~Froggs~![]() Among some of the strangest races in the Galaxy, there exists Froggs. The amphibian race is certainly one of the most exotic races in the Galaxy and one of the most unique, given their general lack of intelligence and powerful body structure. - - - - - - Anatomy: ![]() Frogg’s have basic internal organs similar to Human’s, albeit with bigger and much slimier organs, aside from four chambered hearts. Their body structure is much bulkier with thicker bones than most races in the Galaxy, especially around the legs. A Frogg’s skin is a lycra skin type, allowing it to withstand injury and disease whilst giving them their green appearance. Unlike Earth frogs, however, a Frogg cannot absorb water through their skin; they must drink it. A normal Frogg’s skin cannot change colour, though that does not mean variations don’t exist. Depending on where a Frogg lives, their skin may have adapted to that environment and become a different colour- such as orange if their family has lived in a desert for generations and evolved to that setting. Frogg’s are generally taller than other races. The common female Frogg is 6’4” tall, whilst the common male reaches to 6’6”. The tallest Frogg in history was 8’1”. In terms of weight, Frogg’s are very heavy by default due to being thick-boned. Fat Frogg’s can exist if a Frogg eats too much, to which a Frogg normally moderates their eating habits to avoid this happening naturally. For a Frogg to step on your foot by accident would cause extreme amounts of pain. Frogg’s are somewhat similar to Florans in many aspects, aside from being fauna not flora. They share a common attribute: strength. A Frogg’s bodily structure allows a single Frogg to lift 3x that of a normal Human, making them very capable labour workers. Most of the strength goes to a Frogg’s legs and knees, as they are still capable of lowering themselves down and leaping a great distance. A common natural fighting tactic is to leap on top of a foe, pushing down the heavy body weight upon an enemy with gravity. Another similarity is that Frogg’s aren’t very intelligent. A Frogg is perfectly capable of gaining much knowledge over the years and picking up learnt skills, but they aren’t very good at imagining new concepts or combining ideas. The extent of a Frogg’s capable knowledge is learning a skill and performing that skill. For example, a Frogg can, if learnt well, drive a van- but a Frogg won’t be able to overdo it and become a racer or a savvy taxi driver that knows all the routes of a town. Not because a Frogg isn’t able to understand the routes, but because a Frogg doesn’t have the intelligence to understand how he/she can apply the routes to their job. Also much like Florans, Frogg’s cannot consume alcohol- for it, like Florans, would undoubtedly kill them. And, just like Florans, Frogg’s have a heightened sense of hearing- but unlike Florans, have a dulled sense of smell, as they evolved in swamps. Frogg’s, of all genders and types, have a large vocal sac where a neck is located. This neck is the weakest part of a Frogg’s body and the part that would almost definitely kill them if injured. The vocal sac allows them to ‘speak’ in specific ways, like when calling for help or anything that requires a Frogg to ‘shout.’ Almost naturally, Frogg’s can fill their sac with air in order to make a louder noise. Frogg’s use this form of communication in their normal language, to advertise their presence in order to sell goods, to shout for help or even simply to laugh. Frogg’s are incapable of speaking normally. Their vocals simply do not not allow for words to form within other tongues. To speak normally, a Frogg would require a “universal Frogg translator,” a commonly sought after product by Frogg’s in order to communicate with the rest of the Galaxy more easily. Frogg’s have webbed hands and feet. This, in theory, is a result of their evolution as giant frogs. However, the webbed feet and hands give them no natural advantage when swimming, due to their large body mass and very small webbings. It was merely a remnant of their past specie. With their fingers, Frogg’s are perfectly capable of holding, carrying and having fine motor skills. Another remnant of their ancestors is their long tongues, to which Frogg’s certainly do have. Their tongues, despite being long, are very fragile: thus they cannot use them as grapple hooks or to pull people towards them. Instead, it merely can wrap around flies in the air. Pros: -A very strong race, able to hold 3x that of Human’s. -Are capable of leaping large distances when bent down. -Have a heightened sense of hearing. -Are naturally resistant to injury and illness due to lycra skin. -Have long tongues to eat flies with. -Even Florans are slightly afraid of Frogg’s due to their powerful bodies. Cons: -Racially, Frogg’s are not very intelligent or creative. They learn, but cannot easily apply