Yes, it's me again, I thought I'd pop by. :) Anyways, as I'm currently in the process of learning HTML and some other site programming languages, I've decided that I'd like to create my own Sonic forums. I know I can do this in practically any free forum hosting site, but they don't have the features I'd like to use. I've already drawn up the plans for the site, and how everything should potentially run. The only thing I have to do is code it and host it through my own domain name. Once I learn enough HTML, JavaScript, and CSS, then it can all be put into action. So here's where I need help. I have the perfect domain name, which I will not reveal to avoid anyone taking it for themselves underneath me. :P So, as I was saying, this particular web domain costs about $1,800, and before I can fully execute it and run the site after learning the languages, I need to use my own domain name. After that, I'm going to host it. However, I need help with the high cost of the domain name. Does anyone know where I can fund it quickly, so I at least know I HAVE the domain name? I don't think Kickstarter would allow it, and even if I could, I'm just trying to make sure I GET the domain name for myself. :P So... any thoughts? |

Costs involved in an effort like that one far exceed the costs of the domain name alone. If anything, the domain is pennies compared to the costs of your software, hosting, and so on. Dropping $1800 on a new venture such as that one, especially in an area already flooded with similar setups, is asking for failure unless you can present some originality in what you're trying to do. HTML is easy enough to learn, as is CSS; Javascript is a scripting language, and therefore involves programming constructs (themselves independent of syntax). You won't be fully mastering something like that overnight. Also, note that the three languages you listed above are not the end-all for your situation. You will need to learn to work with FTP, manage your database(s), and perform the duties of a Webmaster/web administrator on the whole. Languages such as PHP allow for server-sided events, whereas Javascript handles things mostly on the client side (though some fiddling with AJAX can produce some nifty results that could certainly fool a person into believing the work was done server-side, in some cases: stay tuned, more on that later). I guess what I'm trying to say is, in a Don't do it. EDIT: damn it dennis, you and your faries Edited by Parin, Jun 30 2015, 02:11 PM.

Well, I know it's not going to be quick. I'm actually planning on taking college courses for web design as well as game design, so I'm basically just a complete amateur at this point. :P However, when you mentioned the cost, I heard it was quite possible to simply type up all of the code in a document in HTML format, then execute it in a browser. Then, you can use a domain name and host it using a service. I heard GoDaddy does it for about $5 a month, if that's even accurate. In quite short, though, I simply have an idea on how to make my own Sonic-type forums myself, and I need to find a way to execute it. I don't know how, though. :P |

Just go to HostGator. If the domain you want to use is available, you can get it for as little as $10 per month on the Baby plan. |

I think you'd be safe here revealing what that domain would be if it costs eighteen hundred freaking dollars. I don't think any of us are stupid enough to drop that just to deny you that particular domain :P |

I was suggesting somewhat that you find a cheaper domain than whatever you're currently leaning towards (assuming you were to do this at all). That's crazy expensive, and should be the smallest part of your project cost.

You could start a "Go Fund Me" page, but I'm sorry I don't have that much cash lying around. Also, Parin pointed all those things out, and that's a lot of work. I know you like being a Lone Ranger, but for something like that I would HIGHLY suggest getting some kind of staff to work with you on that. Someone who has experience and can help you learn. (That's based on past experience of trying to do it all, otherwise, your progress will be slow.) Edited by Two Tailed Warrior, Jun 30 2015, 06:45 PM.

I've built several websites (okay, hosted and set up FTP and databases for), the new Two Tailed Fox Network being the latest one. But hosting in its own is expensive. Dreamhost is a very good one, and I swear by it immensely. However, it clocks in at $120 a year. It does let you have unlimited storage and domains, though, but domains cost money by themselves, and require a yearly renewal, one free one with your hosting plan. |
