ZOMG CHINESE.

These were my thoughs when I booted this up. Hours and hours of googling, I ensure you. The dump is not my doing. And there are occasional graphical glitches, so it's a bad dump, too. It crashes OFTEN and a lot of text screws the whole screen up. Strangely it still has Smilesoft and other companies when the game starts. Oh, and graphics in the intro aren't messed up. I can't read kanji but I'm sure it's a chinese bootleg. What's important is that this seems to be the version the Pokmon Diamond bootlegers used. Why? It has the same font as Diamond has built-in, and it reads names from Diamond bootleg save fine (it still has the header same as original Telefang).

More screens:

This is all for now.

DISCUSS.

... Oh, the rom. I, erm, am sure that I can't link it here. What a bummer. I have lotsa IMs, through, so contact me as you wish.

I've seen that version before. That one is really weird. First of all, what's with the poorly drawn Pikachu? And I just love how often the the text gets garbled. It's like it tried to use Chinese characters, but it loads western characters instead. It's virtually unplayable. One thing I noticed is that this one CAN save, but that's about it. And it had some other glitch that the Engrish version didn't have.

The fact that this can save leads me to believe that this was a separate version, but then again, it has a similar title screen (at least the background color is similar, as well as the position of the "PRESS START" text), and it has that same really ugly font that I absolutely hate.

Hmmm.

One more thing, it seems to use the same font as other Pokmon bootlegs in Chinese. Here are a few examples:

Yeah... I'm sure the Diamond bootleg is based out of this. Or this is based out of the Diamond bootleg. But I don't think so: it has almost no glitches that Diamond has.

I've seen these videos before.

And you can't have "fonts" in chinese. Chinese is very sensitive to the way it's written. Any fancier font would make it unreadible at this small scale. You hardly have any fonts for kana.

What the... how far did you get?! Anyway, those garbled graphics in Furaura (sp?) Village are funny. And I can't even make out that fourth image! Is it the map?

And yeah, the only thing that this and Diamond have in common is the font. None of those glitches are in Diamond. So who knows? I think they were separate forks.

It's possible that they based the translation off of the Chinese version though, because some of the translations don't make sense. For example, "In severe illness!" In the Japanese version, it literally says "Critical!!" so I have no idea how they could mess THAT up. And there are LOTS of b/p mixups, for example Kuribute and Babaluna Lake. Of course there are dozens of others too And looking at this page here, it says that b and p get mixed up in Chinese. I've never seen that in Japanese, though.

Haha! I just booted up my typical savestate (it's pretty worn out, carried from Diamond, through patched Power into original Speed, and now THIS D: my poor savestate). Yes, the fourth image is the map. It seems that every kanji gets load into tiles. There's no limit, so if the text goes on, it starts overwritting the tileset. And so on. And yes, that's what I'm sure about. That the translation is based up from THIS.
You still can't name Shigeki or the Denjuu... Hm...

Anyone who knows chinese better then me wants to check this bootleg out?

T-Fanger is mentioned here. Please look if it's related with the mistranslation as T-Mildew.

What I find most interesting is the giant font, I wonder if there's any way to look at how they coded that in order to use a VWF on the patch? Also I've been trying to find this version for a while, it just looks hilariously buggy XP

Well the giant font is done in a pretty primitive way using tiles. Basicly, you have all the kanji listed in tiles like abcdefgh... etc. When it's printed to the screen, it pretty much uses the following diagram:
Posted Imageetc... yellow borders being one character.

That's useful for 8x8 blocks, but, erm, isn't usable nor possible for 4x8 ones.

....I know no chinese, but according to the internet, "霉菌" does indeed mean fungus/mold. >__> (!!)

I have seen some absolutely tiny kanji in japanese games, it can get pretty ridiculous. XD I guess there's more to mix up in chinese though, so they need the bigger font... *shrug*

Great. So that's it.

This better be legal. Download an IPS patch here and apply to a crean Telefang 1 Power rom, and tada - you have the bootleg.

Oh, secret denjuu don't crash the game. Also when you get phone number of a Denjuu, it actually asks you to name it - or not, but it goes like "keep number? yes/no", and then "chinese!! and two choices, not labeled through and do nothing...

Anyways, Kimbles, mind translating the title screen, too, please? I'd do it myself, but I dunno how to search chinese.

The title screen is just 'Pokemon' in Chinese (Pokemon has quite a number of Chinese names, the one on this title screen literally means 'pocket monsters').

I'm Chinese so yeah. I can roughly understand them (not all though since I have you know I get pretty low grades for that subject in school >_>)

Translation of the 3 intro screens:
'I heard that this tree...'
'...can continue walking until Denjuu (Electric Monster)...'
'...world, I don't know if it's real or...'

