Yeah, she needs to change bigtime. Something darker and edgier for sure. These songs need a lot of work though, but maybe they're an indication of her future direction at least! |

i sense a darker and edgier direction was her original intention as indicated by those left overs and skirt, only her label/management freaked out and forced her moving back to safer territories. this might explain her complete lack of enthusiasm during this era. her flopping might give her the incentive to try things her own way next time, which should be soon. i've read there's been quite a drama regarding this whole situation and she's had a hard time making ends meet for the tour production. |

And only 6 songs from KMO album making the tour set list seems a bit odd. Unless shes cutting her losses - she knows what the fans want. |

Woah...go to 2:58 and listen to her comments about Roc Nation. For Kylie, that's pretty scathing. There's clearly some serious shit going down right now. |

wow, u can tell she's clearly pissed off even though trying to give a diplomatic answer. i'd love to know what went so horribly wrong behind the scenes. i bet she regretted joining the voice, which was a decision encouraged by rocnation. rumor also has it they've given her a hard time with the budget for this tour. people in the know have also hinted they signed her believing she had a solid fanbase that would buy her albums and tour tickets no matter what, only they were clueless when realizing the latest album flopped and the tour is far from sold out. i'd be intrigued to learn more details. the fact is, she seems extremely uncomfortable extending this album campaign with a tour. she'd probably have cancelled it had she known the whole era would evolve to a fiasco. at least she's professional enough managing to present another highly enjoyable spectacle - judging by those youtube clips of the opening night her stage charisma is on top form. and i actually prefer this scaled down show from the kitsch extravaganza of les folies. |

She's way too much of a pro to let behind-the-scenes drama impact on her performances/touring. I reckon there's a LOT of gritted teeth going on right now, but she'll get through it. In many ways, she's the opposite of someone like Gaga, where it's all tears and drama and "woe is me". Kylie has always been a bit like Madonna in that respect. She's one steely character in the public eye. In fairness, her career has been messed around for many, many years now. Since the first couple of albums, she's only really ever had the occasional moment when everything's going swimmingly. It's time she did exactly what she wants to do, not her team or managers. |

quite spot on that comment about gaga's stance, riv. ultimately, i think that's they key to her problem and the reason why she may never achieve madonna or kylie's longevity, no matter how talented she may be - and she is, pretty much so. those older bitches have managed to distance their real selves from their pop personas, and this is why they've had the stamina to hit back whenever they were brought down. madonna was achieving that continuously, kylie to a lesser extend but then her career has always been way more of a rollercoaster.

it's about time kylie stops chasing another head-sized hit cause it ain't gonna happen, focuses on breaking trends to the mainstream rather following them and releases the music she wants. regardless of their actual quality, it's pretty apparent those garibay penned songs point to the direction she has at heart. at this point, there's nothing left to loose. |

what a stunning show this was. such an amazing vocal performance and a charismatic stage presence. younger bitches in the game should take a lesson or two. i'm now officially devastated not being able to see her on tour this time around. she's looking both smokin hot and on top form for the first time in a decade. |

