Smoking Ban

Meh, I needed to start a new topic about something.

Recently, the UK joined most of the US in banning smoking in public places. People can no longer smoke anywhere in public, only at home. Do you agree with this?
On the face, it looks like a good thing, since there is no longer smoke hanging in the air of restaurants or public places. However, smoking has been banned in places like bars, where people go to relax and smoking is common. Since it has been banned, bars have been run out of business and people no longer have places to smoke. The ban takes away the freedom of a person to smoke.

I'm not sure what to think of it. I like it being gone from restaurants and stuff, but it seems a bit extreme where even little smoking rooms aren't allowed. It's similar to taking away ones right to wear certain things in public, or maybe holding hands/affection in public. It's just like taking away ANY freedom. Despite that smoking can be annoying, that doesn't justify taking away a freedom.

Its the danger of second hand smoke that everyone is concerned about, and alchaholics who also visit these bars that people once smoked in may not be smokers, but they would still have to suffer the same consequences. Maybe the bar should have smoking areas? The ban should be tweaked and reconsidered a bit, I agree..

I do think, however, that there should be smoking areas in some parts of places like that, so long as non-smokers arnt effected. Just segreate the smokers from the non-smokers and everything would be fine..

Whole separate rooms for them would help so smoke doesn't get to non-smokers. It would be a lot more fair that way...

I hate smoking, it over time will kill you and no one seems to care what it can do to harm the functions of your body

The Smoking ban is a good thing because quite a lot of people hate it and it's better for people's health if second hand smoke isn't lofting around everywhere they go

You have to take into consideration that smoke does drift, if the door is even slightly ajar then smoke gets out. You also have to remember that smoking does nothing but get you addicted and then die of lung cancer or some painful type of death. It's protecting children also, in the way that kids won't be walking around seeing people wit a cigar or cigarette and thinking, That's so awesome!!!

There are endless pros that come out of this, and it's a takeaway of freedom... If you haven't noticed, America has started to do that to people... It's not taking away freedom though, they still have freedom, it's just restricting it to a bare minimum, I know you're going to say "but still..." just think about it this way... It's like limiting your hours on a computer, or limiting something harmful. Too much of something isn't always good, not only is it unpleasant for people to be around, it's a bad role model. I'm not sure what to say about bars... except that the main function of a bar as your said is to relax, drinking is the main thing at a bar... not smoking...

But children shouldn't be in a bar, so why can't smoking be allowed in them? People go to bars to smoke AND drink, which is obvious by the lack of business nowadays.
People are forced to do it at home and it's a real annoyance for them if they go on vacation or work all day.

Why can't they have special places away from the rest of the people for it? Like in a zoo or amusement park there can be a place away from the activity for it.

I think it is a good thing that they are banning somking in public places, I despise smoking! But, I also know that it is a big deal for some people, and they should be allowed to smoke in bars if anything. To quote Eddie Izzard: "Yes, they have banned smoking in bars. Pretty soon you won't be able to drink or talk in them either!" xD

I am very for banning smoking. Its horrible for your heath and the others your smoking around, it smells AWFUL and stays in your cloths and sometimes you hair, it pollutes the air, etc. Smoking is a nasty habit and it's something that needs to go away.

Ohio, the state I live next to (10 miles away from), banned smoking statewide and I'm hoping the state I live in does the same. Atleast some restaurants around here already are smoke-free.

Drinking is another issue entirely. It should be illegal to drink without a designated driver in my opinion but otherwise, I don't see the harm in people drinking if they have someone to take them home so their not endangering lives by driving drunk. Though drinking in excess or being a alcoholic is a major problem and people shouldn't go to that level. Personally, I don't understand drinking or putting anything in your body that messes with your brain (with both smoking and drinking do).

Smoking actually takes away freewill in two different ways..

1. you become too addicted and it's nigh impossible to quit

2. anyone you are around is forced to second hand smoke which takes away their will...so you are involuntarily destroying non-smokers lungs...

Close you eyes, take a deep breath, and the ask yourself on simple question, "Is where I am where I should be?"

I pick myself up from the fall to be knocked back down, though I know one day when I get back up there will be nothing left to knock me down. The question is simply this, "Will there be anything left of me?"

Leave me the reins and I'll steer myself to infinty, I've sold my soul to darker side of divinty. I've prayed with the wicked and danced with the damned, but in the end it's all in your hand. Tell me how you lead the lamb astray, searching for somethign in the shadow of the day. I sang, I danced, and laughed, and played. Broken and beaten as my spirit would fade. take my gun, take my knife, but please if you could only just spare me my life? I wasted my time and mispronounced the line, you sold away my soul on the edge of a dime. <-------( random ryhming I just made up of the top of my head. )

Father touched you with the hand of god. He's gripping tighter saying, "You will burn in hell they say, you will burn in hell!"

People who start smoking as adults rarely get addicted. Teens are the ones who get addicted easily, and they're not legal to smoke. Many adults use smoking to relieve stress and not being able to do it when not at home may cause anxiety and problems.
I don't see why bars can't let people smoke. Most people like to smoke while drinking and it's a completely secluded, adult place...

It just seems a bit unfair to me. It's like saying you're not allowed to fart in public, which is similar.

smoking is alittle different...maybe adults dun get that addicted..it still kills you, and it still kills ppl around you...and yea bars are secluded but not everyone in them smokes, but they might as well with all the second hand smoke...

But the majority do smoke, as evident by people not going to bars anymore. So now bars are just going to go out of business and now neither smokers nor nonsmokers can go anywhere to drink

Like all drinkers are drunk drivers. You generalize and assume people do that often, when many do now. Alcohol is a much better stress relieve than smoking. Though it's not the best, at least if you drink it moderately nothing bad happens to you and it can be helpful.
Bars are places for friends to get together and adults to get away from work a little bit

Smoking is a horrible habit. Not only to the person doing the actual smoking, but EVERYONE around them. It is the most horrible smell in the world, and is just plain wrong. Not only that, but it pollutes the earth. There is no pro to smoking what so ever. Every aspect of it is bad, so banning it can only be a good thing as far as I am concerned.

I don't think it is taking away a freedom, because it's a freedom they should not have to begin with. It kills the smoker, and the people around the smoker. Allowing it is like telling people they can go out and kill anyone they want. If you're going to smoke, you might as well just go and shoot them in the head, at least that would be a quick death.
