Eowyn Wept. The sadness she had felt this past week had finally caught up with her, drowning her soul and numbing her body. Salty tears streaked freely down her face, creating lines running from her warm eyes, down towards her chin. She was knelt upon the ground, her knees covered only by a thin layer of material were aching against the cold stone of the floor. She didn’t care, she couldn’t care. The pain was all she had, it was what she knew, an old friend. There was no comfort for her, no warm hand upon her shoulder, no loving embrace to hold her. Eowyn was upon her knees in the throne room of King Théoden. Situated on top the hilled city known as Edoras, it was adorned with horse head carving and ornate decorations. Its gold and brown exterior spoke of rich and warm settings, but It held a cold heart at its centre. The throne room of Théoden King was in the centre of the hill top building, taking up most of the room, guarded at all times by the realms steadfast soldiers. No one got into the hall without the say so of the King, that was always the way. No enemy had stood in these halls, until now. Eowyn’s mind wondered briefly to the worm known as Grima. Eowyn was not sure herself how he had won her Uncles trust. Witchcraft she old herself, not truly knowing what to believe. It had all happened so quickly. The rest of the Hall was taken up by a small banqueting room, as well as private chambers. Men stood at the door and lined the walls from the room in which Eowyn was currently present. They did not speak, but stood, perhaps in their own worlds. Eowyn could feel her own despair, and wondered if the guards cared enough about what was happening to notice. Eowyn looked up, her eyes brimming with tears and sadness, and looked directly into her uncles. What she saw was a wizened old man, greying and aged, far before his time. His eyes were grey and clouded, distant and cold, like a reflection of the storm swept sky. His skin was a sickly grey colour, most usually found in the very old and the deceased. Fresh sobs shock her body, with a renewed strength of sadness. Where had it all gone wrong? She had his hands in her own, trying to warm them. They too were as cold as death and grey and sickly. She had rubbed them in her own, trying to invoke some reaction in her uncle, but so far it had been fruitless. King Théoden was a good King and a good man. Eowyn thought of him often as her Father. She had lost hers and her mother a long time ago when she and her Older brother Eomer were children. Scared and alone they had been, wondering what had happened to their parents. Uncle Théoden had taken them in and raised them as his own. Eowyn grew up with Eomer and Theodred, their cousin. She along with them had learned the use of Horse and sword, and developed skill to match any rider of the Mark. It was Eomer however that moved on to become a warrior. She had stayed behind, as women of her country should, and looked after the Uncle that had given her so much. A part of the Golden haired women desired adventure and travel, and another part of her told her that she was doing what she could, and getting a stable life out of it. Even with her strength, she felt so alone and so weak and so afraid. Théoden had fallen under a spell. The King had made himself an enemy, in the form of the White Wizard Sauruman, who will come later in our Tale. Eowyn did not know it, but it was not her uncles eyes that were fixed upon her, not really. Her Uncles mind had been consumed at the will of the Wizard. He and his servant, Grima were working together to bring Rohan to its knees, and so far it was going to plan. Eowyn and Eomer had suspicions, but the rest of the country had no earthly idea what was happening. "Uncle" Eowyn asked, fixing him again with her stare, hopeful even to the last. "Will you not speak to me? Will you do nothing?" She asked this, while shaking his hand slightly. Her Uncle had been sat on his throne for many days now, doing nothing, not sleeping, not eating. He sat gazing at nothing, lost in his own mind. he could not last much longer, his body was fail, and his mind overcome, lost in a trance. |

Eomer was led into the Golden Hall by Hama, the guard of Meduseld with the strange looks toward himself. Two Rohirrim accompanied Eomer following Eomer meters away led by Hama in. They had both been gazed the strangely as well. Nonetheless, all of three walked the hall to reach before the king. Every step they had taken caused in every single guard slowly slid their hand on the top of hilt of their sword which still stayed unsheathed. Eomer could hear the heavy breathings around. It was hard to understand who is a friend or a foe. However, guards whose number usually never exceeded on each both side more than the number of fingers of a hand, kept the distance. But their gaze still was on Eomer and his two companion. Eomer tried to walk down the floor as comfortably as possible between the onlooking eyes of the guards. He pretended like he did not care at all but it was hard to pass by unnoticed the cruel gazes upon him. Even though he was not looking, he could imagine. As far as he was concerned, the reason of having such hostile gazes was directly related with the effect of Grima. The counselor of the king, this was the rank at lesat given to him when he was firstly accepted into these halls by the king. Eomer looked barely at his pale face, Grima was usually set down near the king, seen as whispering something into the king's ear. Eomer knew not what words of treachery he whispered since his arrival. However, it was obvious that caused even a dark atmosphere descended into the Golden Hall. Old, usual and warm welcomes were replaced by the cold and gloomy ones. The Golden hall simply became a place of distrubance. Eomer stopped before the throne of the king and stepped forth to bow down whilst his men stayed behind silently and bow down afterwards. He saw Eowyn's sadness and tears of cry running down her face. Her face was filled with gloom, expressing the hope which was lost too long ago. She was kneeled before desperately looking at the men sat in his throne. Once the strong man in both physically and mentelly in the eye of his people had turned into a man of shame like a rat closed in. That strong man was caged and his appearance was shadowed, exchanged by one that never meant to be his uncle. As if cast a spell, Theoden, the golden haired king of golden hall was transformed into someone Eomer could not recognize no more. "My king" Eomer mustered a word out of his mouth in a single breath, inclined his head down to stare at his uncle's eyes. "Uncle" followed in coming breath. His uncle did not respond to both or made any gesture or mimics that he had recognized Eomer's presence. But Eomer put up his all courage. "My king, our men have reported that recently a smoke rose up from Isengard spreading over our lands, affecting our crops, people mortally. The word had it that the white wizard was no more at our side." |

