Sony Announces Playstation 4

"I wanna fly high!"

Next Gen gaming has arrived, in preview form.

Sony today showed a preview of Playstation 4. While we did not get to see very many games or an actual console, what was shown is a testament to how far the gaming industry has come since the beginning of the current gen of gaming over 6 years ago.

The system itself will be a PC like arch, with a x86 processor, a top of the line desktop graphics system, extra large hard drive, and 8GB of RAM. While this makes for very powerful specs for life like and Pixar level graphics in REAL TIME. Several tech demos were shown, including Unreal Engine 4, a updated Havok Physics engine computing on the GPU, as well as even showing real emotion in an elderly mans face. This does mean the system will not have native backwards compatibility with older games, but BC will be coming in the form of a cloud service that Sony is working on that will stream games to your console, ala OnLive. The system will also be able to suspend/resume games between play sessions, and digital games will be playable within minutes of the start of download, not hours, as games can start playing while partly downloaded. Full specs:

-Single-chip custom processor, with eight x86-64 AMD Jaguar CPU cores and 1.84 TFLOPS next-gen AMD Radeon based graphics engine
-8GB GDDR5 memory
-Built-in hard drive
-6x Blu-Ray and 8x DVD drive
-USB 3.0 and auxiliary ports
-Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 2.1
-HDMI, analog AV-out, and optical S/PDIF audio output
-DualShock 4 controller, with two-point capacitive touchpad, three-axis gyroscope, three-axis accelerometer, vibration, light bar with three color LEDs, mono speaker, micro USB port, stereo headset port, extension port, 1000mAh battery
-PlayStation 4 Eye camera, with two 1280 x 800 cameras, f/2.0 fixed focus lenses, 85-degree field of view, 30cm minimum focusing distance, four-channel microphone array

The controller is a upgraded version of the Dualshock. http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/02/live0391-1361402781.jpg It has low latency compared to Dualshock 3, better rumble, a touch pad on the top middle, a light bar on the top, and a dedicated share button. The controller will have motion detection as well, assisted by a new 3D camera. The Playstation move will also be supported, with Media Molcule currently making a game that allows you to make 3D objects with the move and to some puppetry with characters. You can also have Wii U like gameplay, with local remote play ANYWHERE IN THE HOME using PS Vita. Android and iOS Mobile devices will also get a compainion app, ala Xbox Smartscreen.

The Share button will allow you to share screenshots, short clip videos, and even broadcast the game to your friends live via PSN, Facebook and USTREAM. You can even let an experienced player on your friends list take over the game your playing and help you though a tough spot. They are also going to let game devs add interesting features for this cloud service. The home screen of the console itself will feature a feed of content from friends and game devs, and the PS Store will allow you to try a game via the cloud streaming.

With the cloud technology comes a price, you will now be required to have your real name visible to friends added to your PSN, as well as consent to tracking of your gaming activity. This tracking will allow the console to predict what games you may buy and predownload them before you buy them.

All the main studios and some indies are on board. Games shown included Killzone 4, Infamous Second Son, a family game named Knack, a game from Capcom, Watch Dogs, The Witness, and the announcements of Dliablo III (yes, a PC game coming to consoles), and a new Final Fantasy. No games shown from SEGA but they are making PS4 games, as is SEGA partners Sumo Digital and...... Dimps :T2:

The console will release this Chirstmas/Holiday season, no price was announced.

Predownload games? My parents usually complain about slow speeds because of a download running. Now the PS4 invents predownloading games. Woah! I certainly hope it is not forced upon me just like the Steam client updates are. One thing Sony failed to realize is that the day the PS4 gets hacked for homebrew, hackers can access the predownloaded games, launch them, and play a paid game... Free of charge, apart from anti-piracy parameters.

At the same time, no mentions about the anti-used games thingy, that rumor that new gen consoles would provide a technology to prevent the play of used games?

I see the Dualshock 4 looks a little weird. Looks more boxy than the other Dualshock controllers.

Suspending games... Would that be exploited as save states or something?

Real names ahead of friends on PSN. Meh. I always provide a fake real name.

But what I hope is that the new PS4 allows you to disconnect off those social services and play without interuption from friends or whoever else, maybe play offline.

We'll have to wait to see...

"It's a multitasked computer, right? So while it's downloading, let's play the game!" That.... is pretty awesome.

This means that Sony probably will charge for playing used games... heck, companies win now.

Not bad. I guess. But considering the specs, I think its going to be quite expensive.

Just don't buy it on launch, unless you're rich or want to keep it as a trophy or collection, or sell it later for more.
I heard rumors of people buying the PS3 on launch then getting broken, and eventually re-buying it. This makes it more expensive at launch.

Wonder what Mircosoft will pull out of the bag with the next Xbox? I also wonder how solid the Christmas 2013 release date is.

What would interest me is seeing what the PS4 is like when it comes to performance. Like Pooka said, a lot of the current gen consoles had problems on release, especially the Sony and Mircosoft conoles. Hopefully their be a lot less problems this time with the consoles upon release.
Spoiler: click to toggle