The '...' isn't poor Chinese or anything, it's just continued or continued from. Unlike the Pokemon Diamond/Jade bootlegs the Chinese used in this bootleg is...kinda normal. It's just my lousy Chinese to English translation makes it seem broken. xD

Screen with the tree and Shigeki:
'Finally got in contact with you'
Screen with Musa in it:
'Hahaha! It's not much...'
Screen with Shigeki talking to the green Punika thing:
'The water in the river is all gone'
Krypto's profile:
'Uses hard claws to enter battle...'
(Can't see the bottom line)
Teletel's profile:
'Discovered! No matter! No matter at all...'

Whoa, now, that's awesome! Thank you a lot! You should download the patch and tell us if you find out something interesting!

And, um, yeah, the Denjuu info pages are broken, but the bottom line is actually the last four characters garbled. So, no more info I guess.

EDIT: Posted Image haha got
EDIT2: Posted Image Please, is there any reference to Crypto (or Kuriputo) on this screen, or are there any nonsence/garbled phrases? Same Posted Image here please, this should be Oshe saying "Let's go!".

First screen: 'Got "Key".'

Second screen: '...strict" ate "profit"!' (The 'strict' could be part of one of the monsters' names, it makes much more sense that way; and the 'profit' part I'm not so sure of the meaning, but it could be an item)
The 'strict' is pronounced as yn (yan2), fyi.

Third screen: '...said* "Burn!" '
*The character used for 'said' is actually in Chinese an onomatopoeia for the buzzing sound made by bees (and possibly other sources too, but so far I've only seen it used for bees and planes).

Btw, I missed out something on the title screen. The text below the 'Pokemon' actually means 'Jade Version'.

Woah garm you're Chinese too? Which country you're from? XD

Oh, just to clarify, Chinese isn't written in kanji, that's the way Chinese characters are written, no hiragana or any kana. There are tons of characters (same as Jap kanji) so there's no way they could fit all the characters in the place where the alphabet tiles were supposed to be. Seems like they took up the space where other tiles were supposed to be.

Well here's what the last 3 screenshots say:

GOT 鑰匙 - GOT key (well yeah)
嚴 飲 益益上 - I have no idea what the heck this is.. but if you read it character by character you get: 'strict" drink "benefit benefit up"' >_>
嗡 烙 - Not sure, but it means he's buzzing (in speech) either "lao!" or "luo!" (two pronunciations)

I think one bootleg is really is based off the other.. English based on this Chinese one?

The item shown (the name is a bit split) is Mobile. When I translated mobile to Chinese it gave 移動 surprisingly (it means to move). Then when translated back to English, it gave move (not surprisingly). So perhaps the mistranslation was cos it was based off a mistranslation!

The currency is "ball" in Chinese, which shows they could have been closely related.

And about the three choices at battle screen: the bottom one, supposed to be Status, can be translated to Chinese as 身份, 地位, or as with the screenshot, 位置 (quite far off actually). This, when translated back into English, can mean either a position physically or a position in an organisation. Which brings about the bootleg "Position".

However I can't explain why Toronko Village is called 糟戰. It means "terrible war" or something >_>

It is highly possible that the English bootleg was based off this Chinese bootleg. Or restarted from scratch, importing some things from this Chinese bootleg, which may have brought about those glitches. Maybe it's even the same bootleggers who made these two bootlegs though. Well they were Chinese, when they translate it's most likely from their native language.

EDIT: Well I took a really long time making this post that garm beat me to the 3 screenshot translations....

Well I pretty much figured out the glitches, it was caused by ME CORRUPTING THE MEMORY DD:. There's minimum graphical glitches now. Also, only the used characters are loaded into memory, whenever a new text box appears, they are overwritten.

GOT 耳 - GOT key (well yeah)

Okay, so it seems that both Denjuu names and the phrases are broken. I guess that when they were translating the game to english, they used this version, and when translating the broken things (Denjuu names and phrases), they used the original, Japanese version, and not knowing katakana, they ended up messing the names. Yay for clarification!

I'm from Singapore. :D

I don't think it's really scrambled, it could be a continuation of the previous part of the sentence, especially seeing how big the Chinese characters are. In fact, if you can put it together with a fitting first part of the sentence, it'll actually make enough sense to understand.

I didn't download that patch, but I downloaded a Chinese version off *some site* which has the same opening screen so I assume it's the same anyway. :P
And you're right, according to that site it is Power version. But doesn't change the fact the title screen states Jade xD

I've looked through the beginning (too lazy to translate it, but it should be quite similar to the Japanese one). No scrambled words yet, and the Chinese is rather good (at least not of the English bootleg standard).

