My thoughts so far, even though it's tough to get much from these trailers: Sonic Mania It looks nice. Nothing ground breaking or anything; just a very simple throw back to the old school Sonic games. It looks like they're trying to replicate the old engine and everything with some polish. It's honestly what the franchise needs really. This will work really well with the piece of the fanbase that constantly cries whenever anything involving change happens. Personally I will kick back and enjoy a game like this for awhile. It doesn't exactly wow me, but it doesn't have to. I'll say again, it's just something the franchise needed. Project 2017 It's very hard to tell by the trailer, but I'm crossing my fingers on a Generations-esque return. Generations is by far the greatest 3D Sonic game ever created. I mean, it's not even close in my opinion. What better way to launch a 25th anniversary than by going back to the best thing that's come from Sonic Team? I know they said on stream that this game won't be a sequel, but it doesn't have to be. If they do this right, and PLEASE USE THE HEDGEHOG ENGINE AGAIN, they could have a fantastic title on their hands. Sonic Team missed a huge opportunity for DLC with Generations as it practically made itself with using past game levels. I'm hoping heavily that this is make-up for that mistake. Goodbye Boom and hello Generations 2. |

Sonic Mania is a day one purchase for me. Sonic 2017, on the other hand, is a Steam summer sale purchase. I don't mind more Generations, it was a good game. I wish they would've let Modern Sonic have the entire game as opposed to splitting up development time between the Classic and Modern iterations (why bring him back now?), but I don't see this title selling at full price for very long. I'd also want to wait for proper mod support to kick in, etc. I really would've rather had more Adventure as opposed to this, but I'm happy with what was announced overall (moreso Mania than the 3D title, but both are okay nonetheless). |

Hay there. Long time no post. Its been a hard year for me. Any way good to finally have some idea of the new Sonic games. :T12: I am hoping that Sonic Mania will have low enough system requirements that I can run it on my lap top. I still only have a PS3. As for Project 2017 it comes later and so I am waiting to see what the NX and the rumored PS4.5 will look like. Not going to touch X box. :T15: PS What did every one think of the live stream audio? They needed Tails there to fix it Edited by SonicStitch, Jul 23 2016, 05:44 PM.

tl; dr: bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz The stream was absolutely awful. The event itself was pretty cool. The awkward dancing Sonic that was present on the floor when the DJs were there was kinda... sad to watch, but also kind of hilarious. It was like Sonic himself didn't want to be there, in a way. |

Is it just me or does this 2017 game remind me of earlier American backstories where Robotnik already rules a significant chunk of, if not the entire world. And while I have not seen the Sonic Mania trailer yet, upon seeing the icon on youtube I almost thought it was a fangame as it appears similar. |

I respectfully disagree. I think the Adventure games have sat in the nostalgic sun for too long time and many people, myself included for the longest time, seemed to always push them on a scale higher than they actually were. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the Adventure games are bad by any stretch. I would honestly love for the stories of the Sonic games to back to this instead of the crap that Ken Pontac and Warren Graff keep putting out. Seriously SEGA, get rid of these losers. They have no clue how to write; how in the world do they have a career in doing it? The story arcs have been horrible since Sonic Colors. Back to the gameplay of the Adventure games, they were good, but definitely outdated and buggy. Maybe an updated engine from the Adventure games could work, but the Hedgehog Engine is sitting there unused essentially since Sonic Generations, and every game using it were objectively good games. (Even Unleashed received praise for the daytime segments.) I will agree that we don't need to see classic Sonic moments in the new game, as hilariously enough I thought they were the weak part of Generations despite the constant criticism 3D Sonic games receive. Oh well, the fanbase cannot and will not be fully satisfied with whatever SEGA puts out. As long as the games are enjoyable, it's a win for me. :T14: |

