Great Idea for a topic!
My opinion is never final, and ranking games in order isn't really my thing, but here goes. I'm including any Sonic game, main series or otherwise.

10: Sonic 2
9: Knuckles Chaotix
8: Sonic Unleashed (HD)
7: Sonic Lost World
6: Sonic 3 and Knuckles
5: Sonic Colors
4: Sonic Adventure
3: Sonic CD
2: Sonic Adventure 2
1: Sonic Generations

Edit: Oh man, I forgot Sonic Heroes. Make that 4 1/2.

Ramble, ramble, ramble. <--That sums up most of my posts. I'm comically inactive though. I'm trying to learn Japanese, but I won't make myself enough of a fool to flaunt upon this forum what little (and most likely flawed) Japanese I do know. I'm also a comically inexperienced writer. In fact, I shouldn't even call myself that, but I'm taking a class for it, so damn it, I'll label myself a writer if I wish. Just kidding, just kidding, I'm not that self-righteous. In fact, I try not to label myself as much of anything. Labels are like chains-- Wait, I forgot for a minute that I'm writing a freaking signature. How do I even end this? Things were easier when I could just slap a bunch of anime GIFs into the signature box and call it a day. Oh! I have something interesting to say! Apparently my vision is slightly worse in my left eye than in my right. I'm also right handed. In fact, I've never met someone who told me they're left handed. Actually, I don't meet many people at all. Ramble, ramble, ramble. Wait, is anyone still reading? If so, congratulations for reading tiny text. My sister actually has extremely poor eyesight. Apparently it's genetic, but strangely my eyesight is actually pretty great. Blah blah blah.

That's somewhat the way it goes for me. Numbers ten through two will always shuffle or change, but number one will always remain the same.

In case you're wondering, I don't hate Sonic '06 (Sonic Next-Gen) at ALL. It's the one that I've had the most fun with, and I think it's the most epic of the series. However, nobody else agrees with me at all online, and people have actually told me I was IGNORANT for not caring about the certain, ahem... "flaws..." in the game.

Oh, and you've played Knuckles Chaotix? How'd you manage to grab a hold of THAT game? :P

I didn't actually. I'm pretty sure not many people who like Chaotix actually own it. I really hate using emulators, but I occasionally make an exception for a game no one played on a console no one owned. Believe me, I'd love to own an original copy, but I don't have the budget for that. I justify it to myself by saying that lots of other people probably played Chaotix via emulator. Meh. I still think it's a great game, regardless of how it's played.

10. Anything Olympic Games
9. Anything Sonic Boom (as it pertains to the games only, cartoon not included)
8. Sonic Unleashed (Werehog, specficially)
7. Anything Sonic Riders
6. Sonic Lost World/Colors

---
5. Sonic 4 (I actually enjoyed Ep.1 more than Ep.2)
4. Sonic Generations
3. Sonic Battle
2. Sonic Advance 1 & 2 or Classic Series (Trilogy/GG/Spinball/MBM) [Tie]
1. Sonic Adventure 1 & 2

I decided to go by series instead of individual games in some parts, so that I could squeeze in a rating for most games that I could think of. Numbers 6-10 I generally dislike, 1-5 are favorites of mine, particularly the top 3. I like 4 and 5, but the 1, 2, and 3 have always been my top picks.

As for Sonic 06, I really don't know how to feel about it. If you ignore its broken buggyness and the weird human/anthro relationship deal going on, its essentially another Sonic Adventure title. And given that series placement on my list, its hard to slam it entirely, but it is without a doubt an unfinished game.

Was always more of a Mario/Nintendo fan growing up but I played a lot of Sonic games on the emulated Sonic Mega Collection Plus and Sonic Gems on the PS2. Although I did have a Master System and Sonic Chaos was the first ever game I played Tails in.

#9. Sonic and Sega All Star Racing
#8. Sonic the Hedgehog (Master System)
#7. Sonic R
#6. Sonic Adventure 2 Battle
#5. Sonic Heroes
#4. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Knucles
#3. Sonic Adventure DX
#2. Tails Adventure
#1. Sonic Chaos

.......why am I pink?

I like how no one says the Game Gear version of Sonic 2. I was fooled into thinking it was like the Genesis version.

That game was depressing. And extremely hard, prolly because of the tiny screen.

Yes, I do love to roleplay. I don't like any more than two people involved, and I'm more inclined to furry/sci-fi. PM or IM me if interested.

