About You Name: Sojourner or Onora, I use both. Contact Info: You can e-mail me at: ElisabethSW@msn.com Characters on WotR: I have none thus far. How Did You Find Us?: RPGCommunity General Information: Name: Halbarad Alias: none really Gender: Male Homeland: He is a Dunédain of Arnor, born near the town of Bree. Age: 81 years In the Service of: Aragorn: Chieftain of the Dunédain of Arnor and Heir of Isildur. Weaponry Weapons: Halbarad carries the same, rather non-descript sword at all times, however, it has proven itself in battle many times and he has some attachment to the weapon. Still, he hasn’t named the weapon, being a rather strait-forward man. After winning a small victory and getting him to name his horse, his kin don’t pester him all that much about the sword. A knife is also commonly tucked away in his belt, as he often has need of it. As for ranged weapons, he carries a bow and uses it at need, primarily when hunting, but in a fight he prefers close combat. Armor: Generally, he can be found in simple tunics and leggings of various shades of green and brown, with tall, well worn boots on his feet. The closest he typically gets to armor is the leather jerkin he wears all the time. It is also uncommon to see him without the thick green cloak he wears, draped over his shoulders. It sheds water fairly well in the summer, and keeps the cold at bay on frosty winter nights, and thus it is invaluable to him. Only when he knows he’s going to be facing stiff odds, and when one is on hand, will he wear a hauberk, but when he does, he is able to move quite naturally in it. Steed: Aras is a rangy sorrel gelding and he is invaluable to his master even though he isn’t much to look at. A creature of neither speed nor strength, he is however exceedingly sure-footed and capable of covering great distances without tiring. Furthermore, he is a quiet creature and will keep his head even when orcs or wolves are prowling nearby. Description Physical Description: He’s a few inches taller than the average man, though that makes him about average size for the Dunedain and he’s of a fairly light build. His mass is almost entirely made up of muscle and bone, in part due to his training with weapons, but mostly due to the fact that Rangers don’t often have the chance to overeat. He bears himself with some pride, but there is always weariness in him as well. His hair tends to be in a tangled mess and is a dark brown color. His eyes are small, but fairly intense and of the characteristic gray of the Dunedain. Otherwise his face is fairly plain, if marred by a few scars. Everything about him, from his calloused hands to his weather-beaten hide, speaks of a solitary life filled with toil. Avatar: Jeremy Irons Personality: Halbarad is a warrior who wanders the wilds, and thus it should be no surprise that he can be harsh and cold at times. When hunting orcs or other vile creatures, he is generally very calculating, however he can get caught up in the fighting and battle-joy will consume him. This often makes him appear blood-thirsty and warmongering, and perhaps he is to some small extent. However, he has never acquired any comfort in killing men. He will do so if there is need, but he takes no joy in it, seeing it as a waste and of benefit to Sauron and Morgoth if the race of Men cannot stand together. When one of his kin dies, as has happened far too often of late, he becomes silent, mourning in his own way. When around gentler folk, there seems to be some kind of switch that he flips, that changes his demeanor instantly. Suddenly the warrior will melt away, leaving a simple, tired man who wants nothing more than to spend time with his family and eat as much as he can. Thus, whenever he is around those who do not have first-hand knowledge of war, he refuses to speak of it beyond the simple ‘we drove them back’ or such. In his mind, he fights so that others may stay home and live in peace, and to tell them of the horrors of war would undermine all that he and the others have fought for. The other rangers are constantly surprised to see how gently he plays with his daughter. Still, Halbarad can often be a fairly jovial man, and he often graces campfires with his wildly exaggerated stories. When with other rangers, he will take up his position as second without much effort, but still remain one of them, brandying words and trading verbal blows often as not. He often counsels bold, if not rash, action, as he is a man who thinks directly, but it is tempered by those around him. If he had one trait to make up for all his vices, it would be loyalty. He has long respected and even admired Aragorn and has made it his job to watch the Dunadan’s back whenever possible, which, sadly, is rare enough. It has even become somewhat of a joke in those northern circles, that if Aragorn asked him, he would storm Mordor itself. History: When he was young, all he knew was that they didn’t have much and that his father often left for long periods of time and returned with various scratches and scrapes. His mother had explained to him that his father was protecting the North and doing an honorable duty. Predictably the question soon came up as to whether or not he would be able to fight like ‘Ada’. He didn’t understand why it pained her so much to say yes. As he grew older, he worked hard to help his mother around their sad little home, hoping that he would soon grow strong enough to head out with