Over the past few years, Sony has been leading the way in a new style of family friendly game, and giving gamers a way to be creative with LittleBigPlanet. Now Sony has taken the game series to a new level, full 3D. LittleBigPlanet Karting is made by San Diego Studio and United Front games, the same devs of ModNation Racers. I had the huge opportunity to get an early look at the game and I can say that LBP Karting is a great edition to the series even in it's early form. The small number of story levels I had access to showed how well the original game format translates to karting. Elements from both games are there, from a track based on the first world in LBP1, to one based on Avalonia in LBP2. they even got great remixes of LBP music! A unique aspect is the score bubbles that add to yoir scorecwhen you collect them. You can choose how to have the controls configured, either X or R2 for gas and the drift taking the other button. Like many Kart games, the longer you drift, the bigger speed boost you get. There are also items on the track that you can use, which is no surprise for a kart game. From the typical rockets that hit anyone nearby, as well as traps. One item class though is unique, where it is solely used for defense and you trigger it at the right moment, indicated by a shield behind your kart. As you expect, there are also traps and jumps and other surprises on the track. Some tracks require you to press a button in mid air to use a grapple. LBP would not be LBP without community, I played a few online levels published by other testers and they can really extend the game play experience. In create mode, making a track is very simple and works just like ModNation. you hold down R2 to move a paint roller forward, the left stick to steer and the right stick to make hills. You do have limited space and pair to work with but you can get very creative on the track design within the themes avaliable. They even have a auto complete when you quickly want to get to complete the loop. The game builds your track then from there it's up to you to decorate, make items, set up track traps, surprises and item locations. Most of LBPs tools are avaliable, and building stuff is just like LBP but in 3D. You have to get used to the differences in controls but the possibilities are endless. A few new tools were added, like one that moves an item on a path you draw, to a hinge to open and close items to speific angles. Race speific tools like alternate paths and and main path fork flags are also avaliable. you can even make your own items for the racers to pick up for your track, LBPs programming tools are there are well, and you can even customize the UI of the race data on screen. If there was one gripe I have, it's that the tutorials are all videos and no hands on, hopefully this will be addressed before launch. I'm not much of a creator but more of a racer. Multiplayer online is a bit unstable right now but is done in a great way. When you want to race with others, you are auto joined to a group and get to watch the race in that group before yours. Once that race is done, you get a minute to practice before your race starts. Once the race is done, you get a score based on your placement and how many score bubbles you got, you also score when you successfully cause a player to spin out or go off track, but you also lose points if your on the other end. Overall this beta was a great chance for me to see the game in progress and give them my feedback. It's a great start and I look forward to the final release this Christmas.
