Who is Pooka?

I'll copy paste this from somewhere I also posted on.

Guess who downloaded Ubuntu... It is me, Pooka who did so! Now I'm not sure whether I should keep it on my flash drive or something. Could a Linux guy help?

First off... Its WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY slower than my Windows 7 is. I know I'm running it off a flash drive and not one of my partitions (don't wanna waste a third on another OS), but I got Porteus earlier and it was speedy and all. The only problem I had with Porteus is that I can't install .deb files at all, such as the newly released Steam for Linux. According to Windows 7, my flashdrive is something around 7.2GBs approx (its an 8GB flash drive), and I have 6GBs left now.

I installed it by following the instructions on their site to create a bootable USB disk from Windows, and still got the try or install window. Do I install from Ubuntu itself? Will it hurt my Windows partitions (XP and 7)?

Also, I wish to install the .deb files outside of the flash drive, like my games partition so I put a Linux TF2 and get the Tuxedo in-game (the reason I'm rushing to Linux now).

But once again, I want Ubuntu to boot FROM THE FLASH DRIVE, not from the HDD I have or whatever, yet retain full speed. I don't care whether I'll need Windows for the job as well.

Show me the way, Macintosh community!

Could somebody tell me of a good (and portable) Linux OS that is based on Debian? Until now...

-Started with Porteus. Gave up on the first try.
-Ubuntu's turn. Turns out its the slowest and the hardest to install Linux system ever. Despite having a cool desktop just like Windows 7/Mac.
-DSL came to play. Ahem, I did something wrong.
-Puppy Linux - Slacko Linux. Managed to install steam_latest.deb at last! Only to find a flash of a white box every time I try to open it.
-The stop I'm at, Slax. Learnt how to convert a deb file to an sb file. Tried to run it off the konsole, only to get me "Cannot run as root user". Made a new user and managed to run Steam, only to meet the dreaded "Fatal error: Steam needs to be online to update. Please confirm your internet connection and try again". I swear I'm editing this part from Slax right now!

Now I'm CONFUSED! I can't get a nice, portable Linux, that can run Steam, which is built on Debian binaries. Anything to finish this off? I want to run Steam on any small Linux system!

Why would want to use Ubuntu on a flash drive. Thats WAY slower than using a HDD or a SSD (which I have)
Also if you have a quad core 3.4 ghz processor running windows 7 64 bit on a SSD, well I can say its pretty fast. Also there are still plenty of games that are not compatible with linux yet, and some may never will. I know your entitled to your opinion but I'm staying with Windows for now. :)

Pony up, Tails fans!

All that Pooka wants is the Tux Tuxedo in TF2 from downloading Steam on Linux. So he doesn't want a dedicated SSD drive to do it, just a USB to use it once.

My presence here isn't that common, but I still consider Tails to be one of my favourite video game characters. Somewhere between the Undertale cast and TF2's cast.
PM me and I'll get back to you with up-to-date contact details if you're into playing some TF2, Splatoon 2, Civ 5, Terraria, Minecraft, Puyo Puyo Tetris, or many other PC / Wii U / Switch games.

My lil reward for being nice or something.

Exactly the point. I have downloaded Slux as it is a portable Linux it seems, and it seems pretty fast. But I want TF2. Problem is, that Steam client always bring up a fatal error. I guess that from this point on, its Valve's problem who doesn't seem to really care for their platforms right.

Well Linux does have multiple builds by the community. That's the point of it. So not all encodings will work correctly with Steam I'm afraid.

I joined the Steam Linux Beta group and they were kind enough to redirect me to an already converted steam.sb module. Seems to get rid of my dreaded fatal error problem as I got the ability to download 10MBs, unlike with the deb module converted to a sb module which always failed at 2MBs.

I'd change the thread to "[SOLVED]" if I manage to install Steam, then Team Fortress 2, and run the game, thus getting my Tuxedo. I'm almost doing it!

By the way, is Slax brighter than Windows? Looking at my usual Vicky avatar from Slax gives me the feeling that it is not usual anymore, because it feels bright(er).

Also, do I need to install drivers for the graphics card and CPU, or its not needed? I need to know this.
