Excellent. I just rewatched Gundam Wing for the first time in years just to see what my true opinion of it was. It is indeed nostalgic but I've come to terms that it just isn't as special as it led on as an individual series. It was VERY special in what it did for anime in America, as you stated, however. And for that I'm thankful. If it wasn't for Wing then I never would have been able to see my favorite Gundam series, Zeta Gundam, nor would I have been able to see the original, or other spin-offs that came after it. I don't dislike Wing like some hardcore Gundam fans do though. It was just an average show with some really boring and strange characters who worked under very strange logic. It was passable though and I did get some enjoyment out of it. It's a shame Gundam didn't take off as much as it could have. I was surprised Seed didn't do well. It makes me wonder if it would have fared better on weekday afternoons instead of Saturday nights. It was already censored to hell anyway. But it seemed like the type of series that modern anime fans would enjoy. Same thing with Gundam 00 which would have been on Toonami for sure if it wasn't already doomed by Seed. America did get lots of exposure to Gundam thanks to Wing though. Almost everything that had been licensed up to that point had been shown on Toonami in some form. 0th MS Team. 0080, 0083, MSG, Seed. Sadly we never got to Zeta or Char's Counterattack which were quite epic. But yeah, salute to Gundam Wing. You may not have been a great series but you set the course in many ways for anime in America. DragonBall Z and Gundam Wing are certainly the kings in that regard. |

Nice article. I remember all of my friends watching Gundam back then, but I hated it. After toonami ended I gave it a chance and enjoyed most of it. Kind of wish I had watched it back in the day instead. |