the men. Slowly he began to understand that seeing his father leave took a terrible toll on his mother, and that if he was gone for too long, she became edgy and was much more likely to discipline him for his youthful pranks. Then it dawned on him that some of the men seemed to disappear and then both his mother and father would be sad. By the time he was ten, he understood the situation fully and felt his heart in his throat every time he watched his father leave. Still, it did not keep him from wanting to head out as well, to take up a sword and fight by his father’s side for all that was right and good in the world. He got his chance not many years later. Fortunately, his first excursion was rather uneventful, save for when he left his mother, who cried bitterly at the parting. Nonetheless, he quickly learned that being a Ranger was not nearly as fun as he’d thought. It was cold and wet, with far too little food and far too much riding. Then there were the looks that the townspeople gave them. He’d asked his father immediately why they were looked down upon when they were the protectors of the north. The explanation he was given confused him, and caused him to resent those who lived in comfort, unaware of the battles being fought just outside their doorstep. Years passed. The boy known as Halbarad grew into a man. He learned to track and hunt, move about quietly, and stay alive in Eru forsaken corners of the land. It wasn’t long before his sword was bloodied and he earned his first scars. Little by little, he moved up in their world, gaining respect from those above him. The day his father fell in battle was a hard one for him. He wept without any shame and brought him home for a worthy funeral. At that point in time, he realized that it was up to him to protect his mother, and that he had to fill in the gap where his father had stood for so long. Perhaps his father had trained him for just such a purpose. At any rate, when he returned to the wilds, he went about his duty with a new zeal. Something about that point in his life also changed his opinion on those they protected. He envied them their lack of concern, and pitied them for living such petty lives. At any rate, this was the point in time at which he truly came into his own as a Dunedain. Then something happened that he had not expected in the least. A Dunedain he’d never met before, by the name of Aragorn, came to them and claimed his birthright. It left Halbarad stunned. He’d more than half expected that the line of kings had failed at last, and to see the man, proud and noble as he was, standing before him gave him quite a shock. At first, he was rather suspicious of him, and more than a little hesitant to trust him. After all, Halbarad had fought long and hard to secure what position he had with the Rangers, and here came this man, just a few years older than him, whom he’d never seen before, and this man had the gumption to become their leader. Yes, it irked him. What’s more, this man often disappeared on various ventures. It annoyed him, even if it was at the request of the Gray Pilgrim. Looking back, he wasn’t quite sure how it happened, but through the many toils they encountered, Halbarad came to vaguely respect Aragorn. Something about the man’s personality and nobility combined with his prowess caught Halbarad’s attention, and ere long he decided that he didn’t mind having a leader such as him. Somewhere along the line it developed into loyalty and some sort of friendship. Still, it surprised him when he learned that he was to be the second in command. As the hour grew later, Aragorn seemed to disappear more often and for longer stretches of time, which of course worried the man who’d come to admire him…and who would have to take the leadership if the Chieftain were to fall in battle. He asked about the ventures once or twice, but quickly learned that whatever was going on was of the utmost secrecy and he’d better not get too involved in it. It was in these slightly more recent years that he met a beautiful lady by the name of Mirnen, the daughter of one of the older rangers. His heart was lost and they wed. In the year 3016 they had a daughter they named Miriel. Suddenly Halbarad found that he had a rather large soft spot and became gentle as a lamb when dealing with his daughter. He found opportunities to spend time with her in Bree as often as possible, but as time progressed, that became increasingly difficult. Now he has been away from home for far too long for his taste, and what’s more, Aragorn has disappeared once again. Last anyone heard of him, he was near Bree, but where he went from there they either do not know, or they will not tell. Still, Halbarad has his suspicions, but he will keep them quiet and be ready to act should his lord command it. Misc. Info Sample RP: Ok, this is a post I did on another RP. The character is a arms dealer and a mercenary (lowlife scum basically).
Other: Ok, so there’s very (VERY) little about Halbarad in the book, so I’m seriously BSing most of this. If you guys notice that I got too carried away in making stuff up, or that I made up something that’s inaccurate, please tell me. I’m trying to keep it Cannon, but I’m sure I’m missing things here and there. I’m also curious as to where Halbarad would hang out until it’s time for the Gray Company…as that won’t happen for a very long time. Did you Read the Rules? (EDITED, ADMIN APPROVED) |
