Political Climate of Choroka

Years ago. The two isolated islands in the Curuzan Sea (threw some letters together to give it a name, feel free to come up with other ideas) was home to many indigenous tribes of people. They were mostly seafarers like their neighbors to the east; traders, pirates, fishermen. While some few managed to cultivate a few patches of fertile land to grow crops and raise livestock.

However, fifteen years ago, the bandit clan known as the Children of Starch invaded the largest island; Lahkra and pillaged the towns and villages. Terrified, the people fled to the neighboring island of Choroka for safety but the bandits followed. The Charokans and Lahkrans tried to resist the horde but were unable to make a stand with only Choroka’s meager resources at their disposal and so were overrun. The Children of Starch did not leave after the last village was razed though. Instead, they settled on Lahkra and built their city of Spudtopia. Their leader and warrior chief, Tifaní, let the few remaining natives of Lahkra and Choroka remain on the smaller island under advice from the Potato Priestesses as they said these people were needed for regular sacrifice to the great lord Spudicus.

The remaining natives soon all came to call themselves Chorokans, though a few will refer to themselves as Lahkrans (usually the bigoted and haughty). More villages and towns have been built and just as many have been destroyed once again by the bandit raids. Adding even more pressure was the contract the Children of Starch made with the pirates to the east; granting them safe harbor and trade so long as they would only attack native Chorokans, sometimes even going so far as to pay them when they do not feel like sending their own men to pillage.

Currently, Choroka has eight established villages: (subject to change)

  • Loquia (where Al, Regina, Quinn, Rak, and Catalina live. Run by a true democracy in which all citizens congregate to pass any legislation).

  • Ronova (Quinn’s previous home before becoming an orphan. Maintains a sovereign governor).

  • Regalia (Largest of the villages and most fortified. Ruled by several Chiefs that manage social, economic, and military issues. They are not elected but rather chosen from the lineage of Regalia’s 5 founding families).

  • Krei (The oldest of the still-standing villages that has survived countless raids. Lead by an elected prime general whose term ends by either relinquishing the title or death. The later being quite common in Choroka).

  • Kalpra (Primary fishing village but unable to construct vessels large enough to get them off the island. The village is run by a unified Fisherman’s Guild that tries desperately to cling to any small profits they make).

  • Hyakan (village carved into a small mountain. Most of the villagers live sub-terrestrially. Presiding over them is an Underground King whose word is law).

  • Ellasera (the often called “lost” village that is somehow elusive even on a small island like Choroka. Unknown political structure).

  • The Garden (“village” were captured people are farmed to be sacrificed in the Children of Starch’s rituals. Some children are even brainwashed into joining the bandit clan. Governed by a ‘Lord Masher’ chosen by Tifaní himself).
