ToonamiFan has a guest editor today - John Mason.

He lays out five essential elements the 'reborn' Toonami block has to get right in order to succeed in the long-term. Check the article and chime in to let us know what you think:

"Just from this cover, I'm gonna take a shot in the dark here: Eiichiro Oda, right?"

Nope, Hiro Mashima. Art styles are very similar though. :P

Good article though it already seems a bit dated on the Midnight Run point, since this iteration Toonami basically is that. Definitely agreed on the point about new shows and not overdoing it on the old stuff. Sadly it seems like that's what people want. So many people were upset that this Toonami didn't have any of the old stuff that they liked as a kid. It's fine to have a little of that but the block needs to move on at some point otherwise it can never progress.

I'd love to see them expand the Toonami universe (in a good way, not the weird TOM 4 way). Sadly it might be a while before we see that happen. We now know that this Toonami is on a VERY low budget, and just watching it last night that was more apparent than ever. The presentation was very thin to say the least. Definitely not up to standard from Toonami's best years (not that I expected it to be). But if the block is successful then I can certainly see them bringing back the style we know and love from the old days. Hell, it we're really lucky maybe we'll even get a TIE! Or is that pushing it? lol

To answer his point about why comedies come before the action, it's because the comedies bring in much bigger ratings. AS airs comedies as a lead-in to the action in hopes of a fraction of that audience staying tuned in for the action.

Anyway, again, good article.

... i'm still not convinced that Eiichiro Oda & Hiro Mashima aren't exactly the same person, based of their style(s) alone. ;)

i think you made some good points in your article, but to be frank, i think most of it they are already more than conscious of.

The current mission:
i'm also fairly confident, that in the MO of toonami, they will move forward as they see most fitting in the pioneering toonami spirit, and not in what many of the fans might want (ie. the same old dead horse - taxidermied). Toonami spirit has never been about doing something old and maintaining the past, but consistently moving forward to something new and different. yeah they've held tight to some of their big guns, but you can't blame anyone for doing so, more likely to blame one for not.

and as "Zipper" said, this for all intensive purposes IS toonami midnight run. considering the timeslot and given the more mature/darker tone the new era is aptly going with (ie.Deadman Wonderlan) (suitable for both a late night time-slot, and a 'matured' youth hooked fanbase).

besides, there's no point in trying to keep up with the Jonzes. the 'nostalgia' brackets being pretty well regulated by the 'toon' channels now available through advanced TV services. Nicktoons, ToonDisney, DisneyXD, & particularly Boomerange(which is just classic CartoonNetwork) regularly have plenty of shows to bring back that feeling.

Bleach is doing a great job picking up from DBZ; its got a diverse cast, an ever-going plot, and suitably more mature content (even as a fan i can say DBZ's just too kiddy for a late night).

Shows?:
New and lesser known shows are of course a must, but honestly in this day and age, yer foolin' if you think anythings going to really be 'exclusive' anymore. most channels don't do much about new shows getting streamed online immediately after airing. unless you've got alot of dough & a month of vigilance, like the Olympics. (though i don't know the stats on how viewership compares between steaming, digital recording, and watching live, but i'm certain the foremost is gaining the most momentum. i still say 'quality' means alot, so digi-rec has been a welcome advancement)

and as far as getting new stuff that hasn't been licensed for a dub. to my understanding, nowadays most shows(that would be worth airing abroad) are being licensed for dubbs before they even get produced, in this way both parties benefit as it allows more profit early on, and cheaper costs than if you try to acquire a series after it's already gotten popular.

though, for nostalgia sake & mass appeasement, i think it wouldn't be a bad idea to typically have 1 or 2 older 'classics' running in a slot at any given period. Cowboy Bebop and even GitS-SAC could be viewed as already implementing this strategy.
as you suggested shows that hasn't been overplayed like Outlaw star, or Yu Yu Hakusho would be suitable reruns. but only if they make certain to COMPLETE series they never finished (like the later).
additionally, picking up where things left of with newer prods of past stuff would be great in both carrying on the nostalgia and bringing in new material. like you said with getting newer DBZ productions, and even carrying on series past series like Euerka Seven (which is undoubtedly why they're re-airing it now, its sequel series Astral Ocean just came out, which they've surely scheduled to air, unless they can't secure the rights.). same can be said for bringing on reboots, they already have Cashern Sins. much like they once had Astro Boy revival.
so, in short, it seems they're already implementing the aforementioned ideal ideas.

