Okay, I have now run the Bronco twice, and both times I've had to tear the steering apart, afterwards. The steering in this chassis (Tamiya CC-01) is notoriously sloppy. When I ordered the truck, I also ordered a steering kit from GPM Racing, that was supposed to fix that problem. Now, the aluminum GPM parts do pull out the slop, where it exists in the stock parts, and even adds bearings in a place, that was just plastic grinding on plastic, before. However, one of the parts it replaces, is two parts in the GPM kit. Those parts fit together poorly.

The GPM kit replaces replaces some bell cranks, that are tied together with a bent piece of wire. The replacements have a matching tie-rod, with properly engineered pivot points. All of this is great. The problem is that one of the bell cranks is a vertical axle, with a control arm on either end. The axle has flats machined on each end, the control arms have matching recesses. The bottom control arm fits nearly perfectly onto the axle, with little to no play. The top arm, however.... That thing fits sloppy, and no amount of torquing down the bolt that holds it in place is ever going to help. I've tried. I even tried adhesive. No joy.

I made a shim out of some pop can material, and the fit felt perfect, when I put everything together. I'll find out how well it holds, next time I drive it.

The back yard is still pretty soggy, and they're threatening us with rain, so Fen, the truck-cat made get some play time. He is the dedicated swamper.

It's stationary. How could it go swamping?

The Bronco has devoured its own pinion. Glass filled nylon gears are not kind to aluminum gears. Non adjustable gear mesh, and a chassis that pushes the gears together when flexes don't help.

So, I ordered a steel pinion for it. A nice 48 pitch 18 tooth unit, from Robinson Racing. They make the best RC gears.

And, ordered the wrong tooth count....

So, I ordered a 16 tooth pinion, like what the truck came with; another Robinson unit.

That mesh is weird. It has more gap than the stock unit, but it runs really rough. *web search*

Oh. Metric pitch gears. I didn't know anybody still messed with those. 16 tooth .6 module pitch pinion has been ordered. Sure glad Robinson makes metric gears.

I hope this one fits....

You don't even want to know how long it took to get the old grease, that was contaminated with aluminum, that used to be the pinion out of the spur gear teeth.

Something about the aluminum makes the grease a lot stickier than it normally is.

Nice! Very cool. How does it handle in the snow and all? Or...not enough yet? =x

Haven't had a chance to test it. Speed controller kept cutting out the motor. Should be able to test it, pretty soon.

Thanks. It's got some issues that need to be ironed out. But, it more or less works.

Yes, the stuff he makes is pretty cool :3

I want to see/hear about it in action though!

If we can keep snow for more than a few days...

Thanks guys. Been working better, with a little more practice. I can't run it long, before my fingers get too cold. Transmitter muffs always seem to be sold out, at the places I know that carry them.

Main thing I need to do, is redrill the servo mounting holes, and get rid of the little rubber grommets. They're letting things move too much. Especially on the blade lifting servo.
