Two people have been killed and 23 injured after two explosions at the finish line of the Boston Marathon, police say. The blasts shattered the carnival atmosphere of one of the biggest sporting events in the US, causing panic and confusion. Bloodied victims were initially rushed to a medical tent set up to care for fatigued runners. Emergency services descended on the scene, which was quickly locked down. The cause of the explosions has yet to be confirmed. A spokeswoman for Massachusetts General Hospital in the city told Reuters news agency that it was treating 19 victims of the explosion in its emergency room, but information about their condition was not immediately available. A White House official said President Barack Obama had been notified about events in Boston, while Vice President Joe Biden - breaking of from a telephone conference call on gun control - said: "Our prayers are with those people in Boston who have suffered injury." President Obama had called Boston Mayor Tom Menino and Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick on Monday to offer federal assistance, an official said. The Federal Aviation Administration has created a no-fly zone over the area, while security at key sites in Washington DC and New York has been tightened. The incident reportedly came about two hours after the winners crossed the line. The Associated Press news agency said there was a loud explosion on the north side of Boylston Street, just before the bridge that marks the finish line. Another loud explosion could be heard a few seconds later, and smoke could be seen rising from the scene of the blasts. TV helicopter footage showed blood staining the pavement in the shopping and tourist area known as Back Bay. Mike Mitchell of Vancouver, Canada, a runner who had finished the race, said he was looking back at the finish line when he saw a "massive explosion." Smoke rose 50ft (15m) in the air, he told Reuters news agency, and people began running away and screaming after hearing the noise. "Everybody freaked out," he said. Stragglers heading for the finish line were rerouted away from the smoking site of the blasts. The annual Boston Marathon attracting a large field of runners and tens of thousands of spectators. British police are reviewing security plans for Sunday's London Marathon, the next major international marathon, following events in Boston. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-22160691 |

Apparently one of the dead was an 8 year old boy. Beyond awful. Rumour has it that 12 people may have been killed. |

I really don't know. How can anyone think that doing this will advance their "cause", whatever it may be? It's beyond sick. |

No group has taken responsibility. Terrorist groups take credit for things they didn't even do, and not a peep. This was probably some random dumbass. I guess we'll see soon. People from all over the world were there. It's a huge event. |

When did Al Qaeda take responsibility for 9-11 though? Wasn't it years later? |

I know every attack/bombing is beyond awful, but I'm a big athletics fan and this feels especially harrowing. I know that's a silly thing to say, but I got a real jolt last night when I heard about it. |

That's frightening. I'm thinking also about 2014 Winter Olimpics in Sochi. It's very "packed" area. Hope the security will be adequate |

I think there was a tape of bin Laden saying it back in 2004. Most groups take responsibility immediately. They want the world to know why they did it. Terrorist groups have now said that they had no part in this. This is a lone wolf. It's almost a throwback to the Atlanta Summer Olympics bombing, which was done because of abortion. This was done on tax day or "Patriot's Day", with a race in part dedicated to the Newtown victims, with the Newton families in the VIP stands, a day when gun control was going to be debated, something that came about because of Newton, and it happened in Boston (Boston TEA PARTY). No one knows anything for sure yet. It could be just some idiot who was looking for attention. Probably not though. I love the people that thought it came from North Korea. Also, the Saudi or Saudis that were questioned in Boston were cleared. |

I bet they're just two shithead nutcases. It doesn't look to me like it was some sort of ingeniously orchestrated terror attack. Just two imbeciles lashing out at the world. May they rot in hell, although I do hope they catch the second one alive, so the rest of his life can be made a misery. |

Well, they pulled off some awesome shit. I mean, not leaving the state after the bombings, then holding up a 7-11 afterward, highjacking a car, then throwing bombs out of the car window, strapping an IED to yourself, getting into a shootout with the police, killing a cop at MIT, I could go on. They still haven't caught the one guy. The other got run over by his brother. There was a third person as well. Oh, and the one guy was one his social media page 5 in the morning this morning. |

The dead one wrote on his Facebook a while ago "I don't have a single American friend. I don't understand them. God says no alcohol. They have no self control. There are no values anymore." No "values"? So I guess going out and planting bombs that kill kids at a marathon is displaying "values" and "self control"? What a sad, fucked-up, bitter, pathetic, EVIL cunt. |

Just as with all crimes, I am just thinking 'why'? Why did innocent people who got out on a Sunday morning to run deserve to get bombed? I guess what you say provides some insight but still... |
