Some hundred years ago, the US was considered extremist as it was a democratic republic while most of the other countries at the time were absolute monarchies, oligarchies, and dictatorships. We tend to dislike extremism in the modern era, but it can be said that without political extremist thinkers, we wouldn’t have gotten a democracy along with some other countries. So is political extremism always bad, or do we just need some time to adjust to the new changes in society?

So called extremism can be essential. We must be prepared to change if present government just can't cut it.

We don't tend to call extremism we like "extremism", so really depends on what you mean. If it just means "ideas radically different from the mainstream", then no. I could even think of scenarios where I would say politically motivated violence is justified, for example if it was directed against a state like Oceania from 1984.
