I was warming to Kanye since 808 (though was always tired after several listens), but it looks like now I'm a fan.
This album is SO addictive, and believe me, I hate rap. Actually this album is the second rap one I'm so addictive since Missy Elliott's best one (third if counting The Miseducation).
I don't know what happened there with him, but this misic is clicking with me totally (been listening for two days). It's wrong word to call it 'catchy' but it is. And finally, not by using guest vocal choruses. Fell in LOVE with this album on my 3rd listen, it takes time. Not a single bad song. I love how short it is. Perfect. I do prefer pop, but still this one is out of my guilty pleasure zone. Now its officially my pleasure.

Its so not forced with all this techno production and unusual song structures. it flows with it. rap flows, wow!

It's released, No1 everywhere (in major markets) at least!

(+ it slays in my Russia too, No1 here :) ) Even Japan has it at No2.

I'm listening for the first time just now and not disappointed so far - he's one of the few artists who can still actually surprise me.
Black Skinhead, New Slaves, I'm In It and Blood on the Leaves are all standouts for me so far. It's going to take me a while to process it all though - so many amazing twists and turns and so many musical genres bent together. It will take a while for the lyrics to percolate through but I love how unrelentingly tough it is. Great stuff.

on second listen now - I am a God is incredible. It get's quite scary towards the end. If he's a God he's not having a lot of fun doing it is he? :chuckle:

Also HURRY UP WITH MY DAMN CROISSANTS = new favourite song lyric, it's right up there with AND THE SKY FILLED WITH HERONS

It should take a while, of course :)
The best of it I got listening to it in a car. My acoustics at home certainly bad for this sound. Too natural sounded. I think its best with phones.

Its not like his lyrics are the best out of songs all the time, but still loving his voice, finally. He always distracted me with too much voice coder, now it's to minimum, and even on Blood On The Leaves I'm ok with it.

yeah, it's definitely a headphones album. I really like his lyrics - you have to kind of tune in through the rap-speak but once you do that there's gems in there, and just interesting emotions?

How can anyone enjoy something so unrelentingly joyless, aggressive, bitter, noisy and tuneless?

As Pera said, it's just endless "Fuck, nigger, bitch, shit, dick, ho" over basic beats, with the occasional sample thrown in. His 808s album was brilliant, but this stuff if just shit.

In honestly, you're missing smth really great...
Maybe it will get you 4-5 listens to 'get' it. Then you'll be pleased. I am not insisting though ;) use headphones though.

This is not noisy. All sounds are clear to perfection. (IMO BTWay was noisy) Joyless? No. Tuneless? It has tunes inside of it, you just need to find them.
Agressive yes.

No, I am not "missing" anything, thanks. I'm not the one falling for his tired shtick.

Pitchfork have awarded it 9.5 out of 10. I think that says it all really.

River fair enough it's not for you but there is more to his music for me and a lot of the things you describe as negatives are not negatives for me. I understand that the language and the aggressiveness, bitterness and yes relentlessness are a barrier to enjoying his work for some people but I enjoy it. I also find his music to be incredibly inventive and (excuse the pat phrase) boundary pushing. He's quite experimental really, especially for a mainstream artist.

I don't read Pitchfork so couldn't give a hoot what they think either way, but personally I love it :)

Listening to shit on headphones is still shit. People who say things like "Oh you have to listen to it on headphones"...are they for real? Such nonsense.

I am obsessed with it. I have listened to it over 20 times since it leaked. The first four tracks are beyond anything I could ever have imagined. Yes it's relentless, profane and arrogant but I adore it for those specific reasons. This man is a genius.
