I was just wondering what people thought of the British monarchy and why the like/do not like it. I personally love the charm it brings to the country and its traditional value. Also I have great respect for all the problems it has pulled the country through in the past. Also the ceremonies are breath taking and beautiful i.e the Coronation, Silver Jubilee (25 years reign), Golden Jubilee(50 years reign) and diamond Jubilee (60 years reigng which only Queen Victoria (1818-1837-1901) so far managed to live for). The monarch doesn't have power, though. So... it's no big deal |

while its true that the monarch has not that much power, they can still appoint a Prime Minister, fire a Prime Minister and dissolve Parliament. But thats it unless you count ceremonial power i.e. Knighting people |

I wouldn't know, since that never happens. I'd have to see if she used the power in a good way or not |

I actually doesn`t care to much because that is another place, but i think the Monarchy should stay, but that is just me. So my vote goes to that, but realy it isn`t anything special that i care about. |

It depends on how the government set up but Britain has been ran by monarchs for the longest time and I doubt their going to stop having a king/queen any time soon despite the Prime Minister is pretty much in control. The only down side is some do try to rule with an iron fist if they make all the decisions. But I am sure the queen making all the decisions would be far better than Tony Blair, though. |

England did once rule without a monarch when civil war broke out in 1642-1649 when Parliament got so fed up with Charles I (1600-1625-1649) ruling without parliament that they waged war against him (this meant the first ever fully trained army). The King let his ego get the better of him and laughed at the idea of him being executed and said "me? the King being executed? I can't be executed for treason if I am King!" After that the King was executed and England was ruled by a commonwealth until England realised that they could not rule the country without a figurehead (prime ministers were not around then and were not invented until 1714). Oliver Cromwell became "Lord Protector", he was the one who lead the army against the King. Ironically the Lord Protector had even more power than a King! The Lord Protector was coronated as a King aswell except he wore no crown as the crown jewels were siezed and destroyed. in 1658 Cromwell died and his son Richard (1626-1712)was elected as the next Lord Protector he lasted for only months before he abdicated and went into voluntery exile in 1659. The commonwealth was restored for a short while and lasted from 1659-1660. The monarchy was then restored under King Charles II. Thats how come the monarchy now have limited power. We tried to rule without one and failed and so I agree with Kilo the monarchy will last centuries after we die. wonder what it will be like when HRH Charles, Prince of Wales becomes King Charles III? Englands been a Queen's country for a long time it will be wierd with a King. I hope the Queen reaches a diamond jubilee (60 years rule) and breaks Queen Victoria's record for the longest reign (62). What do you guys think? |

The Queen has a lot of power, she owns all the land in Great Britain and in the British Empire. No law is passed unless she approves of it, but with everything said she accepts all laws because of the benefits new laws give, like July 1st smoking ban, great benefit there right? I agree with monarchy, I mean where would we be with out Richard the Lionheart, and John (Richards backstabbing brother who improved the navy which kept us in full prime for century's to come) Including now where are navy is still one of the best. |
