Love the article and the album. For people who'll never be able to obtain the disc... I point you to Joe Boyd Vigil's Deep Space Bass Last FM Page, which in includes all the tracks in their entirety [from what I know anyway..] Throwing you back to 2001... |

Yup. I own the disc, and I have this nutty desire to get Joe Boyd Vigil to sign it... Don't know how likely he is to give his address to a crazy fan, though.

Ah yes, Deep Space Bass... I'll give a track by track review in your style, Nick. 1. Ignition: A total classic. Used in the 'Advanced Robotics' promo, it has a steady beat and a growing sense of doom or danger throughout. To me I can picture some images of a city being destroyed while someone looks on; it also brings back memories of the promo itself. Perhaps one of the best tracks on the whole CD. 2. Gundams Are On Earth: Sounds quite sleek. Also has a sense of dread and excitment; uses some clips from the actual series of Gundam Wing, that being the violins. 3. Anvil Snare Remix: Used in later Sailor Moon promos. It actually is in fact a remix; the 'twinkling' sound at 0:38 is the original beat used in the earlier various Toonami promos. Quite funky and catchy. 4. Dragon: Honestly, I recall this music being used for DBZ but I don't know when. I do think that it seems to not sound too good in it's extended form. The basslines are the main point of the track, and are put together rather well. It's just not quite my cup of tea. 5. Information Leak: I don't remember this one at all. However, I'm not a big Gundam fan. I do like it though. Remenicent of Ignition, but sounds much more upbeat. 6. Arabic: Where to start with this one... Well, I don't like this version. It isn't the version used in the DBZ promos, although it contains much of the same musical elements. Sounds far too slow and...I dunno. I just don't think it measured up to any of our expectations after hearing the Toonami version. 7. D & B Remix: Used for the original Midnight Run. I cannot stress how much I love this track. Sounds incredibly cool, and it's about 90% of what it sounded like during it's Toonami appearance. The beep bass and dreamy sounds make my feel like I really am aboard the Absolution later than I should be. 8. Depthcharge: Used for Blue Submarine Number 6 promos, it was rarely played for more than 15 seconds. Sounds good though. Has a bit of a serious submarine military flare to it, which is appropriate. The small 'drop' sounds are akin to water, and the beats sound electronic enough to remind someone of an underwater radar system. 9. Tension: Another favorite. Slow to start, but the speedy version in the middle is great. The light scratch sounds, deep bass, and Japanese instrument samples really mix well and give a sense of being in rural Japan. Oh, and Ayeka was always my favorite Tenchi girl. 10. Prayer: Yet another classic; used for TOM1's intro to Toonami. I can see him riding up that elevator right now to give us some shows. 11. Cashgroove: Yet another one that I don't remember. Sounds alright though. 12. Puff and Bass: This was used for the Powerpuff Girls intro/promos and later from the Dragonball promos. Defintently sounds cute while sounding like a true Toonami beat. 13. Darknight: Not the actual track used for the Batman promos. Sounds alright, although it can be a little rough on the ears at times. Played during the TOM3 Trunks saga intros. 14. Starwind: Sounds epic. I can picture Gene Starwind running around blowing holes in people with his huge-ass guns and all kinds of random things exploding, all while that neko-babe who's name I can't remember just stands around and looks hot. Contains samples from Twlight Suzuka's theme from the actual Outlaw Star soundtrack, that being the pipe or flute sounding instrument. 15. Capslock: I remember this one less from Ronin Warriors and more from Zoids: Zero. Sounds rough, but cool. Defintently worth it to listen to this one a few times, as it can take a little getting used to all the mechanical style elements. 16. Broken Promise: Legendary. This was my favorite track of them all, because the promo it was in just was so inspiring. As a kid, it let me know that as I was growing up there would be very serious decisions I would have to make. The sound to this is just so great. With a slow tempo, it has a sense of mystery and nostalgia about it. Sounds a bit lonely, but to me it emphasizes that we all have to deal with things on our own from time to time. 17. Walking Stick: A very cool track. I play it when I want to blow stuff up when I'm gaming, or need to get somewhere fast. Sounds very sleek and cool, almost sly. 18. Spacetime: I don't recall at all where this is from. Another track that seems alright to me, although I think it's a bit boring. ...Well there you have it, a mini-review for every track on Deep Space Bass. I hope that you enjoyed it. ^^ |