besides, i don't think i'm alone in thinking(/knowning), that "adult swim's" saturday& action blocks, have always just been toonami in sheeps clothing. and their shows fitting for any Toonami incarnation, despite the maturity levels with some).

The BIG uh-Oooh-ya.... paradox:
Now, if they could find a way to pick-up Big-O a second time, for one more last-final season. That would be of an arguably legendary status for a 'channel'/programming block. it's not an ever-going series like alot of anime, they only wanted 3 seasons to wrap it up. they had to wrap-up the 1st season abruptly. and had to again compromise the 2nd season ending to try to implement some sort of closure. they just needed one last one to finish up and finally give it the closure it deserves. i don't expect it to happen. but with all the money [as] wastes dumping out shit shows(which only due to moronic viewership, actually proves to be working for them from a profiteer marketing standpoint), they could pull out the stops and do a service to CartoonNetwork/anime fans longterm fanbase and once again do something in the name of entertainment and 'righteousness'. which would again go so well with the character of Toonami. (but yeah, i know i'm dreaming)

as far as showing it everynight/more time slots. thats a bad idea. I love toonami as much as any fan. but lets face it, too much candy and you're ganna get sick. with it's not working-age fanbase, you can't expect people to be able to keep up daily/nightly(like afterschool blocks). and trying to spread it out over a week, thins out all the material, and could be one of the reasons toonami seemed to loose steam after awhile. Once a week is just enough dosage to keep you wanting more, but readily satisfied, and Saturday is the ideal/traditional night to do it.

Lastly, where the hell's the damn Toonami watermark. Get rid of this [adult swim] labeling shit, and bring it back bitches! :ph43r:

Long Live Toonami! KING of Kings.

oh and on awhole-nother issue

Musically:
i say you can't talk about toonami and it's music without Joe Boyd Vigil. not sure what he's up to now. but i'd imagine he'd be up for some more freelance work for his most successful venture, though i'd think/hope he'd try to go with a harder/faster edge for the new-age tracks, and explore a little more outside his normal boundaries. more of a "space fights!/dangerous adventure galaxy!" Drumb&Bass then the "mechanized technological takeover/first ascension into space" ambient sound that the previous era had, given the newer 'mature' direction.

Again, trying to stay fresh, i don't think its a bad idea to bring in some new talent, but you gotta be discerning, and i wouldn't frown upon getting another relatively 'unknown', so it's music you've never heard before, which will in memory again link it directly to toonami, as JBVs music does. (had he been famous before, his music wouldn't be synonymous with Toonami, and for many wouldn't invoke the same eclectic nostalgia.
the only one who i think could really outdue JBV at his own game for Toonami would be Yokko Kanno, with her expansive blend of diversity and range. despite being a big player in japan, she could make music unique and specifically separated to Toonami, without her reputation preceding her. afterall making scores uniquely fitting for one show is a soundtrack composers main purpose. but honestly, i'm sure she's got bigger fish.

Though, i am rather interesting in this seemingly well cultivated listing you have for 'fitting' musicians to provide the new beats for toonami. If you really, truly think they would be that great to be the soundscape for toonami you should make some sort of "Toonami-esk" Soundtrack dream collection (you can think up a better title), and gather up all the tracks you think give the toonami feel, and upload somewhere them for all the toonami fans to enjoy as an expansion of the ever-lasting and ever-building toonami experience that the fanbase has been steadfastly keeping a glow. I'm sure everyone in the community would appreciate and enjoy it as much as the Deep Space Bass remix albums.

What do ya think Monsieur Mason?