the knowledge. -Cannot speak other languages without implants or a translator. -Have a dulled sense of smell. -Cannot drink alcohol, for it is poison. -Their vocal sacs are extremely vulnerable, the weakest part of their body. -Frogg’s are generally slow to grasp dangers. - - - - - - Diet: The diet of Frogg’s is something to marvel. They are almost identical to normal Earth frogs. Frogg’s are carnivores and will refuse to eat fruit of any kind. Instead, they strictly eat large bugs, fish, small rodents or even typical meat dinners. They are very fond of eating mushy foods produced by other races, such as curry, meat stews, meat soups, seafood gratin or anything that lacks vegetables or a solid structure. In Frogg communities, bugs are bought as a common item in shops. Jars of alive bugs are taken back to Frogg homes for them to eat. While most bugs in the Galaxy are edible to Frogg’s, there are some bugs Frogg’s cannot eat, such as mudstags, frostflies, hivehogs, vineclimber, gasgiants- in basic, any bug that has a unique property that makes them different from regular meaty-tasting bugs. It is also important to note that Frogg’s will refuse to eat dead bugs, but have no problem eating dead fish, rodents or any other animals as long as they are healthy to eat. Culture of Froggs: The culture of Frogg’s is very defined by their racial tendencies to live in wooden huts, enjoy life and have a very easy sense of humour. No Frogg has a name from birth. In fact, Frogg’s generally are given nicknames or names from other races that become friends with the Frogg because the Frogg in question is incapable of saying their names naturally. For example, upon first contact with Frogg’s, the Protectorate was confronted with naming the Frogg’s planet and system because the Frogg’s themselves could not name it. Frogg’s are therefore very social and share much with their race, from giving food freely to another Frogg to simply sharing knowledge. Since the Frogg homeworld was destroyed by a supernova over two-hundred years ago, Frogg’s generally live in the Protectorate due to their aid in evacuating the planet. This makes most, but not all, Frogg’s very patriotic to the Protectorate. Frogg’s mostly live where they work, either in apartments in cities or on ships/space stations. They live a surprisingly happy civil life, as most Frogg’s get enjoyment from working as manual labourers. Some Frogg’s try to retain their homeworlds ‘style,’ and so some Frogg’s live in self-built wooden huts on stilts in swamps, spending their days fishing or cutting wood as a job. Frogg Merchants are a somewhat rare, but exciting sight. A tradition born via the first Frogg senator, Bheka (the given name to him from the Protectorate), nearly all Frogg Merchants wear a red fez. These merchants are usually very good at their jobs, being extremely accurate in finance and currency due to it being a learnt skill. A Frogg cashier is the best race to have on a kiosk. Frogg’s themselves that are independent tradesmen are most successful within Frogg communities, selling much needed bugs or Frogg clothing. https://starbounder.org/mediawiki/images/5/5d/Fr%C3%B6gg_Furnishing.gif The only extremely successful widespread Frogg business is Frögg furnishings, a business solely ran by Frogg’s with furniture built by Frogg’s. It’s owner, Frögg, is a very proud Frogg. The Frogg Language: The language of the Frogg’s, at first glance from most races, sounds absurd to call a language, as their ‘words’ sound exactly the same in the form of “ribbits,” “croaks” and different vibrations. To Frogg’s and Floran’s, however, the language makes more sense, as their heightened sense of hearing allows them to pick up the different vibrations, the pitch and tone of a “ribbit” or a “croak.” Because of this, the Frogg language works to some extent. It is, however, undeniably simplistic compared to other languages. Their language has no pronouns and very few adjectives. It is mainly comprised of nouns for places and objects, with verbs to tell or detail events or actions. It is important to note that only Frogg’s can speak their own language, as they are the only race to have the bodily vocals to make said sounds. While Florans may understand the language, they cannot speak it themselves. For example, Frogg’s do not have a word for “rain.” Instead, they use the word “water” to describe the rain, to which the word “water” can also be used to describe a swamp, a glass of water or even a flood. But for a Frogg to describe a flood, they would add the adjective “much.” Thus, the Frogg word for flood translates to “much water.” In reality, the words “much water” sound more like “rehbit ribbit” phonologically. Example conversation with two Frogg’s: Frogg A: “Ribbit.” (“Aloha.”) Frogg B: “Croak!” (“Purchase [bugs]!”) Frogg A: “Erghbit. Ribbit.” (“No. Looking.”) Frogg B: *Simply nods* Frogg A: “Ribbit?” (“How