shoots a bunch of innocent people at a movie premiere?

Some people are saying that the movie has been 'tainted' and that Warners should pull it. What do you think?

Thousands of people are murdered in 3rd world countries in genocides on a regular basis and nobody in this country bats an eyelash. Then a measly (in the comparative grand scheme of things, not literally) 14 people die in Colorado and suddenly it's the worst thing that has ever happened, and some people are actually saying WB should literally be forced to pull TDKR from theaters. They want a company that employs thousands of people, their fellow citizens no less, to lose hundreds of millions of dollars because of one psychopath. This country never ceases to amaze.

Indeed. The very idea of pulling the film because of this is beyond ludicrous. Just because ONE nutjob decided to vent his madness at a screening of The Dark Knight Rises, does not mean the film should be affected in any way. This dreadful event has nothing whatsoever to do with the film itself.

300 people died in Syria yesterday. In ONE day. We can't just stop going about our lives because of evil scum.

EW.com posted a twitter timeline of people tweeting before and after the incident. It's horrific to read posts from a girl that ended up dying about how excited she was about going and how she had to force a guy to go with her. I have no words.

it is indeed ridiculous to be scared to go to this movie just because of the incident. next up, people should stop flying because airplanes may crash.

what really disturbs me about those tweets is that some people attending the screening weren't that shocked to keep themselves out of typing messages on their cell phones. i could be wrong, though. i'm not sure how human psychology works in such extreme cases.

Many people didn't know what was going on. Some thought it was part of the movie.

Warner Bros doesn't want to lose money. They're now removing all the guns from the advertisements.

Certain matters affect people psychologically, even unwittingly. They may connect The Dark Knight Rises = massacre. Result = not paying to see the movie. A downer. It's marketing psychology and has been around for decades.

they thought it was part of the movie? was it supposed to be a 3D screening going a step too far?

warners may have a point when readjusting some of the film's aspects for the american audience. thank god we're not all americans, though. i'm sure the film will be screened as originally intended for screen audiences in europe.

The soundtrack was blaring, and there were apparently balconies. I think it's been reported that he timed the killing for a certain part of the movie where a blast goes off in the film. Whatever happened, not everyone was aware of what was going on. They were ambushed, and tear gas was used. When you start shooting infants, your ass is grass! The dude had an arsenal, and bulletproof crap from head to toe. He had a automatic weapon, a rifle, and two handguns, not counting the grenades. God bless America!

The film is not going to be altered. The promotion is going to be.

The last two films have been steeped in tragic events.

It pisses me off that there's all these idiots who only care about how this is going to hurt its box office success. What a bunch of little corporate Fascists. Like most corporations, they'll gladly walk over dead bodies to make $$. They don't care about anybody, and then treat everyone who works below them like trash.

Beautiful Stranger is the #1 example of a typical American bonehead, who has been brainwashed by the Free Market dick sqad. Boo hoo, they're workers are going to be hurt by this film not playing. They're not going to be affected at all. Studio execs won't be able to afford 3,000,000 ivory backscratchers this year. Aww. :chuckle: Idiot.

Any alterations are the sole decision of Warner Bros. It's all because of M-O-N-E-Y! Take a course in Consumer Psychology, BS.
