Sources and generations

Sources, and generations, are the most crucial information for any bootleg information. Below is an standartd FAQ of questions relating to sources and generations.

What are the abbreviations for sources?
For audio, both live shows and sessions, the following abbreviations are used for sources:

  • AUD: AUD, short for audience, is basically a recording of the show recorded by an attendee in the audience. Around 80% of Hole shows are audience-sourced.

  • SBD: SBD, short for soundboard, is a professional recording from a live show or studio session. It's recorded straight from the mixing desk and only a short percentage of shows are soundboard-sourced, as soundboard recordings are hard to surface, usually because they were recorded for TV and radio.

For video, the following abbreviations are used for sources:
  • AMT: AMT, short for amateur, is a non-professional video recording from the show, usually recorded by an attendee in the audience. These are almost always use a one camera positions and always if not always, fairly bad quality, unless in some situations when AMT videos can be fairly good quality.

  • PRO: PRO, short for professional, is a professional video recording from the show. These are, most times, a multi-camERA mix, ranging from different places within the show. These are mostly shot by TV companies and are most times, broadcast on television.

How will I know what source my upload is?
Defining your source should be a fairly easy task.

In the case of audio shows, if the recording is either muffled, far or pretty bad quality, it is most likely an AUD source. If the recording is clear, with little crowd noise, and sounds well-mixed almost like a studio recording, it is probably an SBD recording.

In the case of video shows, it is very simple to determine if a show is an AMT or PRO shot. AMT shots, will 99% of the time, have one position and no multicam mix. It will look pretty much like this:

Also, most AMT shots will have open mic audio, instead of SBD audio.

PRO shots, will most likely, be in various positions and have a multicam mix. These have better audio and also better quality, and will look pretty much like this:

What's with the numbers after the sources?

In all cases, you will see a number beside the source (for example, AUD#1 or PRO#2).

These determine a more accurate source, as there could of been more than one person/TV company/soundboard taping the show. For example, say you were taping a show, and your friend was also. If both surface, one will be identified as AUD#1 and the other AUD#2.

And what is with the letters, sometimes after the numbers?
Within the Hole community, in rare cases, there will be a letter after the source numbers. (For example, AUD#1a or PRO#2b). These are to determine the surfaced material of each identical source.

For example, say you taped a show and three songs from your tape surfaced, let us say "Violet","Miss World" and "Awful." This would be defined as AUD#1a. Then, sometime in the future, perhaps more songs would surfaced, let us say "Heaven Tonight" and "Pretty on the Inside", these would be definied as AUD#1b. Then, if your entire show surfaces, they all become AUD#1.

Is there any more I need to know about sources?
When trading, either online or offline, it is essential to always include source information. Sources can be found at Holelive, and also, each audio/video show uploaded here will have source information, if you have checked Holelive and are still not sure of your source, contact an admin or a moderator, and see if they can help resolve your problem. :)
