I don't have a Wii U, nor Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric. However, I plan on buying both in the near future. With that said, I've seen a LOT of negative flack and bad reviews towards Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, and many have even stated that it's worse than Sonic '06 (though I enjoyed it). There's a large glitch in it that's been patched, and many have complained about how bad this game was even before it was released. On the other hand, when I first saw the earliest game footage for it, I was practically amazed. I thought it looked like something that would bring Sonic back to fandom. Yes, it looked THAT amazing! I loved the new designs, and the game-play looked really fun, for the most part. The thing is, my first impressions of this game weren't negative, but rather positive. However, it's been muddled since I read and saw so many reviews practically bashing this game. I personally don't believe that I'll hate it. In fact, I might even enjoy it once I buy it. However, I need a heads up from someone directly who played it. Was Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric any good at all? |

No. But it could've been better than it was, had it not been for mismanagement on the part of SEGA. It's a similar case to Sonic 06, IMO: the core concept is somewhat flawed on its own, but it still could've been at least passably fun if it actually were properly debugged and given the care and attention to detail that some other popular franchises receive (aka: Mario). |

Oh, it wasn't? Well, if that's true, why is SEGA trying to continue the Sonic Boom franchise? I mean, not that Fire and Ice could automatically be bad, but it's not profitable at ALL. The Sonic Boom series hasn't worked for a large chunk of the fan-base, which is why I wanted to keep an open mind about the Wii U title. As for Shattered Crystal... never played it, either. I heard it's the better of the two, so I might get that one first to play it. Is THAT one any good? If not, then why would SEGA even consider a sequel? I'm going to have to derail the topic (since I can't change the title to "Are Lost World and Rise of Lyric any good?"), so hear me out. I'm also considering buying Sonic Lost World. I'm sure that it's probably much better than Rise of Lyric on the Wii U, but I don't know. Anyone here who's played that game (either version)? Just one more note that I need to tack on. Whenever someone criticizes this game, they compare it to Sonic '06. It seems like the hate for that game will never end, even though it's not even CLOSE to being a bad game, even for what it was. Sure, everyone's entitled to their own opinion about it, but it seems like there's a large bandwagon for it. Anyways, I wonder when SEGA will consider a Sonic the Hedgehog: Rebirth of Chaos. |

I won't ramble too long on my thoughts so I'll keep them short. =P To be frank, I consider Sonic 06 to be better than Rise of Lyric simply because pushing the bugs aside, 06 had a better core in terms of story (somehow but yes it's true), gameplay, and style. The real problem with Rise of Lyric lies beyond the fact it was a terribly coded mess. Horrible story, empty characters, very repetitive and boring gamplay, etc. Even with the bugs corrected, this game had no chance to be successful. 06 on the other hand would stand alone...kind of...with some polish. The story is rancid as well, but it was at least creative. The gameplay was awful, but at least had some good variety. The characters are still just as empty but really the only Sonic game ever to have deep, interesting, characters was Sonic Chronicles which was written by Bioware. =P Shattered Crystal, I'll say what I always say about it. It's just okay. The story and characters are mind numbingly bad at times, but the core gameplay holds the game together. It has some decent platforming and it's biggest issue is pacing. There's a little too much on adventure and searching, and not enough on platforming and speed. |
