It's too bad commercials are such a necessity, because Toonami had to cut a lot of sweet anime intros to make room for shameless Fruit Rollup plugs. Check out my picks here, and then talk about your own. http://www.toonamifan.com/toonamishortchanged.html |

I've always liked the custom Mobile Suit Gundam intro more than the actual intro, which is almost so bad it nearly made my ears bleed. The custom intro is awesome, splicing together money shots, credits from the writers, with awesome layered percussion and beats that seamlessly weave into probably the most dramatic piece from the MSG BGM for the final ten seconds. Plus, the Toonami intro was so awesome that Bandai's DVDs eventually began using it over the original intro. How can you find fault with it? |

I don't blame you. MSG became little more than a footnote to Toonami, which is unfortunate but the truth. Here's a comparison: wait, there is no comparison. Toonami intro: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0COzRluoV8 Original intro: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGDTdcgIIP8&feature=related |

OH, hehe. I thought you were accusing me of stupidity for including it on my list. I had to double check just to make sure I hadn't! But yes, I very much agree - although just about ANYTHING would have been better than that annoying original intro. Ultimately the series was a victim of its own age, at least on Toonami. The US general audience had been exposed to flashier installments (Wing, G) and just didn't buy it. Then again, Gundam Seed is essentially a flashy remake and it tanked too. <_< |

I'm sorry for making it seem I was accusing you of stupidity. The fact, though, that Toonami went the extra mile and beyond to construct such an intro shows how dedicated Toonami was back then. Yeah, MSG was in trouble before the 9/11 attacks, which buried it for good. Gundam Wing, Gundam 0080, and The 08th MS Team are just flashier and newer looking (don't think G Gundam had come along yet). At the same time, the show may not have worked anyway if Bandai had chosen to introduce it first. Toonami was still airing plenty of retro shows in 2001 (I think) so MSG didn't really stick out like a sore thumb. I just don't think the American audience likes the original story in any form. Even SEED's gloss couldn't get it to sell. Of course, SEED's attempt to be a merch seller was much more bald-faced than MSG ever was, and American audiences may have seen through it. I don't know. Toonami gave SEED a good intro too, even though it was far more subdued and morbid (Flay's weary remark on war would not have flown on Toonami intros on 2001). |

Here's a few other Toonami intros that beats the original intros, I think: GJ Joe http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUOEAPfILiE Worthy just for the cheesiest line ever: "Eat hot knuckles, snakeface!" Cyborg 009 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gY2toKLBhwc Mostly because I think the original OP is terrible. A lot of people will freak at this, but these three Yuyu Hakusho intros beat all of the original OPs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V24ePGebJO0&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_AoZZQEpSM&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxNMbUUirEA&feature=related Especially the one in the middle, because of the superb dialogue choices. "Shouldn't we hide under something?" And the G Gundam intros: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E7d3sI6iqcU&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0m1uRMCpqo4&feature=related And, finally, just for kicks: the Hamtaro Toonami intro: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HuFuT1kULqo&feature=related |