How had it come to this? In her mind’s eye she could see Theoden as he once was, a proud and stern king. They used to go on rides together from time to time. Now Snowmane grew fat and lazy in the fields and much to her dismay, so did Windfola. These days she was forced to watch the man who’d been her father most of her life wither and it was tearing her apart. How much longer could she stand this? This man, this creature was not something she knew anymore, and yet her love and her duty bound her to stand by and watch. If one of the riders was forced to watch their family being slowly murdered, it would have been considered torture. The irony was not lost on her. Hearing the footsteps approach, she took a deep, shuddering breath and tried to suppress the tears that ran rampantly down her cheeks. Somehow she hadn’t heard them enter the hall. She’d allowed her emotions to override her usual precautions. Silently, she chastised herself. This was not a time to be caught unawares, not with the king ailing, Theodred and Eomer away hunting orcs, and Grima lurking in the shadows. There had to be someone to keep an eye on all that happened in Edoras when all others who where loyal and of rank were away. Although, considering the fact that Rohan was rotting from within, there might not be much to look after ere long. Sitting perfectly still on the edge of the dais, she allowed her eyes to move furtively toward whoever had just entered the hall. Then all the tension left her, or at least a fair portion of it. Eomer! Part of her wanted to rush toward him and embrace her brother, but she simply turned her head to face him more directly and sent a worried look his way. Studying him more closely, she noted that he was walking in a casual manner, but something within her knew it could not be genuine. She could not imagine her brother ever becoming that comfortable with the way things were going. Listening to Eomer speak, she turned her eyes to the king and waited for some expression to cross his face, some sign, however faint that he heard his nephew’s words. There was none and she felt the grip of despair tighten. The feeling became worse when her sibling’s words registered in her mind. “What is Sauroman doing now?” she asked, some of her bitterness escaping on her tone. Her sharp, inquiring glance shot up toward her brother for a moment before she bowed her head. If a change could come and make things even worse, she suspected that this new activity from Sauron was that change’s harbinger. [I apologize for the length] |

Eomer turned to look at Eowyn, hearing her voice that was speaking the words filled with the gloom. As gloomy as it sounded to him, it was true either. The single tear of lady of Rohan was poured down her eyes to her cheek, forming like a line as it turned to black. Seeing as how Eowyn leant upon the edge of the dais before the king's throne, laid dull as a dead body, she was slightly slanted for the foot of the grizzly king. Eomer was startled at her sorrowful voice, not expecting to hear of her voice which was unexpected , better to put this way, or unheard of when a marshal ever came into king's presence. However, Eowyn was not of someone that Eomer would put his rank of marshal before his family. He was not that kind of man who became cockier as he promoted rank by rank. Though he would not mind, there were manners that he had to apply before the king. Unfortunately, the king was in no condition to watch out for Eomer's manners though would Grima. Out of corner of his eye, he looked at the pale skinned, oval shaped man clinged to the king like his twin, never leaving him be, none beside like a leech, so to speak. Eomer would have shot him a scowl but he respected his king, his halls, Rohan as a whole. Being heard of Eowyn's shrill tone, Eomer looked at her with a rather puzzled eyes. He said without really going into details. "Nothing good" he expressed with few words he managed in order not to fall her into any more despair, reminding himself that Grima's eyes would be watching. He turned his gaze back to the king sitting in his throne, looking awkwardly towards the floor. He bended over his one knee, turning his gaze at Eowyn again, extending his arm downwards to get her up. "I cannot be quite open to you in here" he whispered at her in a single breath. "Come on let me help you up. You should not be here, Eowyn. Our uncle would not want you watching him seeing him as weaker" (Sorry writer's block) |

Why did he seem to be surprised that she was here? Did he honestly expect her to stay cloistered in this prison without having any contact with those she loved? No. It was her duty to stay by Theoden’s side, even now as he became a shadow of his former self. Indeed, indignation filled her. It was not as if she enjoyed being in such company, but what choice did she have? “I could have said as much,” she retorted in a voice that threatened to break. Lowering her face to avoid the gazes of those around her, she rubbed the backs of her hands across her eyes, removing the tears from her face. She was a daughter of Rohan, stern and proud. She would not allow herself to keep up this pitiful display with so many eyes watching and so few of them friendly. It was then that she followed his wary glance at Grima, and then she understood. She could hardly blame anyone for wanting to hold their tongues around that serpent. Part of her even wondered if there was something darker to him than any had guessed. It was probably wisest to keep all important information as far away from him as possible. The worthless man would probably sell his own mother if it would give him any profit. Moreover, there was something about the way the worm looked at her in particular that made her want to wash her face and hands in the nearest basin. How had that man ever come to be in Theoden King’s counsel? Eowyn looked apologetically at her brother, but didn’t give voice to the words. They could not be spoken here and her meaning would surely be clear enough without them. Eomer bent down and offered her a hand up, whispering an explanation to her. What a sad situation they were in! The kin of the king, both of whom were entirely loyal to Rohan and the crown, were forced to speak in secret about those matters most important to their country’s survival. This had to be some cruel joke, but sadly it was one that they had to live with. Taking the offered hand, she pulled herself to her feet and then leaned forward to hug him. “It is good to see you back, hale and hearty as ever,” she said, a wane smile touching her face. “Come, let’s see if the kitchens have anything for you. You must be hungry after your ride,” she prattled on, leading him toward the kitchen. Truly, it wouldn’t hurt for him to nab a bite to eat unless she guessed wrongly, but more importantly, they might be spared Grima’s presence. “How fares Theodred?” she asked as she walked. (it's fine, my muse isn't cooperating either) |