My biggest reasons for supporting a third adventure title have to do with the way the game controls, and the way the levels are laid out. Generations always felt very linear to me with the exception of a very few segments within some of the modern levels. And while it's true that this can also be said about the Adventure series to an extent (moreso Adventure 2 than 1) the boost-fueled, "must go as fast as possible" gameplay from daytime Unleashed and modern-era Generations leads to slippery controls (I described it at one point as "running on ice", an opinion which I still stand beside) and limited options in the 3D level design as Sonic is encouraged to speed forward as quickly as possible with next to no interaction with the game environment. The relentless pace of the game loses focus on what made the classics so great and instead attempts to transform the game into a mascot racer without a vehicle; this is also supported by the fact that the game goes as far as to contain a dedicated drift button, a feature shared by Sonic R (which itself is a racing game). Generations modern-style gameplay is promising to me, but I don't think it will ever be truly great without a severe nerf to the boost function alongside tighter controls and slower speed overall. Not Boom speed or SLW walking speed mind you, but speed that is more manageable to the player. There also of course the fact that boost gameplay only really works for Sonic; You won't be seeing playable Knuckles, Tails, Amy, Cream...etc using this setup. All of that being said, there are a few reasons why I'd prefer an Adventure style title to a new Boost one. In the Adventure series, Sonic is explicitly designed with exploration of a 3D environment in mind. Speed is given more as a reward than as an instant gratification, only occuring after building up speed from running down sharp inclines, or hitting dash panels throughout the level. It's similar in design philosophy to the classic trilogy, and it's something that I feel works well. This lessening of speed happens to such a degree that while I still feel that I'm going more than fast enough, I also have time to react to my environment (which I also now have the ability to explore for hidden objects such as special stage keys, Chao containers, and item boxes amongst other things) without the excessive need for scripting and automation. When you give the player a button that says "press me to go fast", one that has grants invincibility no less, all that you've essentially done is granted them godmode and a higher speed cap. You mention bugs and aging as major problems for the first two titles, but as these are technical limitations rather than gameplay ones, they're something that I feel could be easily fixed in this age of games that are built from ready-made engines such as Unity and Unreal (which such a fanservice project would no doubt be created with, since as you mentioned, Hedgehog Engine wouldn't suit it well and the budget likely wouldn't be very high). We can cap all of this off with the terrible writing that you mentioned earlier. I don't think a potential Adventure title would utilize the duo of Pontac and Graff, and let me be completely clear when I say that I completely agree with your assessment on their writing abilities. They're the worst thing to have happened to this series in years, and I've absolutely resented their involvement in every game they've had the unfortunate privilege to work on. Their style doesn't mesh well with the Adventure series, in my personal opinion. |

I have mixed feelings about the boost. I get that it is over powered but I do really like the blinding look you get going at top speed. I feel like that is what its like being sonic. also in SA1 there are time when I really want a boost. Maybe not the blinding boost but Just some extra umf to get around some loops with out backtracking. If I dizined a Sonic game I would have the boost button do 3 things. 1 If sonic is not moving you get spindash. 2 if sonic is running it makes him go some what faster. 3 when sonic gets to a specified speed you get the blinding boost. |

I guess it could boil down to simply a preference for the 3D model going forward. I'm of a class of people who likes the speedy, twitch timing platforming that the Hedgehog Engine gives. Granted, as a rhythm gamer it fits me perfectly, so it makes sense. Scaling back the speed in favor of more platform heavy segments (Sort've like what Colors was able to do, with the Hedgehog Engine no less) would work just fine for me as well. Colors seems to be the game that many people point at to say "This is when 3D Sonic games were good again" and I can see why, even if I disagree. =p (Unleashed did it first! *Smacked*) What Colors did so differently from Unleashed's daytime stages was to scale back the speed and focus more on platforming as I said before. Maybe that's what got people to enjoy it so much. Perhaps a scale back from Generation's style would be a perfect mixture for a large fanbase of gamers to enjoy. The throw in classic style Sonic in Generations was an obvious gesture to quiet the "We hate change, make everything like the early 90s games" crowd. With Sonic Mania they get their game, so this Project 2017 game doesn't necessarily have to look like a Generations 2, and can focus 100% on 3D Sonic gameplay. I originally said a couple years ago that Sonic Boom was going to make or break Sonic for the future, but I think I heavily overestimated the weight the Boom series held. The Wii U game was an absolute bombshell of a game. Personally I think it's worse than Sonic 06. If it launched alone it might've done some real damage. However the 3DS game wasn't terrible, and managed to hold on with its solid gameplay choices. It did well enough to invoke a sequel which I'm excited for, so I'm hoping that game works out. I'm blabbing all this because I won't make the same mistake in calling this new batch of games a make or break situation again. Even though I think SEGA is going the right way with these games at this point, if they managed to botch them all I still don't think it'll be detrimental to the future of Sonic. Sonic as a gaming franchise almost seems unsinkable at this point. |

http://www.sonicretro.org/2016/03/retro-spotlight-unleashed-project-2-0/ This will probably make you very happy. I think they're going to be trying to port over all the daytime stages from Unleashed now. Savanah Citadel Act 5 is in there already. |
