The Changelings; Random world idea

I'd tell you where this one came from, if I knew.

These "changelings" (not that the term really fits.) Appear over night fully formed at a point in early adolescence. (I'm waffling between 12 or 14 years old. 13 would be a cop out. :P ) These people are genetically members of the families they appear with. But, they carry fractured memories of who they were before. Rarely do they remember enough to identify their original selves. When a changeling can remember their original identity, that person is still alive and well, with no knowledge or sensation that anything has happened to them. Which personality is the copy, is impossible to truly know.

Sometime within the first two months, usually in the first two weeks, the changelings will begin to lose what little of their former selves they can remember. This often happens rapidly, over the course of a few hours. Their emotional maturity level rapidly drops from the adult they used to be, to the youth they are now. The event is traumatic, and occasionally causes the changeling to temporarily regress to a level far below their physical age.

A changeling's new body is independent of their original. Ethnicity often changes, as does gender, though less often. The changeling always forms speaking the language or languages of their new family, regardless of what they spoke before. Usually, they can't remember enough of their previous language to speak it, even before the regression period. They also tend to pick up the dialect of their new family.

most foster care systems have had to create all new sections specifically to deal with the unwanted changelings, as many families are unwilling to deal with this stranger that's suddenly appeared in their home. These abandoned changelings have lead to what are being called second generation changelings. Those who never mesh with their new families, disappear four to five years after their initial appearance. They show up in new bodies, with new families, forced to start the process all over again. A curious offshoot of this effect is rejected changelings that are integrated into families other than the one they appeared with. On their fourth or fifth anniversary of appearing, they wake up transformed, now biologically part of the family that took them in, as if they first appeared with them.

These 'Original Identities', do these changelings simply appear out of nowhere, or were they actually the previous person a la Changeling: The Lost?
"Would you like something to drink?" She opened the fridge. "We have water, milk, juice, spiders, Dr. Pepper-"
"Spiders?"
"Spiders it is then."
"No, that wasn't-"
But she was already pouring him a brimming glass of spiders.

Dunno. I haven't even worked out what's causing all of this, let alone which person is the real one. All I know is that whatever's causing it, seems to want to the changelings to be happy.

I only know Werewolf: The Apocalypse, and that's been a long time. I have no idea what Changeling: The Lost's set up is.

Rather than gush about it here, I'll PM you the CtL setup.

Still, sounds prety neat.

"Spiders?"

Thanks. I'm finding myself wondering how the world at large reacts to the phenomenon. I'm sure there's plenty of anti-changeling hate groups, and changelings rights organizations out there.

Hhmmm, so I'm having this idea of celestial beings who don't understand the concept of suffering, or really anything other than always being happy and satisfied, decide to displace humans who aren't happy with their lives. They leave parts of themselves behind, to make sure that the people they've displaced are happy in their new lives. If the people aren't happy, the beings try again, to give them a happy life.

Probably the part of each being that takes over a human life, is left unaware of what it really is.

This setup sounds totally familier, I swear I've heard something similar before (to the first part, with the changlings appearing and being younger). I just can't place where...

I like how you're expanding the idea though.
