![]() General Information: Name: Barliman Butterbur Gender: Male Homeland: Man of Bree Age: 59 In the Service of: Barliman serves no one in particular save those who enter his Inn, but he is Master there. From there, none. Steed: Barliman owns a single horse, for himself, and several smaller ponies, for carrying things as well as so that his two Hobbit servants can move more swiftly to gather supplies Description Physical Description: Barliman is an elderly chap, and quite round, with a bald head and a nicely-shaven beard, considering his location in the North. Barliman stands 5 foot five, about normal height of a man, though he feels short due to his Inn's regulars, save for the Hobbits. Barliman is quite the well-off man, and thus, he can afford to be quite round, and is. In his younger years he was a hairy man, and he still is, but his head's losing hair, more and more as the years go by. The color, however, has remained a consistent brown straw color, and curly throughout. His sideburns come down his face and chin, until it gets to his knobby chin, turning up into a goatee-like bit, wirey throughout. His face is a bit ruddy, and certainly aged, wrinkled with time. His eyes a dull, muddy brown, and his mouth seems hidden under his wooly facial hair. His clothing is simple, often browns, greens, and tans, and he always seems to wear his apron, except when in his night clothes, a bluish shirt, pants, and cap. The man walks with a slight hunch, but it is easily remedied, it being simply muscle memory that causes him to hunch over from waiting on the bar and serving food. Avatar: David Weatherley Personality: Barliman is a kind old fellow, willing to take in anyone who is respectful and can pay. Not without a heart, he cares for his customers, but he won't go over too far of an edge to help them out. Kind and caring to his two Hobbit servants, he seems stern to those who do not know him, but still caring regardless. Always friendly, he engages in city gossip of the wider world like everyone else, but unlike most of his Inn's patrons, he is unwilling to get involved, instead offering a neutral place in the Prancing Pony. He does listen, and he is indeed concerned, considering the war going on seems to be of somewhat epic proportions, but what can a barman do? Of all his traits, Barliman's memory is the most notable. He has aboslutely no space to spare in his head, as one thing comes in and kicks something else out. Someone will ask him to do something and he will be unable on account of simply forgetting, and that has gotten him in a bit of trouble before. But he is the first to admit his faults, but somehow he always is willing to do things for people, forgetting before he does them. History: Barliman Butterbur was born the son of the owner of the Prancing Pony Inn, the most priestigeous Inn in all of Bree. Raised to be a barman, he did his job well, and soon became its barkeep. Good at math but forgetful overall, he eventually replaced his father as the barkeep and head of the Prancing Pony, and it continued to prosper, even moreso than before. He even had enough money to hire two servants, Bob and Nob the Hobbits. But soon, events began to transpire in the outside world that made his place a kind of meeting place for those involved with greater conflicts. The Rangers, as they always did, continued to come and sit silently, and strange folk from far-off lands began to show up more. One of these was Gandalf the Grey, an older man with a long gray beard and long hat, dressed in gray robes. He came and went often, inquiring into who ahd come and gone recently, yet paying much each time he did so. Eventually, Gandalf left Barliman a letter to send to Frodo Baggins of the Shire. He forgot to do this entirely. When a Hobbit named Frodo Underhill and three other Hobbits appeared, he thought nothing of it, though when Frodo disappeared he thought it strange indeed, as did many of his customers. But once Frodo was revealed to be Frodo Baggins, he remembered the letter, revealing to Frodo Gandalf's safety and that he had intended for Frodo and Sam to leave much earlier than they ultimately had. Later, the Ranger Strider moved the four Hobbits to a nearby inn, and Barliman was paid to act as though Frodo and the others were in his inn, telling the four cloaked riders that they were not to be disturbed. But they overwhelmed him, and he hid in fear as they went to do their deed, discovering Frodo and companions gone. Barliman hid, as not to suffer their wrath. The next day, Gandalf the Grey reappeared, furious with Barliman he had not sent the letter, but suddenly very glad once he discovered that Frodo and the others were safe and with Strider. He even went so far as to bless Barliman's beer before disappearing on a strangely beautiful white horse. Since then, business has been booming. |
