Texas have confirmed plans to release a new album later this year. The band will release The Conversation as their eighth studio album in May, after signing a new deal with [PIAS] Recordings, reports Music Week. "When we started talking with [PIAS] we were really impressed by their enthusiasm and passion for our new music and how they work in a very modern and artist-friendly way," singer Sharleen Spiteri said. "We are really excited about starting a brand new phase of our career with our eighth studio album and a brand new label partner." The album will see founding members Spiteri and Johnny McElhone reunite after a six-year-long hiatus. Texas have sold over 20 million albums worldwide since forming back in 1986. |

Is there an interest in Texas any more? I used to love them but their last albums were patchy at best. |

Yeah, they had a run of 2 or 3 brilliant albms, then it all went a bit pear-shaped. |

There's usually a couple of decent singles per album. Sharleen has got a LOVELY voice. (Find it hard to forgive her that movie songs album, though. Christ, that was a horror.) |

Sharleen Spiteri: 'Liz Hurley's a fat b*tch who can f*** off' Sharleen Spiteri has said that Liz Hurley is a "fat bitch" who can "f**k off". The Texas frontwoman told the Evening Standard that Hurley once invited her to dinner and pretended not to know who she was. "I said, 'Oh hello', all polite like, and she was like, 'And you are... ?'. Well, that was it," Spiteri said. "'Ali Baba,' I said. And the whole table drew back in their seats and you could see them thinking, 'Oh God, this is going off'. "See, she's rude, Liz Hurley, and I don't like rude. What's she famous for anyway? Wearing a dress with her tits hanging out? Well, she's a fat bitch and she can f*** off." Of her infamous altercation with Paris Hilton, where the socialite refused to stop standing on everyone's jackets at a party, she added: "She wasn't listening, she was wasted. So I filled my straw with my drink and I blew it. That got her attention. "'Have some manners', I said. And she started with all her nonsense. So I said, 'F**k off or I'll kick the s**t out of you'. That's how it works where I'm from." She later told Digital Spy: "It's mad that people still ask me about it. To be honest, I was absolutely mortified. I didn't want to be associated at all - in the papers or not - with Paris Hilton." Spiteri cited Chrissie Hynde and Debbie Harry as her role models, adding: "They never did tits and arse but they are hot. "And it's not just about being 'a really strong woman'. I'm a straight-talking person but I don't view that as necessarily 'strong'. I don't feel different in anybody's company. I either like you or I don't." |

