Sega Apologizes for quality of recent Sonic games.
Honestly this seems like more of the same... Sega has apologized in the past towards the fans for their Sonic games so I am not so sure if I should believe them. Also they have been aiming for a more classic approach to Sonic since like, 2009... I am not impressed nor am I looking forward to anything they do. So many fans have wanted a wide variety of games, not just classic, I love Sonic Adventure and would love a new game styled after it... But They Are Doing The Exact Opposite Of What I And The Fans Want, Sega Is Disappointing So Many Of Us Loyal Fans And It Is A Shame As They Are Pandering To Those Who Do Not Have Love In Their Hearts. What do you all think about this...? : ( |

I think it's a mixed bag. Granted not every game they've released has been a hit, but also the fan base has become a little picky. Not all, but quite a few of the Sonic fans now are adults, and as a kid they played the original games. With the introduction of 3-D, that opened a bunch of possibilities, but everyone seems to have different ideas of how the franchise should use this new tech. Therefore, whenever someone plays a game that doesn't go according to how they think it should go, they say the game was terrible. Similar could be said about Sonic Boom. Even I personally got annoyed by the fact that the episodes were separate islands of story, but then who was the show aimed at? 7-12 year olds to introduce Sonic to those who weren't around from the beginning. But on the other hand, not every Sonic game has been the best that it could be. I can't say too much though because I still have only played a few, and I have never beat any 100%. Overall, I think SEGA is apologizing because the fans won't, and as a company they do have to hold up their reputation. If they displease the fans and say nothing, then they run the risk of losing customers and their reputation. |

That right there. We have have a horrible problem with unpleasable fanbase (especially the "first party" purists that dislike any game made after the fall of the Dreamcast) and it's lead to some good games being either nit-picked or downright ignored out of bias. One site actually gave Black Knight a WORSE score than 2006 (or Sonic: Over the Road Racing as I like to call it because of it's horrible technical state) |

"Mirth is like a flash of lightning, that breaks through a gloom of clouds, and glitters for a moment; cheerfulness keeps up a kind of daylight in the mind, and fills it with a steady and perpetual serenity." Joseph Addison Yes, I do love to roleplay. I don't like any more than two people involved, and I'm more inclined to furry/sci-fi. PM or IM me if interested. | |

I kid you not, I had to stop playing because I got a near-fatal bug where I died and a collapsing platform didn't respawn with me, so I was stuck in a loop of just dying and restarting everytime I hit that spot. It's just a horrible mess of a game and the only reason I keep it is because I'm a collector and really bad games are often interesting curiosities to have. |

Sonic Adventure was the quintessential game of my childhood, so I do love it, but I'm a bit confused by what you're saying. From what I understood, you want SEGA to end its return to classic game structure and branch back out into varied styles...but critically I don't understand why they would try to make those leaps yet again. From my observation, they've been trying to diversify for years, and that's exactly what has been hyper-criticized by the public. When they've put an increased emphasis on a cleaner, more classic structure, they've been getting some good rep back. Granted I haven't had the systems to play most of their recent stuff (though I got Generations and Sonic 4), but I've been following along. What I've also heard is that their association with some other company has somehow pushed them to this kind of apology and statement that they're going to take their time with games from now on, which I think is a good sign. Saying "oh, sorry, we need to improve" isn't the same as saying "oh, sorry, we need to improve this specifically, and we'll get on it, starting now". An attitude of taking time to produce better material gives me hope. Sonic rushing is good. Sonic Team rushing is bad. What I really think needs to happen, and what I feel has been happening lately, is that SEGA needs to give up this attitude of needing to "get back what was lost and return to former glory/pull crazy stuff in cheap attempts to regain popularity" and move into an attitude of "being awesome in the bright way that Sonic is just destined to be". In essence, they just need to chill and make fun stuff and I feel like all will work out for them in the end because of how naturally superior the characters are. Oh, and I approve of their games in the mobile market. Pretty good stuff all around. Also good choice on whoever runs the Sonic FB page. The Boom games may not have worked out, but I do like core character focus. Edited by Scientific Tails, Oct 31 2015, 01:07 AM.

Sonic Team has always had the issue with identity in the Sonic games in the 3D format. Whether or not a game is successful, they always fail to hold on to something for more than 2 games. For example, Sonic Adventure series was doing fairly well, but they wanted to go in another direction with Sonic Heroes. That game didn't fair to well, so they attempted to backtrack to the Adventure style with Sonic 06. We all know how horribly that went. So then they had Sonic Unleashed which laid some nice ground work, Colors had minor improvements, Generations was fantastic and them BAM, out the window that style goes. Then they try out something new in Lost World. Eh, it was okay, so they try something new again in Sonic Boom. Pretty much a failure, so they try something new again...etc. etc. They never seem to want to mold their craft into one style. The Mario series has been doing it forever it seems. The New Super Mario Bros. style has been recycled countless times with a lot of success. The one time they deviate from the norm (Mario Sunshine) was actually a drop off in quality from their other main games (Mario 64 and Galaxy). Sonic Team needs to focus on releasing a more stable type of game that can be built on for the long-term, rather than this schizophrenic style they've been throwing out for the past 15 years. |