Fairly scathing review of the show from a PJ poster I very much respect: After the last two shows left me underwhelmed in parts I was gonna hang on until I saw the setlist and reviews for this tour from my trusted PJ peers before I bought a ticket. As luck would have it I got a last minute invite from some close friends. It was all very off the cuff but I ended up having a fantastic night with some close friends and some of Kylies crew from both past and present times. All the signs were there for a good show. Whenever you are in the vicinity of Kylie concert you are never more than three feet away from some queen knocking on 40’s door. It’s as equally comforting as it is distressing. As the years have gone by the audiences jean sizes get bigger and the botox is more prevalent. After half a bottle of white wine swimming amongst a “Minogue of gays” (the collective term for a gathering of gay man), we made our way to Pizza Express for quick bite. We talked about the show and how the album had performed blah blah blah when I looked to my left and who had just come in for a cheeky Veneziana but Pete Waterman with a lady friend. Another sign we were in for a treat. The stars were aligning. We took to our seats to the opening strains of Les Sex. The seats were amazing and we were very lucky to have them. We were in camp company as Steve Strange, Alan Carr and David Walliams were sat by us. Some fashion designers were pointed out to me and I’m pretty sure Rita Ora was about five rows in front getting her life to Love At First Sight. Everyone in our section seemed pumped and of course there was a hardcore fanbase too. Screams as she came to the stage and it seemed to be building up nicely. Until we realised the sound wasn’t about to burst into a crescendo at any point. My first and main issue: The sound system was in no way big enough to fill the 02. Not a chance. Either that or it was turned to about 45%. It sucked the entire life out of the opening. I’ve had noisier neighbours. People around us were having conversations without raising their voices. It was weird and it pulled the rug out from under the excitement that had been built up. Two minutes through Les Sex and people seemed to be sitting down. Most of the casuals probably didn’t even know it. The excitement of her appearing on stage lasted all of 120 seconds and we were into mom dancing. The costume was unflattering and made her look a bit mutton dressed as lamb. Kylie is gorgeous with a killer figure and doesn’t need to be made to look like she belongs in a backroom at the Moulin Rouge that caters to niche needs. In My Arms followed. Let’s be honest this wasn’t really a hit and a straight representation of the album version fell flat and left the audience cold. After Les Sex we needed an out and out classic to ramp up the energy levels which were sorely lacking at this point. Kylie reverts to her usual shouting certain lyrics to gain a reaction trick. “I’m Listening” (see “Do You Like What You See?” in Spinning Around and “I try to STOP” in WOW for other tired examples). I’m not sure what the two male dancers dressed as extras from peaky blinders were doing either. Odd. Timebomb – I can’t remember it happening. So far the setlist felt a bit hollow, it didn’t get much better with… Sexy Love – The pre-song dialogue was a bit “Working men’s club”. She doesn’t perform this great vocally and can come off a bit nasaly. It’s anything but sexy. This was the first example of the stage being TOO BIG. The choreography, if you can call it that, was all over the place. This section was crying out for close proximity, interaction, some sexual tension, flirting. The dancers look like they had been told to “Fill the god damn space” Maybe to make up for the lack of set. This whole number was a bit Benidorm caberet in latex. Mom dancing was back again. Poor Roxy and the other backing singer looked ludicrous in those bloody Lips headdresses. The spoken links between songs were all a bit Des O’Connor. “hey this crowd looks sexy but you can’t help it right? In fact I think this crowd looks WOW”!! I know folk hate WOW but I love it soo much. Even this couldn’t raise the energy in the room. The mom dancing in a latext mini skirt and feathers hat made her and the girls look like a lost hen party. Album version was performed. Section Two Step Back In Time – This reminded me of Madonnas Music Inferno from Confessions. Similar vocoder use, build up and retro sample. It was the first actual decent re-invention of any of her songs. Nice Rappers Delight / Chic sample with a touch of Madeon style production thrown in. A welcome oldie but ultimately the least popular Rhythm Of Love track. Any of the others may have lifted the energy in the room which was still very low. I was waiting for something more stylistic to identify that we were in a new section of the show. It was just more black white and red. There must have been a special on any fabric of that colour down Brick Lane because the entire show utilized only those three colours 90% of the time. Step back led nicely into Spinning Around. This song is pure joy. It was the first time the energy rose significantly and the whole arena came together. Six songs in and we were finally started. The dancers weren’t ten feet away from each other, Kylie had some moves and we were off with some complimentary choreography for the first time….and then the dancers all fucked off and left her to it???!!! I loved the “To Be Real” nod they used in this song as it always reminds me of that era. Kylie seemed into this song, the costume was flattering and had some movement to it. Next the start of the music sounded like the BIR remix of Where Is The Feeling but it soon built into Your Disco Needs You . Lazyography took over again. Was this pitched down on this tour? The dancers Mondrian costumes were ludicrous. It looked like she was dancing with Bertie Basset and the dolly mixtures. I expected a gaysplosion on this one but it didn’t really take off like I thought it would. The opera notes were amazing as ever though and the dramatic Eurovison hand clench finish left us chuckling. I liked it but we were in full pastiche swing. On A Night Like This saw Kylie alone again on a huge stage. She did a few dodgy adlibs and the lazers looked good in the auditorium. Slow – Good god the energy ground to a halt. Empty stage with too much general wash with Kylie and one male dancer who just improvised break dancing around her. It was so boring an uninspired. The Chemical Brothers remix bit at the end amped the energy up half a notch but it was too little too late. The 40% of the audience who weren’t sat down at the end of On A Night Like This were now firmly bums down. Section Three. PWL Medley . – The thought of hearing Enjoy Yourself in an arena after going to the anti-tour made me giddy. I got two lines. It’s always a joy to hear the PWL stuff however although I felt that this section for a pure for da gayz pandering and I resented that a bit. “let’s do some Barbie and Ken Aqua theme with lots of pink. We’ll get the boys to take their clothes off by the end and we’ll plough through four of five of the old tracks”. I felt bad for Pete. The I Should Be So Lucky bathtub moment however was inspired. Skirt can fuck off – Four Jessie J lookylikes did some faux sexy routines whilst three Asian queens in our section got their life. No one else gave a fuck. Some nice shots on screen of her that kind of harked back to the car scenes in the Shocked video. Sexercise – Actually sounded groovy in the stadium. Those balls should have been on sale at the mech stand for sure. Costume? Kylie in a black basque/leotard…thrilling!! Nowhere near as iconic as it could have been. This should have been the press snap shot moment. Instead she just rolled onto a ball for the last pose of the song. The