Texas interview: 'Label was too busy with Rihanna for us' This year, Texas will mark their 25th anniversary with new album The Conversation. Their illustrious career has spawned 35 million sales and placed frontwoman Sharleen Spiteri as one of the most prominent Scottish singers in music. Digital Spy caught up with the star to chat about the band's new collection, why they decided to leave Universal music and why she will only download full albums. Congratulations on new track 'The Conversation'; how have you found the reaction after debuting new material after an eight-year absence? "It's been unbelievable. When we said we had a new Texas record people were like, 'Ah, OK.' Then we put it on and they were like, 'Oh, OK!.' It's like a proper Texas record. Now it's whether people actually want to own it or not now." You immediately hear that the band is refreshed and ready for a return. "There's not a lot of bands who get the opportunity to keep going back to the beginning. We had our first breakthrough in '89, then we had another wave in '97, so this again is us being away. We'd finished our contract with Universal, we were in no rush to sign any record contract. Then in 2011 we started playing new songs in our set and people started getting wind we had made a new Texas album. All these independent labels started approaching us, but we told them that when we finished it, they'd get to hear it." Why did you take such a long break? "The truth is that by the time of the last record Red Book, people were still nice about us, but we were the band that showed up at every f**king party. We were at a moment where they liked us, but we were passing people by. We felt like we had to knock it on the head for a bit." Is your new single 'The Conversation' a good indication of what we can expect from the album? "I think there's a lot of different moods within the album, but we've definitely gone back to our roots at the beginning. We've gone back to what we're all about, but the record still sounds modern and current. We worked with friends - like Richard Hawley and Bernard Butler - so it was nice that there were no negotiations on how much it was going to cost, it was just mates suddenly writing songs together. It had a relaxed feel to it and I think that's what you'll hear." You're releasing it through indie label [PIAS]; why did you decide to leave your major label deal? "We had a fantastic time at Universal. I mean we sold 35 million records, so there's no complaint there. But I think we weren't going to be the top of Universal's priority list - they're too busy with GaGa and Rihanna. All we wanted for this record is to have the best possible chance with it. "We didn't think we'd get that at Universal, whereas [PIAS] phoned us once a month for a year asking us if it was ready. They understand the record and when we went into their offices people were relaxed - they didn't look like they were living in fear of getting called into an office and losing their job within the afternoon. It's difficult because you can't expect people to work their arses off if they don't know if they're going to be there at the end of the day because of mergers and this, that and the next thing." The Conversation marks the 25th anniversary of the band's career. Do you have any particular highlights? "The fact that we're still here! There's so much stuff that has happened to us throughout those 25 years, but it's the fact we still love doing it so much. The highlight is when you're writing up the setlist and you're adding the new stuff, but then you go: 'Black Eyed Boy', 'Summer Son', 'Inner Smile', 'Say What You Want'. You've got a list of songs you've created and gathered through the years that can make it a show. It's really exciting to have that." Kylie reinterpreted her greatest hits to celebrate her 25th anniversary last year - is that something you ever considered doing? "We've done stuff like that in the past - like The BBC Sessions - and because we're musicians, we've done that loads of times before - like playing them in different ways for radio, acoustic sessions and stuff like that. Plus, I did The Movie Songbook a few years ago where I had Phil Ramone producing it and Al Schmitt as the engineer. "These are the guys that made the Barbra Streisand and Frank Sinatra records and I had the opportunity to record with them. For me that was my Kylie Minogue hall pass moment where I was like, 'I'm never going to be able to do that with Texas, so I'm just going to do it for fun'." The way music is bought and consumed has changed massively since you started out. Are you a fan of the digital era or do you like traditional records? "For me, life needs to move on. My brain still works on a vinyl A-side and B-side, because that's what I was used to when I grew up. I guess I still hear a record in two parts, but I still buy my music online and from shops. I always think a mix is healthy. "However, I only buy albums - I don't buy tracks. I'm not doing buffet bar s**t, because I don't feel it gives you the artist. If I'm going to talk about someone I like, I don't want to talk about tracks. I can't even sit with someone who fast-forwards songs and they think they're listening to an album. Let the record breathe, for God's sake. You've got to savour things to get to know them." What excites you about the way the music industry is changing at the moment? "There's a really interesting moment happening right now in music where you have a lot of new young bands developing themselves. I think it's hysterically funny that suddenly majors come in at a point when they have a massive social network, done a load of videos, they've basically released three singles and there's a big interest in them. They spot the money there and just pump more into them. I'm just like, 'You f**kers', but it amuses me because they're the acts that in the future will be like, 'Yeah, OK. You put your money in, but we're doing it our way'." Lots of new talent emerges from shows like The X Factor and Must Be The Music, which you judged. Would you ever consider filling that role again? "I don't know - you can never say never. I did it and really enjoyed it - I never thought I'd get so into it! I'd been offered stuff before but always said no, but when they explained that songwriters would audition and keep their publishing fees, my ears pricked up and I thought, 'This is something different.' "The first day of filming I just thought, 'I've made the biggest mistake of my career'. We've always been so protective of Texas - we don't always get it right - but there's nothing where someone can go, 'Oh that's a real big f**k-up there'. The format slightly changed on the second day of filming and it all fell into place, so that was really cool." Texas's new album The Conversation is out on May 20. http://www.digitalspy.ie/music/interviews/a481041/texas-interview-label-was-too-busy-with-rihanna-for-us.html |