10. Sonic the Hedgehog (Genesis)
  • Yup, the game that started it all is only at the #10 spot on my list. In all honesty, it really didn't age very well compared to the other genesis games. The stage design was pretty basic outside of Green Hill Zone. It plays like a generic platformer half the time. However, that doesn't make it a bad game by any means. It still has its charm, and the boss battles are very fun as well. The final boss too easy though.

9. Sonic Colors (Wii and DS)
  • A lot of people put this as their favorite Sonic game, or call it "The game that saved the series" which I am in complete disagreement with. It's a decent 3D Sonic game in its own right, but there are a lot of issues I see with it, the main being that there rarely is any 3D platforming in the game. It pretends to be a 3D platformer when in reality it's a glorified 2D platformer. This isn't a bad thing, but the big issues with this game are the pacing and level design. Too many times you are forced to slow to a standstill in the middle of going fast between having difficulty keeping the boost meter full and the difficulty spikes in platforming. Overall though, it's an enjoyable experience on the Wii. The 3DS counterpart was a great game in its own right.

8. Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood (DS)
  • I might be one of the only people who loved this game. It's a Sonic game in a genre I did not expect to succeed but Bioware really surprised me. They made a decent story arc, but the characters were nailed down pat. I was impressed how in depth each character was without seeming to out of character. The sound and music is very bleh but I might be able to fault that on the DS somewhat with its limited capabilities sound-wise. The battle system had its faults but was overall a fairly unique look at a turn based battle.

7. Sonic Adventure 2 (Dreamcast)
  • Both the Adventure games could pretty much be 6a and 6b because I don't rate them too far off of each other. I do give the edge slightly to Adventure 1 because of the open world, there wasn't as much emphasis on story-based gameplay, and less master emerald searching. Because I honestly do prefer fishing with Big over stupid master emerald searching. Many people wear nostalgia glasses when looking at these games, and I try not to and looking at it sort of objectively. There were always a lot of issues with these games, between camera angle problems, and the occasional "shoot you off the stage" moments that people seem to forget. The games do have a nice point on 3D gameplay however, and they are very enjoyable to play, even to this day.

6. Sonic Adventure (Dreamcast)
  • Not much else to add here from the last one. The Chao Gardens aren't as good, but at least they aren't better than the actual game like SA2. =P

5. Sonic Unleashed (360)
  • I could rant for hours about this game. Sonic Unleashed is one of the most underrated videos games I've ever played. Not just Sonic games, but all video games. Ever. The amount of hate this game has gained is nothing short of baffling to me. People are quick to dismiss it and throw it in the same pile as Sonic Heroes or Sonic 06. (Even Sonic Heroes isn't the worst game in the world.) For me personally, this game falls as my 2nd favorite 3D Sonic game, and it does a great job of that in the Daytime Stages. They are the fastest Sonic stages you'll ever play, and they are a blast. However, the big issue with this game regarding the Daytime stages is the trial and error aspect they run on. Play a bit, die, go a bit further, die, go a bit further, die, etc. While frustrating at times, learning the stages through good-old-fashioned grinding is very rewarding when you can show off your cool moves flying through a stage very gracefully. The side of the game that many people love to hate the game for is the Werehog stages. While slow, it's not the end of the world. This isn't like a change in pace midstage like Colors liked doing, but more of a different side of a game. The slow paced, platform-heavy, button mashing battling can be fun if you let it. It is a big issue with the length of stages however, as many stages take over 10 minutes to complete. That was always a problem for me, even someone who enjoyed playing as the Werehog. If the stages were more like 5-6 minutes long, I'm sure it would have rubbed off on people a bit better.

4. Sonic CD (CD)
  • This game had the unfortunate problem of being on a system I never owned in the SEGA CD. Because of this, I never got to play this game till a few years ago, and it may have hurt where it landed on this list because of it. I very much enjoyed what they added to the series after Sonic 3 with the time travel stuff and how varied the stages ended up being. It became a bit of a double edged sword, however, as the game can seem a bit too massive at times, despite being a 2D platformer. I've found myself running around areas looking for signs to jump to the past or future and halfway getting lost in what timeline I was even in. Still, this game managed to capture what 2D Sonic games are all about, even with adding a lot of new features.

3. Sonic Generations (360)
  • This game right here is the epitome of what a 3D Sonic game should be. Literally the only reason this landed as my 3rd favorite game is because of the Modern Sonic stages. Ironically enough, this game showed me why a 3D Sonic game could be better than a 2D game, unless the Classic Sonic stages were just...off or something. Half the time I was playing Classic Sonic I wanted to be in the middle of a Modern Sonic stage. Sonic Team did a fantastic job taking what they learned from Unleashed and Colors and put them together to form a fantastic balance of speed, stage design, and difficulty for the Modern Sonic stages. The only issue I have with this game is not the game itself, but the fact Sonic Team never took advantage of DLC possibilities, or even expanding what this game's success was into the next Sonic game.

2. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Genesis)
  • The last two games on this list are pretty obvious. What can you say about Sonic 2? Fantastic music, level design, art, difficulty, boss battles, etc. It's hard to find much issue with the game. Perhaps the one thing I could knock on it is the difficulty does spike a bit too fast once you reached the last couple stages. You could very easily be cruising through the game and die many many times on the Flying Fortress. This is a game I come back to again and again and again, and many times swaps between being my favorite and 2nd favorite.

1. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles (Genesis)
  • Here we go, the biggest of the bestest game EVAR. That wasn't a real sentence but oh well. I count Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles as one game since they were created to be one game but couldn't fit on one cartridge. The improvements on from Sonic 2 were small but worked effectively. The camera is a bit more zoomed out from Sonic 2, but at the same time there was a bit more detail into the characters. It's subtle, but a very nice touch. This game probably has my favorite bonus stages in the series. Challenging, yet not cheap like Sonic 2's sometimes was. The Super Emerald special stages tested your ability to the max and payed off greatly with the ability to have Hyper Sonic, Super Tails, and Super Knuckles. The story was a bit more flushed out than it was in Sonic 2, and while it wasn't much, it was a enough to keep you invested. BTW, a Final Boss battle in space was awesome.

Honorable Mentions:

Sonic Spinball (Genesis)
  • It's a Sonic pinball game. I mean there were better pinball based character games during this era like Kirby Pinball Land for example, but still...dude it's a Sonic pinball game.

Sonic Boom (3DS)
  • This game got some of the heat from the terrible TERRIBLE Wii U Sonic Boom game. The 3DS version wasn't great, but at the very least a solid title. The story is rancid and the characters are awful, but the core gameplay held the game together decently well. The pacing was rather off at times where you spend a little too much of your time searching for things, but overall a solid title.

Sonic Rush Adventure (DS)
  • This game was a complete surprise to me. It has the same gameplay style of the first Rush game, in which you pretty much play a 2D version of Sonic Unleashed but expands the open world format to a very nice degree. Searching for hidden islands, gathering resources to make better vehicles to search for even more hidden islands was actually a fun way to spend time between actual stages. Marine is just annoying though.

See that awesome list above this post? That is a real game countdown. Prepare to see mine fall horrifically short of the above post.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I, honestly, haven't played many Sonic games as Sonic is still a relatively new franchise for me (been a fan for 3 years, perhaps 4), and I never really got to play many games. Cutting out the fan games, and demos I never played fully (for fairness), this is my list:

#10: (Nothing to see here!)
#9: __________________
#8: __________________
#7: (Does my Minecraft skin count?)
#6: __________________
#5: __________________
#4: Sonic the Hedgehog (DS) > Sonic's hit box seems to be more sensitive in this version, plus I feel like a Save File is cheating.
#3:Sonic Adventure DX (PC Demo) > Pretty fun. Though I do have some minor complaints, I still would like the full version.
#2: Sonic the Hedgehog (Genesis) > This is the one Sonic game that I've played since I was a wee lad back in the early days, since it came with my dad's Genesis, and many memories were made off this game. I consider it an honor for one to complete the game on original system, because it takes days (usually about two weeks, depending on your schedule) to play, fail, restart from the beginning, etc. until the end. My dad and bro have beaten it with all the Chaos Emeralds as well, but I have never had the time to sit down and manage to reach the end. I hope to one day, though.

And finally:

#1: Sonic Riders (PC) > This is number one on my list for a number of reasons, the top including:
I find it an awesome game.
It is in a familiar play style, being a racing game. (Your average Sonic gameplay style is not what I've grown up with.)
IT'S A SONIC PC GAME! I am a huge PC gamer, so when most things are on consoles, I usually don't have the console for it. Plus,
It has that old PC game feel that brings back memories of the days of Windows '98 and like systems. The 2006 year marking assures me relatively good graphics and performance, but the game not being so new that it's not like some other games nowadays.
I found the plot reasonably good, and even though the Babylonian Rouges are big jerks, Jet still looks pretty cool (plus he's my favorite color).

So there you have it, from the man who hasn't played too many Sonic games. (I do like Sonic & Mario at the Olympic games, but that's another topic and I felt like it didn't fit well into this list.