Partition chair dance this wasn’t. Nudity sounded like it samples Lil Louis French Kiss and it blended into Cant Get you Out Of My Head”. I moaned when I saw this on the setlist as its been done to death but like Spinning Around, thank god for it. The crowd were on their feet again. This was my fave outfit (even though it was fucking black and white again). She looked genuinely sexy. The leather cap was very Kylie of Finland. They could have played this up a lot more though and again it lacked fourth wall. The La La La Acapella interlude was a bit Jane Macdonald. Need You Tonight – Sexiest thing on the tour. This was a Kylie moment and the first of the night. It was controlled, not pandering, not overplayed and deathly sexy. I wonder what was going through her mind as she sang this? It was the first time I felt connected to her and the first moment she screamed LIVING ICON from the stage. It was a proper superstar moment and I felt like we’d been let in on something very private. Loved it!! Kids – Moan about it all you like but it always gets a bloody great reaction live and tonight was no exception. Beautiful – Dear lord. All that sexual tension and now we’re left to sleep in the wet patch. Kylie walks from the back of the stage to the front of the stage in a white dress singing this tepid Martine Mcutcheon B side, whilst Put Yourself In My Place was at home putting its feet up watching Corrie. I was hoping for some eureka moment with this song as there were feint glimmers at the Olyimpics. Sadly not. Kiss Me Once – I was waiting for this song with more anticipation than anything else. It sounded flat and wasn’t the moment it should have been. This should have been the All The Lovers –Les Follies moment. Pure Euphoria…urm..she just stood there in that white dress. Then she jigged about a bit. Something felt off. The song is a first album throwback and I love it but stood there in that white dress alone on a huge empty stage there was something a bit “Whatever Happened To Baby Jane” about it. It made me feel a bit sad. She sounded shrill at parts and all in all the song was just thrown away and wasted. If it had come after a huge energetic number it would have felt sweet and sincere. Instead it felt empty. Get Outta My Way – This song is the best thing she has recorded in 10 years. It sounded fucking huuuuge in that arena. It should have opened the show or sat second in the setlist and the general tone would have been massively improved. I can’t think of any song in anyone’s catalogue that received more a pop injustice than this song. Nice Versace-esque back ground visuals. “What’s the worst thing , that can happen to you?”…THAT costume love. Beyond dreadful and it looked totally out of place with the rest of the dancers styling. The dancers were miles away from her again. Fortunately the energy of the song seemed to burst through the arena even at half volume. A joy. I didn’t need to see what else was happening on stage as the whole block was getting their life. Love At First Sight – Cheesy Intro AGAIN! Played to death but it was like a shot of adrenalin to the crowd. More boring move – pose choreography again.. All The Lovers – Odd general wash lighting and Kylie was alone on the stage again which seemed like the umpteenth time. No huge mirror balls or anything that induced a romantic atmosphere. It was played straight and step digged til the end. Into The Blue wasn’t quite the drop in energy I thought it would be. The truth is the verses aren’t as sing alongy as Lovers so it’s not as inviting as a song. I think that’s kind of the point though. It’s meant to feel a bit lonely…..and she was. Alone on stage again that is. To sum up. I realise the above sounds scathing and maybe a little harsh but it truly was the worst Kylie show I’ve been too. Her publicy saying the tour would be stripped back felt like an advance apology. It’s echoes the same sentiment as her explanation of the I Was Gonna Cancel video. It echoes her awkward comments about her relationship with Roc Nation on the GMTV interview. My belief is Kylie is not happy, Kylie is pissed at the lack of budget for this tour and the general lack of investment. I think she deserves better than last night and she’s certainly capable of it. The business man in me thinks they paid a fortune for co-writes, uber producers, collabs and exec producers for the album upfront. The album didn’t perform and her tour budget was slashed by about 75%. They banked on the public shelling out for tickets based on her good track record and the amazing reviews of Les Follies. The truth is there were two main props for this entire show. A Lips couch and a bathtub. …oh and four exercise balls and hoovers. The costumes must have cost less than 10k for the entire cast and the video backdrops were of the lowest standard I’ve seen from her. Had this show been performed in smaller venues I don’t think the show as a whole would have felt so half soaked. It would have been way better in Shepherds Bush Empire than the 02 because quite simply, it couldn’t fill the space. The sound system wasn’t even up to spec. They splashed out on a catwalk that was completely under utilised and ultimately all it did was make the square footage of the stage look even bigger, underdressed and empty. The setlist looked good at first glance because it’s hit heavy though the interpretations and deliveries were often lazy, ill conceived and uncreative. The chorography was the worst I have seen from her. The onstage energy and pace was consistently second to third gear. There was no fun interaction with the dancers, I didn’t get that typical energy from them and everything felt very much like going through the motions. Like there was an element of resentment. Maybe that’s why the Michael Hutchence song resonated with me so much as she was able to step out of her “Kylie” cage for a minute. A personal view: Kylie represents quite a bit to gay men of a certain age and in the UK there’s affection for her that’s very unique. Whatever her age she is still the nations adopted sweetheart. As fans we want, Hell we NEED Kylie to be good and Kylie to be relevant, which is why the KMO thread is filled with such endless shoulda, woulda, couldas. With that in mind there were parts of the show where she felt like a parody of herself and it seemed to breed a slight sense of unease amongst the audience. Looking around me I just had a feeling that some people were quietly checking themselves. Had we become parodies of ourselves? Something didn’t feel convincing. It’s hard to explain and you might think I’m mad, but I didn’t sleep last night thinking about it. Something bothered me and it was more than a half hearted concert. Kylies career has always been about the journey. The highs and the lows, the unlucky In love, the gay best friend, the unmarried pop starlet who fought back from a life threatening illness, didn’t have a family and chose her career and fans over everything else. She’s not like Madonna or Britney or Cher who have those things. I think when a lot of gay men see Kylie they see themselves in some form, and the looming question after last night for me was, Is the party over? Summer is done and Autumn has arrived. Are the Garibay & Kylie soundcloud offerings an attempt at re affirming some creative relevancy. I remain unconvinced by them on the whole. I am in no way saying her career is over or anything like that but after three, (some would argue four), difficult album campaigns and ever diminishing returns on singles and albums, the live experience was where she really was relevant and last night that too seemed as risk. It’s given me lots of personal food for thought and that’s why I said it stings. If previous Kylie concerts have been people dancing in the aisles, Kiss Me Once was the sound of an audience sitting down. |

