Clockwork wasn't a common word in Avalon city and schedules were only made for show. Gabe felt very strongly about this ever since he had moved into the student dorms.

His days were two extremes of the spectrum. Either they were deathly boring, or they were toothgrindingly chaotic. These happen in no particular order. It had gotten even worse since his enlistment at headquarters. He was expected to respond to calls that even happen past midnight, which meant that several times he had to sneak out of the dorms. This hellish dump they call a city wasn't the type to sleep.

I need sleep. I need it bad. The prof will have my ass if I oversleep again.

More than the danger he had learned to put up with, he found schoolteachers scarier. Gabe swore they could chew anyone's heads off if they miss a term paper. Last week, he was roasted within an inch of his sorry life.

Wagner's Die Walküre began to play. The rising sounds of music lessened the tightness he had been feeling in his chest. The knot between his brows loosened. That was better. They had been given too many assignments lately. Not very good, Gabe had been nursing a steady headache for days on top of that. His nerves had been strung too high because of that. It was all he could do to give people a silent smile.

Today was far from quiet. An hour ago, they were dispatched all over the city to shoo civilians off the streets. It sounded like something big was happening. Gabe could hear a banshee's scream echo through the skies. He shuddered and briefly tore his worries from it to point some people to cover. Whatever was making that godforsaken sound, I hope I don't meet it.

What was he to do when he does? Sing it to sleep?

No. He couldn't afford to be cocky. At this time, he could only hope that the others from the Cabinet who had been sent to that whatchamacallit will be able to come back in one piece. For now, he can only try to keep any troublemakers who are taking an opportunity from the distraction. The streets were empty now. If anyone were out, it could either be a friend or an enemy.

"Dun-du-du-rah-run, dun-du-du-rah-run, dun-du-du-RAH-run. Dun-du-ruh-raaaaah." He sang softly to the music filling his ears. The Ride of the Valkyries. How fitting.
