Featuring an on-board radar, video cameras for monitoring the road and surroundings, this car was demonstrated in a video clip released a week ahead of the Las Vegas Consumer Electronics Show. It promises to eliminate the chances of crashes.

You know, the question was always "what would technology be like in 10 years?", but with this and LG's OLED TVs, I want to ask TTFF, "what do you think technology will be like in 5 years?"

Almost makes me wanna call 'misguided innovation'. If we're gonna lose a skill, we better be doing something important with the time we'll save!
A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.

It's more for the novelty of a self driving car. I mean, what you said then is reminiscent of arguments when automobiles came out.
"Oh we'll lose the skill of horse riding and training etc"
We must make way for the new :)

Google has had self driving cars for a couple years now and I'm definitely behind the idea of self driving cars. If anyone is afraid of safety, the car Google used was test driven in many places throughout the USA for 2 years and only experienced one accident, in which a person rear ended the car at their own fault. It will take possibly another decade before something like this becomes more common place in a home, but when it does, expect accident numbers to HEAVILY drop off.

On the other side of the coin, a lot of jobs would be going out as well. We can't forget school bus drivers, truck delivers, and so forth. That's a lot of jobs to be put to waste, but you could probably make that argument years ago when machines took over the assembly line. XD

There were many more sewwers, constructors, writers, archivists and other occupations lost after the technology boom, than will be lost by mass transit and transport jobs due to this new innovation.

I think if the self-driving car was a success, there would be less car accidents, fake drivers and overall a much better transport experience.

I wonder if other car companies will make self-driving cars. It'd be cool if Lamborghini made a self-driving car.

You know what I thought of first when I read about a self-driving car? Someone can be asleep at the wheel while the car drives itself. This kind of car should have been available in 2001. 2001 was supposed to be the future.

We are in the 21st century, the 21st century is the future. :P

I hope they don't make all cars self driving and knock off the ability to drive. One of my dreams is to drive an actual car and I don't want it ruined by the future!

I, for one, am not too thrilled about the idea.

You just...lose something by not being able to drive something yourself. If a car had it optional, I think that'd be cool, but these things never are.

I am entirely against being forced to do something/being controlled by an entity directly. I'd prefer less automation in this case, definitely.

And going back to San's earlier remark, yes, we should all ride horses. It grants style and is a blast if you know what you're doing. In addition to casual style, you can also be epic if you are skilled, can you imagine the YouTube videos if everyone rode a horse regularly?

Why horses? Horses are expensive, and since they are animals, you have to take good care with them. Unlike cars, which you can park for days I'm guessing.

Yes, indeed. Horses are awesome. It would be interesting to go back in time to see horses transporting people instead of cars.

Weren't the British doing that in the past? But either way, self-driving cars will also do accidents. It doesn't matter whether it's human controlled or self driving.

At first, there will be accidents. When they get the technical stuff down pat, I'm sure the accidents will be not that common. Accidents may not occur 99.9% of the time when they get it right. My guess they'll have it done perfectly by the 2100s. I am going to try my hardest to live to the 2100s. Cars will be in the sky and they'll be self-driven. It would be quite remarkable.

We shouldn't jump that technoligically in thinking... Nobody told us to live lke the Jetsons lol. What if said flying car was hit by a rock, or ran out of fuel mid air, or got something broken mid air as well?

I myself don't want to see an age when Jetsons become a reality.