i also put this certain pj poster in high regard, but i believe he's overreacting a bit. it's one thing to expect the best from a fave popstar of yours, but it's another to expect the impossible. shall we just be realistic about kylie's current situation. this is a woman in her mid 40s whose last major hit is over 4 years old, her latest studio album flopped and yet was obliged to embark on a tour supposedly set to promote her recent material, which is probably unknown by the vast majority of audiences attending her show. she did her best limiting the album tracks to a minimum and packing the setlist with hits the hardcore fans may find boring at this point, however it's wiser she resonates with the casual fans in an attempt to regain their interest and make them remember why they loved her in the first place. it's the exact strategy madonna used when setting up the reinvention tour. so people were not on their feet when the likes of les sex, sexy love and sexercize came up. no big deal, really. as far as i'm aware of, madonna, rihanna, gaga (add the popstar of your preference) also contained a number of potential loo break numbers on their latest tour setlists. by the way, in my arms is one of her biggest hits in the european continent ever since head, she'd be nuts not to include it when she's bringing this tour to venues all over europe. not to mention it was far bigger of a uk hit and way superior of a pop song than get outta my way - best thing she's recorded in a decade, SERIOUSLY? oh, and step back in time is probably the only one out of the rhythm of love singles that translates well on tour - what do i have to do and shocked are fantastic on record yet they sounded terribly flat the most times she's performed them. stage is stripped down, but still looks expensive enough. it's slick and very impressive when the lighting effects are in full gear. however, i do agree a group of just eight dancers is shockingly poor for an arena show of this scale - not to mention kylie's show standards (as i can recall, for the purpose of les folies at least double that number of dancers was recruited). screen visuals do look rather good from what i've seen. oh the shock and horror, kylie's not into heavy choreography herself. AGAIN. well, thank goodness for that. she's charming and lovely when dancing freestyle and can get away with participating in a basic routine, but that should be it. her strength as a performer is delivering live vocals. nasal or not, her vocals are undisputedly 100% live and i feel she doesn't get that much credit for that by neither the critics nor the public. it's only people in attendance of her shows being aware of that while having been impressed by the total lack of lip syncing. name one other pop bitch able to nail that falsetto on your disco needs you. i could go on looning up forever but i'm just gonna shut up. rumor has it 4 more garibay tracks are set to be unveiled by the end of the european leg of the tour in late november. so basically she's gifting an alternate album just because she wants this material to be heard. apparently her record label is furious, yet not legally permitted from stopping her. |

