And by 'classic' I mean 'shamelessly lifted from the pages of a Wizard Anime Invasion'. The nice term for it is 'preserving'. That makes me a historian and not a plagiarist. http://www.toonamifan.com/toonamiclassicinterview.html |

This is an interesting article, though I should note that there is code all over the document, which makes it annoying, but not impossible, to read. But that is an intriguing look at what Toonami could have been. It looks like the plan was to push Toonami in a gradually more mature direction over time, but of course Adult Swim came along. And look, much of those shows Akins mentions there ended up on AS. As for Samurai X, I think Akins was overconfident over what the block could be. By the way he admitted Rurouni Kenshin's problems in a later interview, it seems he was greatly underestimating how younger audiences would tolerate something like Rurouni Kenshin, or the Samurai X OVAs, and he only learned his lesson the hard way after RK struggled with younger audiences and tended to attract adults and older teens. It also didn't help that the Williams Street edit of the show was highly inconsistent, with several swear words and some blood still in, which may have horrified enough parents to get their kids away from the TV when RK came on. That would have dragged down the ratings even more. |

Thanks for the tip about the special characters. Every time I write an article in Word it gets screwed up in IE. So much for Microsoft products working together... You're definitely right about the edit, but it didn't help that RK was just an inconsistent show by nature. The first season was pretty much perfect Toonami material aside from a bit of cursing, but I know firsthand that it lost a lot of younger viewers when it hit the Meiji arc in season two. There's not really any way to make Saito vs. Kenshin TV-Y7. |
