[disclaimer] I created this as a guide and not mandatory, please feel free to post how you like (within the rules of the board). You may be asked to read this thread to improve your role playing skill, though it is unlikely Alright Gents and Ladies, lets get class underway! This thread is designed to help those that do not have the first clue about Role playing to learn how, it also serves as a way for people to brush up on their skills. INDEX I - WHAT IS RPING? II - WHAT ARE THE RULES? III - HOW DO I EVEN START? IV - HOW DO I IMPROVE? I. WHAT IS RPING? What is Rping? well its simple to define, but not simple to start doing. RPing is short for " Role Playing ", which means: The modifying of a person's behavior to accord with a desired personal image, as to impress others or conform to a particular environment. I like to define it as something more simple though, i like to call it adding your personal created character to a story to develop the story and give it more richness. II. WHAT ARE THE RULES? some of the rules are simple some are hard. Lets start with the more simple ones. - In role playing you must wait your turn. - You must try to write in complete and grammatically correct sentences. - You must check your spelling and make sure your using the right words. Some of the harder ones would be. - You must try to act as your character would act in any situation - You must not try to control situations by power gaming (which means doing things that seem impossible in the boundaries of the story you are Role playing in.) - You must not Rp for others in your post - You must not write any other way then how you would write a book. III. HOW DO I EVEN START? Well to start you must first clear your mind, and try to think like how your character would. Think about the setting - setting is the time or place, or the situation. You should think about what your character is thinking. And you must try your darnedest at adding detail. Detail is key to good role playing. Some other things to think about is the desired result of the post over all, try to make all your facts and details tie together, and also blend well, without repeating words too much or leaving things out. IV. HOW DO I IMPROVE? - COMMON MISSTAKES One of the common things i see is people using line breaks often in their Rping, they will write about their character speaking, and then put a break in their post as to indicate that they have made a paragraph, without really explaining who or what spoke. for example: Bad Example: Zero and Null walked down the path. "What should we do to pass the time?" They continued to walk and kept silent. Good Example: Plus and Mega skipped down the path, not really speaking much. Suddenly their silence was broken when Mega spoke up. " I think we should go downtown, what do you think? Plus nodded and they picked up their pace. Being specific helps a lot, as you can see in those examples. - BAD EXAMPLES Some other bad examples would be: *Hero walked along the path* (aside) "What am i doing with my life?" ===This is whats called Play script writing and doesn't look very good over all. please don't use brackets and asterisks to explain different actions. What else is wrong with this?=== Hero walked along the path, Hero thought to himself, "what should i do with my life?" This post is not too bad, but it is repeating the name and also not using the right punctuation, it then becomes a run on sentence. -STYLE One of the most important parts of improvement is developing your own personal writing style. Style can be defined in writing as the way that make your writing unique. From where you deliver a climax, to how you explain detail. Try it out i implore you. - DETAIL Keep improving detail and you will be well on your way. If you need, write as much as you can, stop for a while, and then add to your post later. I hope some of this helps you all. When asked, have you read this post reply with the secret word "Sploshem!" |