Another dire review from a fan on PJ: Going to have to agree with the negative reviews I'm afraid - in 10 years of Kylie Concert attendance, that was by some way the worst I've ever seen. Obviously, it was Kylie songs and Kylie so it wasn't a total waste of a night, but yeesh... Biggest problem was the set - ugly, sparse, cheap, pointless, dreadful. Some people leaned on it. Occasionally someone stood on it. Otherwise it was a waste of space. The silk draping that concealed it before the start was actually more impressive than the thing it was supposed to be revealing. The staging was also equally uninspired, bar a few numbers. Obviously, her first entrance has been a highlight on all the shows so far. Here, she pops up on a sofa singing one of the interminable and indistinguishable sex songs from the album. A friend of mine knows the designer of early Kylie shows, and another knows the choreographer of the same shows, and both say the same thing: the key is to build the show around Kylie, surround her, support her. Here, she spent vast stretches of the night completely exposed on a ginormous empty stage with just that useless bit of scaffolding behind her. I actually didn't mind her costumes much, but the dancers' costumes were dire. Highlights were there but few and far between: the PWL bit was ace, I did like the staging of Slow, the Jean Michel Jarre-y lighting was pretty impressive. But overall, all very disappointing really, and I can only echo what was said here - her heart wasn't always in it, maybe it would have worked ok in a smaller venue etcetc. As we know from Wilderness Years Kylie, you don't need huge amounts of money, but you do need imagination and heart, and both were sorely lacking. |

well, he might have a point about the show working better in smaller venues rather than in arenas as indicated by the itunes festival concert, which i thought was absolutely fantastic and showcased her charisma as a live performer in the best way possible. i know i'm being entirely subjective but judging from my own experience the issue with kylie is she really doesn't need a spectacular, out of this world production to shine on stage. having been in attendance of the budget version of the x tour i was completely underwhelmed by the lack of those impressive props and the original stage at first, but her effort in putting on a show regardless of limitations and her ability to entertain was so admirable and fascinating to witness that completely made me forget about my initial frustration. well the fact i was in front row right in the middle of the stage helped too as i was so starstruck seeing her this close. anyway, this does seem to be a relatively basic show, the whole concept reminds me a lot of the money can't buy launch concert of body language, which i've always been very fond of. remember, this is a tour carrying the burden of a flop album, therefore its production was probably a very hard task to execute. most likely she'd rather cancel it had it been her way but she went along with it and gave her best under the current circumstances. oh and i do believe it's a way superior tour than the previous les folies, which was a prime example of how to spend a huge budget on a kitch, uninspired extravaganza. now, that was a boring, cringe worthy, horrible show. the spectacular encore aside i've never managed to watch it in its entirety even once. |
