~Penguins~

Among the strangest races in the Galaxy, penguins have made themselves known as the youngest race. Infamous for being shady as a stereotype, they make some of the Galaxies most successful engineers and guns-for-hire.

A normal male penguin is between 2’0” to 2’6” tall, weighing between 14kg-18kg.
Biologically, penguins are biologically-altered clones of the emperor penguin from Earth with many different differences that was to make them ideal soldiers for their creators originally.
Firstly, they are twice as small compared to emperor penguins, being half their size and weight, being very short in comparison to other races. Secondly, unlike emperor penguins, they are extremely intelligent; having more advanced minds than their ancestors, capable of complex thoughts and concepts such as engineering, astrophysics, combat tactics and even philosophy.
A penguins natural lifespan is 14 years of age, maturing as early as 10 months old. Through medicine and healthy lifestyles, a penguin can reach 20 years of age.

Penguins are capable of picking up objects. They achieve this by curling their flippers around an object to lift it, acting as hands. The bones of the flippers, having been altered, are quite sturdy, strong and flexible. They can act as shields to their weaker, smaller body in physical contact, but are poor shields against even the most basic of attacks, including being hit by a blunt object such as a wooden stick.
Due to this, penguins can lift and use tools, weapons and accessories.
Their other alteration from a normal penguin is their ability to communicate. This is achieved through the gift of vocal cords, as their creator- the Mad Scientist- which replaced the syrinx with a Human voice box. Because of these, the penguins are incapable of making unaltered penguin noises naturally without imitation, the same as a Human would imitate.

Just like those they evolved from, penguins can drink salt-water like normal water. Alcohol, however, poisons them. Bars for penguins across the Galaxy serve large selections of smoothies, essentially.

Culture and Lifestyles:

The emergence of penguin ‘culture’ was made known in the late 3200’s after Curator study in penguin ethnic groups around the Galaxy. What they found was hard to define with some similarities between all the groups.

All penguins across the Galaxy have their origins as part of the Mad Scientist’s Army in the 2940’s, thus a lot of their original culture was embedded in a raider-like military with technology inspired from the Golden Age of Humanity (1900-2100). In particular, penguin technology from their UFO’s to their tanks are heavily inspired by Earth fiction and early Earth armoured vehicles. A lot of modern penguins still take from these origins, especially fortified by the penguin capital of the Dark Moon- the penguins “homeworld.”
One of the newest cultural norms passed between different penguin communities are “dubloons,” a pure gold currency used in penguin communities, mostly in bars across the Galaxy.

This isn’t to say all penguins are separate from the rest of the Galaxy in terms of culture. In fact, overall, only 20% of the penguins in the Galaxy maintain their original ‘concept’ of being part of a sole race with their own government and military power.
In fact, 75% of other penguins in the Galaxy are simply integrated into other societies, mainly within Lawless Space. They mainly work as mercenaries, raiders, pirates, smugglers and, quite famously, engineers. The large amount of penguin labourers in the ship industry is a result to their training and inherent love for technology passed down from their grandfathers within the Mad Scientist’s Army.
A majority of penguins simply exist within other societies and cater to them, albeit the Protectorate, raider clans, independent planets or even space stations.

There are still small amounts unaccounted for in terms of culture. 5% of penguins in the Galaxy are split between nomadic, small fleets of UFO’s and a tiny majority of penguins that still see themselves as part of the Mad Scientist’s Army. Unfortunately, both these groups do not have a home and travel in small fleets of UFO’s, thus the nomadics suffer racism and hatred from many places in the Galaxy.
Even penguins outside nomadic groups are victims of racism to some degree, due to their mischievous stereotype and past in terrorism. This has recently been more encouraged as a practice due to the chaos given by the Occasus Cult after the Ruin destroyed Earth in 3380. While penguins have no links to the Occasus Cult at all, many of the Galaxy are simply hateful towards any type of terrorism, past or present, real or fictional.

History:

Penguins take their name from Earth’s own emperor penguins, the original race to which the modern penguins are based. In reality, the original penguins of Earth are a lesser evolved specie to the “modern penguin.” Modern Penguins take the name with pride as a biologically altered version of their somewhat lesser-minded ancestors, albeit with an extreme size difference, as emperor penguins are twice as big than the penguins of the modern day.

Created by the “Mad Scientist” in 2942 after many years of experimentation, Penguins were originally plotted to be a mass-cloned army of the Mad Scientist to enact his evil, twisted deeds across the Galaxy. Whilst Penguins themselves are quite mischievous, they aren’t inherently evil and do have a conscious, especially in regards to killing and stealing. This was in fact to fault of the Mad Scientist, to which he couldn’t biologically make a race ‘evil’ by default. Thus, he moved his focus onto other projects, leading to the T-Rex Plague of 2945 and his eventual capture.
The penguins came into the Protectorate’s gaze upon the Siege of the Dark Moon where they fought the attacking Protectorate in force.
After three days of battle, the Mad Scientist was captured and penguins were banished from Protectorate Space to stay in Lawless Space in a decree called the “Scientists Ordinances Act.” Due to the large amount of penguins that had been cloned of the Dark Moon, tens of thousands of the new race found themselves going into Lawless Space with no leaders nor direction as a race.

Over the years, Penguins had established themselves in Lawless Space for several reasons. Some had become infamous raiders, others extremely talented engineers whilst others became guns for hire. Penguin families repopulated across the stars, on colonies, official independent planets and on their own spaceship fleets that live nomadically across space.
Their numbers multiplied dramatically between 2950 and 3050 as their race became more known to the Galaxy- and their species integrated in normal life. By 3100, they were an accepted sentient race of the Galaxy as the Protectorate agreed to allow penguins to re-enter Protectorate Space, gifting a large nomadic population the Dark Moon to live on as their “homeworld.” Due to the large amount of items the Mad Scientist created- and the penguins ability to create/fix technology- the moon quickly became a large city for penguins, the first one that ever came into existence.
The Dark Moon is an official Protectorate “planet” with it’s own penguin senator.

Despite their relatively short history, penguins have been quite influential in Lawless Space as the go-to engineers, smugglers and guns-for-hire.
