For the non-Americans out there, Pledge of Allegiance is a speech students have to say before they begin class every day. Sometimes schools only make the students say the pledge every week, but there are lots of schools out there who make their students say the Pledge of Allegiance.
Read more about it here.

In some schools it is mandatory, while in some it is not. Most of the time though, it is highly encouraged even if it is not mandatory. And teachers will get mad if you do not stand for the pledge. The Pledge is supposed to help students learn to have respect for their country at an early age and be a patriot.

But let's be real here, do the kids even know what they're saying when they're five? I feel like the Pledge should be a voluntary thing to do at a later age in life, so that way you at least know what you are saying and can come up with your own ideas as to whether or not it should be mandatory to say it.

No, because it's plain stupid. Making it mandatory forces kids to either lie, or "believe" in something they don't really believe in. It goes a little bit against the idea of liberty Americans love to spread so much, don't you think?

The fact this is a contentious talking point shows how low and blindly authoritarian US political discourse is.

Yes, I also have a problem with the word God, and the Pledge would be better if they removed it.

Pledge allegiance to the constitution? The problem is that some people take the Constitution word by word, while others are more flexible.

Only the stupid and ill educated take the C as uninterpreted. The C is a living document the idiots of the right cheered when 2nd amendment was interpreted i their favor. But want strict interpretation to prevent rights for minorities they find less valuable than white western europeans.
