Mackenzie thinks CN might finally be getting a clue. Rejoice!

Nice article and I really do hope most of that stuff happen this fall. Toonami has been a really great brand and although I might be a bit bias, I believe it could really help CN if done with care.

Good job, Mac! As you said, it's all up to CN from here on. A critique of your points with my opinions:

1) I agree that the whole 4 hours of Friday night should be committed to the "fantasy/adventure" block. However, CN has been known to premiere shows on the Friday block & repeat some of them later in the night. That way, CN doesn't have to fill the block with 4 hours of original shows. Yet, with only 3 new shows (counting SW:TCW) for the fall, repeating 3 shows only gives 3 hours for CN. Even with B:TB&TB coming in Spring 2009, that's 4, but it's like Adult Swim's programming; 1.5 or 2 hours repeated at the end of the night. They have to put some programming from the current Toonami & acquire other shows. Maybe have 1 or 2 encores (TCW & possibly B10:AF) toward the end of the night, but no more.

2) I agree that the action block should be in place before SW:TCW arrives. We know The Clone Wars theatrical movie hits Aug. 15; premiering the new block in mid-July or Aug. 1 guarantees a place to promo the movie & promo the series after the movie comes out. Even if the block starts Aug. 15, you can promo the movie as well as the new series. Right now, May 15 is Thursday (tomorrow); CN usually promos big series or events a month in advance. Do they have plans in place to start promos on June 15 or July 15?

3) To us, calling the "new block" Toonami is a no-brainer. However, we wonder sometimes if CN has any brains... :D If CN wants to make this a "new block", they either have to revamp Toonami (TOM 5? D 2?! SARA 3?!?), create totally new packaging or worse... minimal packaging. Remember Friday Night Premiere Thunder & Premiere Laser? No hosts & very basic & boring bumps. New Thursday Nights are working & that's the Comedy block; no hosts & basic bumps. How well with The Clone Wars do if CN assumes people care about the show & not the environment (package) it's in? Give your star performers a stage to shine on!

4) This is tricky territory; I'm not totally against your idea, but does CN have the guts to follow through? With allowing TV-PG DSV material, you're edging toward the older tween/young teen audience; up to 12 & 13, if not crossing into 14. I've always thought Toonami could be turned into a teen action block to compete with TEENick on Saturdays. The question is: Will CN reach out to even part of the 12-17 teen demo somehow, or will they continue to assume they stay up to watch [adult swim]? Except for ACTN Saturdays that currently has more TV-PG & TV-14 than TV-MA (some episodes of Shin-Chan), most of the new comedies are TV-MA, with some of the reruns & new episodes of Family Guy & American Dad being TV-14. Unless CN finally decides to put TV-14 series on (Bleach, Code Geass, maybe Gurren Lagann or uncut Shippuden or Gundam 00), TV-14 & TV-MA will continue to be on [adult swim]. If CN really wants to copy Nick & Disney, start aiming for the teen demo in animation.

5) Again, does CN have the brains to go after Spectacular Spider-Man or will they let it slip through their fingers to CW4Kids or 4Kids TV on Fox?
EDITED: Looks like Spidey stays on CW4Kids, formerly known as Kids WB.
Same question about Hulk: Gamma Corps; will they go for it or let Nicktoons Network score another Marvel property? As you said, the cartoon must be quality & done right; another Fantastic Four-type show will cause CN to forfeit almost all Marvel properties to Nicktoons or even Nick.

6) I agree with Gundam 00 being mildly edited; not so much about Gurren Lagann. 00 could relaunch the Gundam franchise in America. TTGL has wackiness & a good story & action to back it up. But, will Yoko & some of the antics be considered too much fanservice for CN? Will Yoko get digital breast reduction to fit into her bikini top or will the top be digitally enlarged to cover her?! :P BTW, a dub for Gurren Lagann won't be ready until 1st Qtr. 2009 at the earliest. Can either CN or [as] wait that long? I prefer GL uncut with its TV-14 rating on [as] anyway.

You'd be surprised how fast a 26ish episode series can be dubbed. If they already started working on Gurren they could have it ready by Fall (or Gundam 00 for that matter but I think Gurren will be their priority at the moment). So it could either replace Code Geass in Fall (since Code Geass R2 isn't licensed yet and probably wont be for a while) or it could join Toonami at least by November if not earlier. While Gundam 00 probably wont come to TV until Spring of 2009 but it's possible it could be ready by Fall if Bandai sends them to different studios to be dubbed (and they probably will).

Now that you mention this, did Cartoon Network mention a specific time that the new action block would start?

Are you sure? The previous articles on ToonZone indicated the Friday block would launch in the fall. It's possible they could launch in August, but if it's fall, that's September at the earliest to me.

I guess it can be done fast... Sci Fi is saying that Gurren Lagann will be on July 28 with the first 2 episodes. It's strange, since Black Jack follows it @12:00 AM but is only on for 1 hour. They showed the Black Jack movie during Ani-Tuesdays I think, & it's 105 minutes long. That's enough with commercials for 2 hours. If this is a dub, let's see if they screw it up or not. I thought the sub DVD's were starting to come out in September.

Also, if this appears to be true, Sci Fi is waking up that there's more anime for the licensing than just Manga Entertainment/Starz Media. This could really be a challenge to Adult Swim, at least on Monday nights. Now will Sci Fi be willing to expand Ani-Monday to 3 hours?

I can't believe Toonami lost pretty much every chance to air any of these series mentioned. I really thought Cartoon Network would do something with the block by the fall.

Gundam and Gurren are on Sci Fi.

One Piece may never return.

Clone Wars, Secret Saturdays, and Ben 10 AF Season 2 won't be on Toonami.

X Men is going to Nicktoons Network.

I'm probably overreacting, but sometimes I think Toonami just can't win.

It doesn't look good, but Toonami will survive... in its current 2-hour Brain-Dead Coma. Naruto filler will continue... assuming Double Premieres aren't interrupted by any special events, the remaining 25 episodes will be finished on 12/06/08. This is just guessing & it depends if and/or when TNT encores SW:TCW... IMHO, the 2nd hour is The Secret Saturdays (encore) followed by SW:TCW (encore).

I hope I'm wrong, but I'm afraid the new block won't be Toonami, Dynamite Action Squad (DAS) stays with their kid hosts & current lineup on Sat. mornings (B10:AF has encores of the Friday premieres), and Toonami contiues to be the Naruto/encore block... until Naruto filler ends. Then What?!

I wondering if when Mr. DeMarco said in that interview there would be new originals coming to Toonami, he was talking about Secret Saturdays/Clone Wars. Maybe Toonami was going to show those shows at one point, but CN wanted something different. Wouldn't surprised me.

Hopefully I'm wrong about this, but knowing my luck, I'll be right.

Then shippuden starts up, along with the plot and the ratings will probably upswing, hopefully drawing some attention to toonami.

It's a shaky theory and alien force might deter a few due to similarities but it's still a possibility and we have to stay positive.
