This is the thread for all things related to Sonic Mania. This is an upcoming game by SEGA. It'll be released late into the summer of 2017. Discuss!

Woo, oh man. Nothing here yet. Well, as far as what I currently think of the game, I'm a bit disappointed in the ratio of old to new stages; I've seen all the returning ones way too many times before, so I would've appreciated a little more creativity. But, that much probably has to do with marketability and Sonic Team/Iizuka's involvement. Hopefully we can make the end-of-summer release date that it's currently striving for.

^Yeah I agree wholeheartedly. At PAX East, I got a chance to play both demo stages, Green Hill Zone and Studiopolis. Green Hill was alright, I liked some of the new additions, but Studiopolis was just a ton of fun. So much more creativity in the newer stage, it's not even close.

I'm disappointed in the lack of a port for this for Android. The platform hasn't seen a premium Sonic game in a huge while other than the utterly disastrous All Stars Racing Transformed which is now free with an IAP infestation, and Sonic & SEGA All Stars Racing which handles...weirdly. That's the last we've seen of premium Sonic games on Android, and I think Mania is an opportunity to add more premium stuff there, but I guess SEGA's missing out on the chance.

There's no mobile port in general; I think that may have more to do with the chosen price point than anything else at the moment. They're selling it for $20, which likely wouldn't fly on Google Play or the App Store.

There are apps that have barely any content and yet do go for hundreds of dollars, and I've seen them personally. Some of them went for free (something that doesn't make any sense) and they can be usually a scrolling interface with a couple of pics.

Then there's the typical Final Fantasy game, of which the cheapest ones are $8 (FFI and FFII), the rest are $16, and FFIX is $21. If they sell it for the full $20 there, Google Play itself wouldn't complain, only the people seeing a higher price tag than usual. Can't talk about the App Store though.

I was going to say it might have something to do with those programming the game, but Christian Whitehead has a history of mobile ports. Hmm...this leads me to believe in the future there could be a port of Sonic Mania to mobile. I don't see it out of the realm of possibility.

And that's where it strikes me as weird. It's a perfect opportunity for SEGA to drop a new premium Sonic game to Android and reap the benefits. They have the skillset to do so. So why not?

It's true that overpriced applications exist on the market, but they're not likely to shift a game like Sonic Mania in high enough volumes to warrant the effort on that platform if the same price point remains the same. Those who purchase the Final Fantasy games at a full $20 are a niche target indeed. I do believe that the game could perform and play well on the platform, but with similar titles (Sonic 1/2/CD) sitting at five dollars or less, you'd need to make quite the compelling argument that Mania is worth four times as much. This is especially given the stiff competition from other products within the same ecosystem, and the fact that Mania itself is more old than new with a 60:40 slant in favor of classic stages.

As it currently stands, I understand why Mania doesn't exist on mobile; I doubt that it will for quite some time.

OK this may be the wrong place for this but I am not shore where it should go
and I am so MAD right now!

I had pre ordered sonic mania on steam and we all know how that ended.
So yesterday I go out to buy a Nintendo eshop card for switch. Mania is $20.00 so I buy a $20.00 card. I go home and wait until midnight. But the game does not show up.
I give up and go to bed. The next day I find sonic mania on the eshop. I have my $20.00 in the eshop I try to buy mania and I get insufficient funds. It wants $1.34 extra. For taxes!
But I only have a $20.00 card. How could I have known that? I've never used the Nintendo eShop before. On steam and PSN the taxe is included in the posted price.
Now I have to go out and buy another $10.00 card just so I can have $1.34 for a $20.00 game!!

When people say that digital distribution is easier, it makes me want to hit them with something like, AMYS HAMMER!!!!!!
