Proponents say torture is a necessary evil, like war. Sometimes it has to be done, because it is effective. Opponents say torture is a terrible way of dying and should be avoided as much as possible. |

It discourages opponents from surrendering and hence just causes more unnecessary death and bloodshed. |

Wouldn’t it cause people to want to surrender? |

Yeah, effective in co-ercing people into say what you want them to say... If the fact don't matter - sure, mission accomplished. Guantanamo was a raging success if this is the kind of thing you're into.

No. Not even waterboarding isn't anything good. |

I wouldn't rule it out but some time ago I read an interesting book on the master interrogator of the Luftwaffe, who had a different approach. |

If prisoners of war get tortured, it would motivate soldiers to keep fighting, since it increases what they have to lose when they become POWs. |

I agree. When I was around 11, I found waterboarding on Wikipedia and thought it was fake. I did it to myself and... well, I almost died. |

I think torture is okay as long as it's not "messy" meaning body fluids coming out, but torture should never be life-jeopardizing. Also, if the torture victim repeatedly says he's telling the truth when you've repeated doing painful things to him- HE'S TELLING THE DAMN TRUTH. Though torture in any case should be avoided. |

Unfortunately that's not how it works! You have to keep torturing him until he tells the truth. Keep going, you'll get the truth eventually... Obviously the truth in the above scenario is simply the truth the torturer wants to hear. |

That's exactly my point, that the torturer doesn't want to hear the real truth if he can't get what he wants to hear. |

Sorry, the first paragraph of my post should be read in a more playful/sarcastic tone. |

Of course not. It doesn't work if you're after the truth: it's only effective if you're after whatever you want to hear. |
