David Bowie announces first album in 10 years and releases new single; A new album called 'The Next Day' is due in March and there's a single available for download right now

David Bowie has announced his first new album in 10 years.

Titled 'The Next Day', the album has been produced by Bowie's longtime collaborator Tony Visconti and will be released in the UK and most countries worldwide on March 11. Australia will get the albums three days earlier on March 8, while American fans will have to wait until March 12.

The album's standard edition contains 14 tracks with the 'Deluxe Version' adding three more. Both are available to pre-order on iTunes now.

To mark the album announcement, which comes on the day of his 66th birthday (January 8, 2013), Bowie has released its first single immediately. Titled 'Where Are We Now?', the track is available for download on iTunes now. You can watch the single's video, directed by New York artist Tony Oursler, by scrolling down to the bottom of this article and clicking 'play'.

The song is a stately ballad whose lyrics reference Bowie's Berlin years. He mentions several Berlin landmarks including Potsdamer Platz, a square in the city centre, and KaDeWe, the city's most famous department store. The chorus goes: "Where are we now? Where are we now? The moment you know, you know you know."

Bowie's last album, 'Reality', was released in 2003 and he wrapped up his most recent tour in 2004 after he fell ill. In recent years, the singer has kept a remarkably low profile, something which the album announcement on his official website acknowledged.

The announcement reads: "In recent years radio silence has been broken only by endless speculation, rumour and wishful thinking ....a new record...who would have ever thought it, who'd have ever dreamed it! After all David is the kind of artist who writes and performs what he wants when he wants...when he has something to say as opposed to something to sell. Today he definitely has something to say."

The full tracklisting for 'The Next Day' is as follows:

'The Next Day'
'Dirty Boys'
'The Stars (Are Out Tonight)'
'Love Is Lost'
'Where Are We Now?'
'Valentine's Day'
'If You Can See Me'
'I'd Rather Be High'
'Boss Of Me'
'Dancing Out In Space'
'How Does The Grass Grow'
'(You Will) Set The World On Fire'
'You Feel So Lonely You Could Die'
'Heat'

Deluxe Version bonus tracks

'So She'
'I'll Take You There'
'Plan'

Wow! #1 in Ireland too!

Very nice song indeed. He's actually one of those MAJOR artists whose work I've never really investigated. Where do you Bowieheads think I should start?

I think it's always best to start with the debut and advance chronologically when investigating an act for the first time.

Really? Hmm, that's definitely not how I would generally do it. I'd prefer to start with what's generally considered the very best album by an artist, or a Best Of. If someone asked me where I should start with Madonna's discography, never in a million years would I point them in the direction of her debut album, good though it may be. I would always advice them to listen to her very best albums or compilations.

Well if you just want the hits then the compilations are the best route, but if you really want to know an act go through the whole catalog and observe their artistic progression.

I don't necessarily want just the hits and I definitely don't want progression. I want to see if I like his stuff, that's all. If I didn't know any of Madonna's stuff and I listened to her first album, I wouldn't bother listening to any of her others. I don't want to start by listening to something that isn't their very best.

What do you think is his best album?

I'm not THAT familiar with his catalog yet, the latter stuff has pretty much escaped me, lol. 'The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars' may be a good start. It's very highly regarded and pretty much sums up his early career.

I hate punk, but LOVE some of his songs. Any Madonna fan would love these:

plus opening of Lost Highway is the music perfection.

But mostly I don't get him. New song is good.

What does Bowie have to do with punk music?
Everything. He's a classic punk musician.... Even his latest album is mostly punk.

River - I would start with either

Hunky Dory or Ziggy Stardust then perhaps Aladin Sane, Heroes, Low & Diamond Dogs for the 'classic' Bowie

'Let's Dance' for the most 'pop' album

Outside for some noisy left-field Bowie

Or if you like the new song I recommend Hours, Heathen & Reality (Reality is a bit more patchy but there are some gems on it).

I've missed a few brilliant albums off there but that should get your toes wet ;)

I can't answer that - but I can tell you that my first favourite was Hunky Dory, then Ziggy Stardust, then Low. I was really into Outside when it came and in the last few years I have been really into Hours & Heathen and a lot of his more down tempo stuff.

oh, and Diamond Dogs!! it's up there for sure - but it took me a while to 'get' it for some reason. It's in a simar vein as Ziggy but it took a lot longer to win me over, it's definitely one of my favourites though.
