In an very much unexpected announcement, SEGA today announced that the Wii U exclusive Sonic Lost World has been ported to PC and will release on Steam on Nov 2nd for $30. The game which was originally being made for PC, sends Sonic to the lost hex world, where he has to face off with the deadly 6 on Parkour style levels.

The game requires Windows 7 or later with a Core i5 processor or better, and 3GB RAM. The recommended graphics card is NVIDIA GTX 460 or better.

Preorders are open now at http://store.steampowered.com/app/329440/, all preorders made include All Stars Racing Transformed for free.

I'm still in conflict about getting a Steam account. I want to play the games that come out only on steam, but I don't want to have to get Steam itself.

I know in the UK they sold stuff like Sonic Generations on and actual disc when one could only get it on Steam in the U.S. Will the same rule apply to this game? I would love to see more Sonic PC games again in general.

Also, Pooka, the reason I think they have the DRM to prevent pirates from doing piraty things. But it is inconvenient to all the honest people who just want a simple back-up.
Not to be a selfish Pook, but... I want to make a Pook's Law to clarify how stupid DRM is! Anyways.

No, please don't get a Steam account. You don't want to pay for game copies that treat you not like a honest consumer who paid for the game, but as a potential to-be-pirate. If the game copy is willing to trust you by providing no DRM at all, by all means support it. If a game copy is willing to scoff at you being a honest consumer by providing DRM with it, steer clear and never think of it again.

Sonic Generations was sold on just a DISC? If you let me know if that is true or not, I should be able to rebuy the game again, free of DRM.

And finally, DRM is supposed to stop piracy, right? Oops, no, it didn't. All DRM did was add an extra piracy check for pirates, and one easily crackable at that. In fact you could download a tool that allows you to trick any game by thinking that Steam is running, and it will work with little troubles... guaranteed. Its just that if you want to stay honest, might as well bend over to whatever DRMy crap they're going to throw in your face, from online activations to using accounts online and never being able to play the game without Steam. Trust me, you want to stay clear, even if its Sonic and even if its SEGA.

Ask yourself, why should you buy a game at full price when in the end you only get a rental from the service and its never your own? Why pay for a game at full price if you're not even in control of it, but some company over the internet is and has control of what you play?

.......why am I pink?

I never really had a problem with Steam, except when it goes down at times.

Anyway, the best place to get non DRM games would be GOG.com.

Yes, I do love to roleplay. I don't like any more than two people involved, and I'm more inclined to furry/sci-fi. PM or IM me if interested.

Pooka, the disc version of Sonic Generations PC requires the activation of a Steam CD key included in the box.

I thought he said they were sold only on disc in the UK... but. Grr.
Yes, the best place to get DRM-free games in which you're not treated as a potential to-be-pirate is GOG.com. Any game you find there is DRM-free. Period.

And you know what's funny? Pirated copies tend to be superior. While legit consumers are probably waiting for the game to be playable after issues such as servers down or whatever, the pirates have already beat the game, and like twice, and not missing one bit of the original experience, only without paying a dollar or a pound. And these same pirates can play the game without having had a Steam account to begin with, or even the Steam program, which allows them to reinstall Windows and do the heck they want with their PCs as many times as they like, and still play without having to install Steam.

And DRM raised piracy rates anyways. The demand against DRM makes it so that the DRM'd version of a game is pirated and cracked first, then the DRM-free version being pirated. Sucks.

I respect your opinion Pooka, but perhaps discussion on Steam and DRM platforms on the whole is a subject broad enough for a separate thread. Though copy protection is indeed an important subject in regards to any digitially distributed title, let us try to focus more on the game itself, and less on the service through which its distributed if we can.

Personally, I'm excited to play this installment in 4k. I have some new equipment coming, so that'll be quite the experience for me. What really sets this apart, though, is the opportunity for the modding community to get ahold of it; I do hope that they make more of an effort towards this game than they did with the PC port of Sonic Adventure 2, as that game received barely anything that couldn't already be accomplished with a copy of the Gamecube port and an Action Replay.

All retail games for PC made by SEGA require Steam anyways, as that's their primary DRM system now, so you can't avoid it.

Unless it's certain newer titles (DA2, ME3 and DS3 being prime examples) published by EA, then you're stuck with the unbridled horror that is Origin (or "EAs pretend Steam they made instead of selling it on the real one like smart people", as a Youtube video I saw put it)

On topic, I actually have most of the Sonic games on Steam (baring Sonic 4, since it hasn't really had a decent sale yet) so I'll likely nab this one once it goes on sale for at least half-off.

Both are unavoidable unbridled horrors of the same scale, no doubt about that. How come Steam is great while Origin is the horror here? Or how is Origin the ONLY horror while Steam isn't even if they are replicas from different companies? Oh, and I wouldn't call myself a smart person if I were to use Steam (selling or buying games on it), sorry random YouTube quote.

Pooka, again, this topic isn't about Steam. This is a topic about Sonic Lost World coming to Steam. If you want to talk about Steam, discuss it in the thread that we have already for it. If you don't have anything else to say about Sonic Lost World, then please leave the topic.

It's a combination of two things:

1)Steam has the biggest support base and most PC gamers that have gone digital primary use Steam. Using multiple services is a pain.

2)Despite their beep bep get outta the way tails!ty costumer service (as in waiting a month to have a trouble-ticket answered), Valve has proven to be at least trustworthy and to give some amount of damns about the fans as evidence by the way they realized their mistake and pulled the paid mods for Skyrim and issues an apology instead of pitching a fit like EA would've.

2b)It'll be a cold day in hell before I trust EA with my Credit Card.

Apologies for getting off, this will be my second and last post about it.

Shoboni, I know you're trying to be good about this and you said this would be your last post on it, but all this discussion could either be put in a new thread about these services, or strictly in a PM with Pooka.

This is a topic about Sonic: Lost World, let's keep it that way.

I wonder if this means will got ports of some of the other previously console exclusive games.

I'd love to the see HD ports of the Wii-Exclusive stuff hit PC and possible a remaster of Sonic Chronicles.

I never even thought of a re-master of Sonic Chronicles. That would honestly be super awesome. I wonder how a Rise of Lyric port would go on PC. =P
