The Sonic franchise has been around for 24 glorious years. I doubt we're gonna see it end anytime soon. However, it will need to end at some point in time. How do you think it'll happen? I'll tell ya my opinion when ya reply to this. :T12:

I have an animation in mind to answer this (as all humor of course), but I'll link it in a random animations sharing thread I'm going to make in the media area.

What I think will happen is that Sonic's friends are captured, and a beat-up Sonic is about to witness Eggman's final victory, but then:
1) Shadow becomes a traitor, and saves the day (intentionally or while trying to steal the victory).
2) The plan backfires on Eggman, ending him for good.
3) Sonic manages to win somehow on his own.
4) Some other character (either popular or perhaps made for the end plotline) will help give Sonic the chance to take Eggman down once and for all.

5) Plot twist: Eggman wins.

I like number 2 the most. That's how I would love to see it end officially.

Who is Pooka?

The series is too stubborn to die. With tons of Sonic 'fans' hating Sonic every now and then, it is actually surprising that the series can manage it off without tumbling down to their level, giving up and dying.

The only way the series can properly end is if either side of the conflict gets taken out for good (death, permanent injury, doesn't matter). Without Sonic, his companions would probably not do right without the coordination from him, and without Eggman, the world is already saved and there's nothing else to do, folks.

The same way that most popular videogame franchises "end"; by entering indefinite limbo and serving only as the occasional basis for merchandising efforts. There will be no new entries to the game series, and no new anime/cartoons. You may see him pop up on a backpack or two, but he'll be by and large forgotten as he sits in some publishers collection of unused intellectual properties: see Hudson Soft for more details, using Bomberman and Bloody Roar as two noteworthy examples.

SEGA will never drive that last nail into the coffin. There won't ever be a definitive goodbye: at best, he'll simply fade away. It's because no publisher in their right mind would absolutely destroy their most profitable and famous asset outright; they can always use it for something, even if that something ends up being the lowly pachinko machine.

See also: Crystal Dynamics and their recent offering up of their IP to other developers, BandaiNamco's Klonoa series, etc. It'll likely be a cold day in hell before we ever see a Klonoa 3, but this doesn't stop him from appearing in the occasional one-off.