Shigeki is called 小雨/xiǎo yǔ (xiao3 yu3). Literally means 'little rain' (I have no idea where the rain comes from, but in Chinese it's quite common for fictional characters to have '小/little' in front of their names)
Glasses guy (can't remember name) is called '松吉/sōng j (song1 ji2). Literally means 'loose good' (if it means something stupid like this it's almost always a transliteration of the original name).
The D-Shot is the 'D發射/D fā sh (D fa1 she4). Literally means 'D shoot'.
Crypto's name is 可利/kě l (ke3 li4). Or hNut. xD

On checking, the game seems to refer to Oshe as 嗡/wēng (weng1) in battle. Out of battle it's e-lx.

After you get a denjuu's number, it'll say '很好', which is Chinese for 'Very good'. I seem to recall that being in the English bootleg. MOAR EVIDENCE

Toronko isn't named '糟戰', it's just in some sort of war. xD In the game Toronko is referred to as 圖倫克/t ln k (tu2 lun2 ke4). (origin of 'Tulunk Village'?)

I'll find out more tomorrow. I'm staying up way past bedtime |P

I'm not sure, but I think it's not a continuation, that it came in a brand new message box (lol).

I'm willing to bet that the pirates who did the Japanese->Chinese translation were different ones then the ones after the Chinese->English one. I'm basing this on the fact that they didn't seem to read katakana propperly when translating the names.

Just a few more things I noted:
Kochia is 歐些/ōu xiē (ou1 xie1). Sounds like a more appropriate name for Oshe, really!
When Oshe arrives, he says 'single/個'. (It's kinda weird to translate it alone)
In battle, Krypto is called '棘/j (ji2)'. Literally means 'thorns (on plants)'. if I'm not wrong :P
When a denjuu is hurt by an attack, it'll say (literally) '-- points are lost!'.

I tried a battle (I'm not too familiar with the Telefang battle system, to be honest', after Kochia attacked the enemy Oshe, the text said 'the opponent who is considered more stupid, the injury is decreased!' (I know my translation sucks! D: But it means something like that)

After winning, it'll say 'Caught the enemy's denjuu!' (it was a wild Oshe).

Open for intepretation.

Maybe they messed up the list, e.g. that every name is shifted by one.

Should be "I'm here!". "Arrived" in Diamond.

Heeeey! Bootleg Diamond: 'for the clever/??? opponent, injure increase/decrease!'. Basicly means 'super effective' or 'not very effective'.
Quote:

After winning, it'll say 'Caught the enemy's denjuu!' (it was a wild Oshe).
It says the EXACT SAME thing in Diamond!

I still have no idea how to wikifize this.

EDIT: I hate IE.
EDIT2: When a savestate from this bootleg is put into normal Telefang 1, all your denjuu have normal names. So it seems they even didn't bother translating them. The reason for Crypto ending up hNut is because a wrong charset is loaded. I guess that it's the same cause as him being "j".
EDIT3: Well that's not entirely true. Crypto seems to be named different, ending up being nicknamed Shihimonohone. In hiragana.
EDIT4: Okay, both hiragana and katakana names are loaded up with the same font in this bootleg, and that is the english D/J one. Starting with AIU=ABC.
EDIT5: Seems like we're still missing one bootleg version, but from what I read, it's the same as what I have here.

Who knows, maybe there are other Chinese Jades out there. But yeah, these two are from Power.
Kochia's dex desc: Uses teeth to bite through anything. (用牙咬斷任何東西)
Oshe's desc: Curls up its body to reduce injury. (蜷起身體减輕損傷)
And more, but thwy more or less mean the same as the English counterparts. I'll give those that I've found if you want them, though.

The 'P-card' is called an Electric Card (電卡).

Kesi is called '劃/hu' in battle. Literally means 'to split'.
Monstera is called '疼没歴/tng mi l' in battle. Literally means 'pain not/drown history'. (You know some words have two meanings, 没 can either mean something like 'not', or drown)
Myrtus is called '歡厲/huān l'. Literally means 'happiness whetstone'.

The bespectacled badguy at the start of the game talks about making life better for Denjuu (or something) and curry. As usual.

When a T-Fanger enters battle with you, it'll say '-- starts to compete!'.
Apparently the cat guy's name is '歩藻/b zǎo'. Literally means 'step algae'.

Double check and yes, a T-Fanger is referred to as a 'T霉菌/T mi jn'. Literally 'T mold/mildew germ'. So that's probably where 'T mildew' came from.
As for why the Chinese translation is like that, it *could* be that 'Fanger' sounds very similar to 'Fungus' in Japanese. (just a guess)

Netaro is referred to as '内塔/ni tǎ'.
Nejiro is referred to as '内吉/ni j'.
However in battle, it's a completely different name. I'll take note of it next time, bah.

I looked into the ROM a bit and yes, the Denjuu names IN BATTLE are gibberish. Actually, they are still japanese. Just loading the new characters.

When reffering to a Denjuu in a dialog, the names seem to be OK, e.g. translated.