Everytime I get the chance to hear these songs, I get hit with so many memories. The majority of the songs are very enjoyable and almost can be sort of relaxing. They really got me into the mood when they played on Toonami during those years. |

I listened to most of this on last.fm while studying for my classes last night. Unfortunately, it nearly put me to sleep. It starts out all right, with Ignition and Gundams Are On Earth plowing straight ahead and getting my attention. But until Prayer shows up, it is a slow downward spiral. By the time Tension began I was nearly asleep. Then it slowly gets better until the very end, which is a bit of downer. I love Starwind, Capslock, and Broken Promise in particular, those tracks definitely got my attention. Even though Megamix is flooded with Toonami quotes I still prefer the energy and life in Klarknova's work over Joe Boyd's slow, methodical work. |

If it means anything I was sifting through Toonami promos on the Arsenal the other day and they were STILL Playing Capslock as late as fall 2005, when they used it to announce Batman vs. Dracula. Edit: Check the Oct. 22, 2005 promo to hear it. |

Found above promo on YT: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ed8U1mSdLsc&feature=related It's easily identifible by Capslock's trademark hissing. |

Well, quick track by track review of Deep Space Bass: 1. "Ignition". After SARA's quick background infodump, the track begins in earnest, building up into a doom-laden track that suggests consequences and destruction. Horns come in to enhance the drama of the track, giving it spectacular layers. It does remind me of the "Advanced Robotics" promo, and it fits that promo so well . . . 2. "Gundams Are On Earth". The violins quickly prove that this track is going to be something else. Very dramatic and hard to forget. After some buildup, the track explodes into a drum barrage that matches the strings perfectly. A standout, though perhaps a bit too reliant on Ko Otani's score. 3. "Anvil Snare Remix". Odd that a supposed Sailor Moon track was never played before Sailor Moon (well, not this version anyway). Something very similar to this appeared in the soundtrack to the 2000 Spider-Man PS game, which is why it felt kind of familar. Very funky bass, but Nick is right in that it doesn't really lead anywhere. 4. "Dragon". Another track that doesn't go anywhere. Good basslines, but otherwise it just repeats itself endlessly. It could have been much shorter. 5. "Information Leak". A supposed Gundam Wing track that never appeared in promos or intros, apparently. Very eerie and creepy, it is hard to forget that piano, which is reminiscent of a horror film. Very spectacular track. 6. "Arabic". Another remix, it takes a while for it to get going, but it keeps stopping and restarting, like a dying car. Not exactly a great cut. 7. "D & B Remix". Never got to experience this track, but it is undeniably awesome. It brings Toonami to mind just upon listening. 8. "Depthcharge". Very long, but doesn't get old. I liked the grinding noises, sounds of nature, and the beats together. Sounds very military, which is fitting. 9. "Tension". Very Eastern-sounding, which fits the content of Tenchi Muyo. Still, this track seems more fitting to put me to sleep than anything else, it almost made me nod off the first time I listened to it. 10. "Prayer". I don't remember this one, but I don't have to. Cool track, but nothing overly remarkable. 11. "Crashgroove". This was used for a Crash Bandicoot game review. Pounding drums and bass give it an intense feel. 12. "Puff and Bass". Probably the most upbeat cut. Seems fitting for little kids, which makes sense since it was used for PPG and Dragonball. Dance-ready at the same time. 13. "Hyperspace". Pounding and intense, the electronica equilvalent to speed metal. Very hard to forget, in a good way. It never lets up until the end, with quick bass and pounding drum rolls. 14. "Starwind". This track uses two Outlaw Star songs, "Loneliness" and "Suzuka", and the track is constructed around both of them. Very spectacular track, and is the most layered of them all. You can just picture Outlaw Star when you listen to this cut. 15. "Capslock". My personal favorite. I love the hissing noises and mechanical flavor. Seems fitting for sci-fi shows. 16. "Broken Promise". Doesn't really go anywhere, but is a nice downtempo track. Lonely sounding, but it fits the promo well. 17. "Walking stick" Sleek and sly, it is virtually unchanged from the promo that introduced it. I like it. 18. "Spacetime". Understated ending that may be the best track on the CD. Very layered and special-sounding. Just makes me think of traveling through space on a rocketship. More details tomorrow. |