are you?”) Frogg B: “Cro-oak.” (“Healthy.”) - - - - - - History: Frogg’s never had a word for their homeworld and their history is something to marvel, as it was never, at any point, recorded. It is believed that Frogg’s were somewhat of a recent evolution on their planet from a much larger amphibian creature that was a variant of predatory frog. Large skeletons of said creatures were once found in the swamps that littered the Frogg’s homeworld. It is estimated that the Frogg’s came into existence properly around 2100 to 2300, certainly much recently then the other races. Because of this: Frogg’s never truly developed anything beyond primitive weaponry and housing. Their culture and language is very basic in comparison to the rest of the Galaxy’s races because Frogg’s, as a race, is the youngest natural-made specie in the Protectorate. Frogg’s were found by Protectorate explorers in 2628. In a very confusing state of affairs that would become a running meme-like joke across the Galaxy to the modern day, Frogg’s did not seem bothered by the new races walking through their swamps. There was no grand greeting or any large reaction to their landing, nor was there any official response from the Frogg’s for many years to come. In fact, when Curators arrived only months later on their planet to establish a common means of communication, they did so rather casually with a single Frogg sitting on his porch in a rocking chair. Frogg’s also did not seem to mind being recorded for study- though the studies would show the Frogg’s were talking about the presence of “weird creatures.” Eventually, a common form of communication was made- and to even more surprise of The Curators, the Frogg’s wanted The Curators to name their planet, since Frogg’s had no word for their own homeworld or the ground itself. Curators, appropriately, called the world “Croak.” They named the system the “Ranae System.” From studies, Curators claimed in a report to the Grand Protector in 2629 that landing on Croak and greeting a 300-year old race had completely changed the development of Frogg’s as a race. Their technology upon first contact was limited to spears, wooden shacks and torches. Yet after contact, by themselves, with new imagination sparked by sight of the new races and their ships, Frogg’s began to develop luxuries before they had even discovered the wheel. Frogg’s had created rocking chairs, clothes for themselves and even evolved to barter goods in a very civilized way. Alien contact to a completely new race had changed Frogg’s forever. In 2644, Frogg’s under the planet Croak joined the Protectorate. This was achieved through developments on the Frogg’s part, as they slowly developed new cloths, learnt to mine metals from the ground and created a stable government for the planet that was mostly ran by Frogg Merchants. One merchant in particular, wearing a red fez, became very prominent and decided it was best for all Frogg’s to join the Protectorate. It was a very simplistic decision and was taken into heavy debate with the Protectorate senate before it was agreed upon. A Frogg senator was a strange sight on Earth, but despite racial setbacks, the Frogg performed his job to the letter. The Protectorate even gifted him a name: Bheka, the Sanskrit word for frog. Bheka would even work with the Curators to develop a translation tool for all Frogg’s to use. The rest is self-explanatory. As all races do that join the Protectorate: Frogg’s spread across the stars. Very few of them, however, sought to be colonists. Instead, many Frogg’s simply spread across the stars because they were very capable, skilled and willing labour workers. All was well until 3124, only 480 years later. The Great Frogg Exodus, as it is known, occurred when the Ranae System’s star began to reach the stages of supernova. It was sudden and only a few days were given in warning to the planet of Croak for the inhabitants of the planet to evacuate. 95% of the Frogg population on Croak, which accounted for 71% of the entire Frogg population known in the Galaxy, agreed to evacuate the planet. The remaining 5% were mostly proud Frogg’s that refused to leave their home. Millions of Frogg’s scattered throughout the Galaxy, having lost their homeworld. Many were given relief efforts via the Protectorate, given charity and any medical aid. Frogg’s never forgot this gift: it is something that fathers teach their children on a regular basis within Frogg families. Everything the Frogg’s had for themselves was lost- but that isn’t to say Frogg’s never found new homes, as Frogg colonies were easily established, whilst most just began to living in cities and towns with other races. Today, there are only three planets that are solely Frogg planets with their own Frogg senators. Frogg’s are overall patriotic to the Protectorate, though that isn’t to say all Frogg’s are Protectorate born and raised. |
