After 72 hours on her feet, rest was coming to greet her. The blankets embraced her like a warm mother, diluting her aches and her anxieties. She had made it, and now she was allowed to sleep. The smell of tuna never left her fingers, but she didn't care, at that point. Survival had become a full time job, and she was becoming extremely good at it.

Just when she was slipping into a placid state of blissful relaxation, the noise began. The depository of all her love was also the source of all her stress, and the affection given was returned in the form of screams and fetid refuse. She pushed a pillow over her own head, hoping she would quiet the screams, but it was not working.

The high pitched wailing struck her body like a lightning, leaving that acrid taste in the roof of her mouth. She was, again, wide awake, trembling, and feeling her life was being drained through her eardrums. She stood up, and walked towards the little angel. It had been born with teeth and hair; huge, grotesque, misshaped. It had broken her on arrival, and destroyed her life afterwards. And she was supposed to love the screaming beast. She pressed a pillow against the gaping hole of its mouth, and didn't move until the noise was long gone. She felt a cold finger tracing her spine, but the noise was gone. She went back to sleep, to relax, to forget. Silence hugged her tighter than any blanket, with its cold breath whispering "Murderer" in her ears.

She was surprised to discover that a whisper inside her head was so much powerful than a scream from a cot.

ACCOUNTS

  • OOC Accounts: Or Out Of Character accounts. Every player has one. It allows the player to post in the areas that are out of the game. This account doesn't represent any character, but the player himself. It cannot be used to post in game.
  • Character Accounts: This represents the characters in the game. It cannot be used to post Out Of Character content.
  • ST Accounts: Players who become StoryTellers, are given a ST account. This account has wider access both IC and OOC, but can only be used in the context of the story the ST is working in. Using this account in any other context is not permitted.
  • Moderator Accounts: This accounts belong to the board Moderators. Their posts are always OOC, even when they post in an area that is in game (freezing a thread while some dispute is sorted out, for example).
  • Every new member can create one OOC account.
  • Players cannot create Character Accounts.
  • Character accounts are created by Moderators, and assigned to players.
  • Once a player becomes a StoryTeller, he will be given a ST account, with ST access in game.
CHARACTERS

  • The characters in Theatre of Souls are, in a way, truth seekers. Anything goes; any archetype extracted from the real world will work in the game environment.
  • Characters who are more detached from our most immediate society will find it easier to explore the supernatural side of the game.
  • Characters who are more involved with the most mundane aspects of society, and who are better integrated in the every day life, will find it harder to interact with the supernatural side of the game.
  • Every character has three values that represent how detached they are from society, and how close they are to their own divinity:

    1. Soul Imbalance: This value, ranging from 0 to 500, represents the global degree of detachment from every day's society.
A character with a value of 0 SI, will be absolutely integrated, and unable to believe that anything other than what they can see, hear, or feel is real. These characters will find it easy to justify anything using science, pseudo science, or just cheap rationalism.
On the other side of the scale, characters with a SI of 500 will no longer belong among other humans; he would be the equivalent of a God, no longer concerned about menial issues, and living in alien worlds in different dimensions.
    2. Soul Grade: Ranging from I to V, the Grade of the Soul represents the level of internal coherence and adaptability of the Soul. The Grade depends entirely on the Concordial and the Discordial Traits of the Soul (Tarot Cards).
Characters with a Grade V Soul are less likely to be changed in their journey towards divinity; they are more protected against chaos and disarray. The negative side of this, is that they are less likely to practice any kind of magic, or to develop any supernatural abilities.
Characters with a Grade I Soul are very likely to be drastically changed in their journey towards divinity. Internal crisis make their own Soul boil, and express itself in explosive manners. Their trip is much more hazardous, and they undergo terrible transformations and moments of despair every step of the way. The positive aspect is that they are much more likely to understand the nature of magic, and to develop spontaneous supernatural abilities.
    3. SI Tier: This value comes from the relationship between the SI and the Soul Grade. A character with a Soul Grade of I will climb up a new Tier every 10 points of SI, while a character with a Soul Grade of V will need 50 SI points to achieve a new Tier.
Every Tier is a new crisis. Every crisis presents the possibility of supernatural events manifesting around the character. Characters with a low Soul Grade experience plenty of crisis situations in their trip to divinity.
  • Characters earn SI points when facing moments of horror, madness, shock, when facing the supernatural, when their own flaws overcome them, and when they get detached in any way from society.
  • Characters with higher SI values are more likely to succumb to their own flaws (Discordial Traits), while characters with a lower SI value are more likely to enjoy the blessings of their Concordial Traits.

PLAYING MULTIPLE CHARACTERS

  • Players can play as many characters as they want, providing there are stories to host them.
  • Each player can only have one Active Core Character at a time. Core Characters interact out of the context of the Stories, and are expected to have a longer life.
  • Each player can play up to one character in each separate story, always subject to the specific StoryTeller's decision.
  • Characters played by the same player cannot, under any circumstance, interact. They cannot inhabit the same threads, in fact.
BASIC ETIQUETTE

  • No metagaming.
  • No bunnying.
  • No white knighting.
  • Once you post, wait until your thread partner(s) have already posted, or a week has passed with no replies, before posting again.
  • Do not copy other players' dialogue in your posts in order to reply; find ways around that, and try to make it read like a single thing, not a literary collage.
  • Read what other players create.
  • Read other player's sheets, or their summaries.
  • Let the world affect your character; invulnerable characters are boring.
NON PLAYING CHARACTERS

  • The job of playing NPCs (Non Playing Characters) befalls on the Moderators (for the whole board), and on the StoryTellers (for specific Stories).
  • Players can "play" menial NPCs in their posts, as reactions to their characters, within reason.
  • Unless clearly stated by the Moderators, players cannot play any NPC of supernatural origin.
  • NPCs played by players cannot be paramount to the story, nor have a deciding impact on the character's evolution.
  • Under no circumstance a player can play an official, existing, NPC, or play another PC (active or retired) as an NPC.
STORIES

  • New Stories need to be approved by at least one Moderator.
  • Players can present their submissions to the StoryTeller in the pertinent thread.
  • The StoryTeller has the last word about which characters are approved, and which are rejected, although Moderators have veto rights, as long as they are not involved as players.
  • Story threads need to be labelled, using a prefix in the thread title. For example: A story called "Dying Dogs", would have a {DD} prefix in every thread.
  • StoryTellers have full NPC control, and full authority within the threads that belong to that story.
  • Unless otherwise specified, Moderator approved, and Storyteller approved, Core Characters cannot enter any Story specific thread.
  • Story oriented characters cannot, under any circumstances, post outside of the context of the Story specific threads.
  • Stories need to begin and finish. If the narrative becomes stagnant, Moderators can pressure StoryTellers to push it, or even pause or close the story.
  • Stories are not Sandbox areas; if the Story deviates too much from the proposed themes and original idea, Moderators will be forced to intervene.
  • Even though there is an underlying idea behind every story, this doesn't mean that there is need for determinism; StoryTellers should never write the ending of their Stories beforehand.
  • If a Playing Character dies in a Story, the StoryTeller can allow the player to create a new one, as long as the character performs a different dramatic function, or has a different area of influence.
  • When a Story ends, all currently active and alive characters in the Story are honourably retired. They could be brought back in a sequel, but they cannot become Core Characters.
