Hey, I'm back. Anyways, I know that basically everybody knows all of the game's flaws by now, but don't forget that I used to consider this game to be very high art about two years ago when I first played it. Since then, let's just say things have changed. I've noticed things within the game that personally hurt myself, and I'd like to write about them. First off, the story. You know, before I even bought this game, I used to consider this game to probably have one of the greatest ideas for a story to ever exist. Scientists try to recreate their sun god in a lab, which is then sealed up inside Elise to prevent destruction, only to have Eggman want to get his hands on that power? Sounds pretty amazing, if you ask me! Wait, there's a psychic hedgehog from the future that goes back in time to prevent destruction? Woah! There's a Shadow clone that is persuading this hedgehog so he can destroy the entire universe? WOAH! Probably sounds like this game will have the greatest story in any Sonic game, am I right? NOPE. While the concept is absolutely amazing, the game itself literally does NOTHING with this. In Sonic's story, you're basically chasing after Elise and saving her from Eggman a bunch of times. That's basically it. In Shadow's story... I honestly have no idea what his main purpose is. They retrieve the Scepter of Darkness from Eggman, which breaks, which motivates Shadow to seal him up or something? Seriously, what's the meaning behind this story? Silver's story is the most interesting of the three, but there's just one problem. Silver has absolutely no personality outside of just doing anything anyone says. He doesn't necessarily fight back or anything, and hardly ever questions himself outside of that one time. Then there's the last story, which I somewhat admit was my favorite of the campaigns, but were still poorly written. Before I actually bought this game, I thought this game would have an action-packed story where all of the characters would work together to overthrow Eggman's plans before finally being betrayed by Solaris. THAT would have been cool. It wasn't like that at all. The game doesn't have any interesting soul to it whatsoever. The animation and voice acting is what really makes it dull. Compare it to some of the scenes from Sonic Unleashed, where the animation and voice acting is absolutely gorgeous. In this game, however, the characters are really stiff, are badly animated, and have plain voice acting. Some scenes are absolutely boring to watch because of this. In fact, I think borderline ALL of them are bad to watch because of this animation. Seriously, no matter how many times I want to stick around for the story when I replay it, I almost always end up skipping the scenes because I'm bored to death. Oh, and the Sonic and Elise romance? I'll admit that it doesn't bother me THAT much, but it was written so poorly and was very forced in this game. Now for the game itself. I saw videos of this game before I bought it, and the stages absolutely blew me away with how creative they looked at the time. They looked like a blast! The game had a lot of promise that I thought I would be amazed by. I bought the game with the belief that this game isn't as bad as they say it is. The hub worlds won't be as lifeless as everyone says they are, the people won't be as dumb, the missions won't be as boring, the loading times won't be as bothersome, and the glitches wouldn't be as apparent. This is what I believed when I bought the game, but before I played. Then I played it. I was ABSOLUTELY WRONG. The hub worlds are lifeless, the glitches are more apparent than ever, the missions are awful, the loading times motivate me to never touch this game ever again, and this game has a LOT of flaws that I never even expected when I first bought the game. The levels are all boring and uninteresting. The combat is extremely repetitive and boring. The music is muffled and bland. The story is awful. This entire game is an absolutely miserable experience from the beginning to the end. I would drastically like to apologize to myself for ever trying to convince myself that this game had anything decent to offer even AFTER I played it. --- Though to be fair, I did kinda play it SO many times and learned just about every aspect of this game, so maybe this is the result of being bored with the game because I know basically everything about it. I will admit that I had an absolute BLAST on my first two play-through(s) of the game, despite all of these problems being within it. Then I had to over-analyze it and post a bunch of info about it on the SEGA Forums, which led me to learning every aspect of the game and wanting to hate it. So here's a little lesson in life. If there's something that you absolutely enjoy doing... do it sparingly. By constantly breathing it in on a daily basis, you will grow to hate it. A LOT. Do not over-analyze something if you don't have to. Rather than trying to figure out how the magician did those tricks, just let the tricks speak for itself and be amazed with the magic. |
