::USS Renaissance:: ::Counselor's Office:: ::0900 Hours:: ::One day before the battle:: After her meeting with the ship's Captain, Dr. Maya Takagi recognized the enormity of Renaissance's mandate. Commander Hayakawa was on board, reluctantly, but this would be a team effort. She would have to start building an alliance between the Senior Officers. Maya knew the ship's XO from the Academy. They had started the same year, and lived in the same dormitory. He had been a popular figure on campus, but a trouble maker. When Scott had been expelled two years into the Academy, Maya had expected never to see his name again. Yet here he was on the Renaissance, with a distinguished service record as long as his list of disciplinary infractions. More so, the crew of the Renaissance, apathetic to and unsure of their CO, spoke praises of their executive officer. She had scheduled her appointment with him as the first thing of the day. They had much to discuss. Scott had been looking forward to this meeting for some time. Pretty much since he'd become aware of the councilor assigned to the Renny. Not only was she a shrink...not only was she a Betazoid, which meant the chance to thwart the much vaunted empathic powers...but she was a person Scott knew. They'd been at the Academy at the same time. They'd been even in the same Dorm. He doubted she'd remember, but they'd been to a few parties with the same crowds. He wasn't sure, but his room mate (who, in fairness, did boast about things he'd never actually done..) had bragged about having slept with her. Oh, yes...this was going to be fun. This would be among his better chess games. As ordered, he reported for his appointment. Albeit ten minutes late, but he did have a reputation to maintain, and he wasn't about to tip his game, by not living up to said reputation. After being admitted, he gave the woman, whom he noted was more attractive than he remembered, a grin, and promptly plopped down on the patient couch, kicking his feet up. His sapphire eyes glinted in the room's lighting, and his grin suggested arrogance and confidence, but at the same time, fun, and playfulness. "So, Maya...can I call you Maya, or do you want this to be formal? Either way, let's begin this with...how do you want this to go?" <Tag!> (OOC: S31???!!!! We need to chat....heh...heh...) |

When the Lt. Commander was five minutes late, Maya began to doubt he would show up. She was half way through typing an order to ships security to have him dragged in for "critical care" when Scott sauntered through the door. His antics were a bit of a surprise, but Maya seemed unphased. She recognized this was the first episode in what would be an ongoing comedy-cavalcade of Renaissance Officers trying to one-up her. At least Scott was friendly about it. "It's nice to see you again, Commander Freeman," Maya said as he entered. It seemed sincere, but she smiled a bit slyly. "In fact, it's nice to see that you're still in Starfleet, and a senior officer at that." "I am actually surprised," the Counselor explained, honestly. She had expected him to become a failure, but he was anything but. "Your record here indicates an exemplary career." "That said, the next time you're late to an appointment, I'll have your officer's lounge shut down for health violations, and the beer you've been brewing dumped out the airlock," she added, with the same sincerity and slight smile as before. "As to your questions, I prefer to be called Doctor Takagi, especially if we're in the company of other crew. Maya is fine, once we become friends." "What I'd like to do this morning is talk about your assignment to the Renaissance, its mission, and how we might make it successful," she finally explained. "Everything you share here is in confidence, though you should know I can read your thoughts and emotions. I won't rat you out to the Captain, but I am responsible for determining whether or not you are mentally fit for duty. You don't have to worry about that, unless you piss me off." She smiled. "So why don't you start by talking about why you're here, and what it's been like so far?" <Tag> |

"So why don't you start by talking about why you're here, and what it's been like so far? Scott relaxed, making sure he looked still as attentive as he actually was. This was, after all, the opening salvos. This was the part of the game that determined who began on the offensive, and who on the defensive. "Well, Maya," Intentionally taking the course she'd said had to wait, with a cocky grin, Scott leaned back even further. "I'm here, beacause some dipshit Admiral decided we all needed to die together. Is that close to what you'd like to hear?" Scott let his mind drift, not the part talking, nor the part listening, but the back part, the part that could sift through thoughts. And BOY did he let it drift. His first kiss, the time he got caught stealing, his father's bridge, the Nova Star Cluster...and any other random thoughts, that he knew would register high in his emotional and intellectual spectrum. "Are we getting anywhere yet, Maya? If not, we can hit up the Dubliner. I'm told I get chatty after a few beers. Maybe you will too?" After that comment, Scott intentionally let his mind, and his eyes, wander to other kinds of thoughts, about the councilor, and took no efforts to hide it. Yup. This was going to be fun. <tag> |

"I suppose I was expecting you to say something like that," Maya confessed. Commander Hayakawa had said just the same. "But I was hoping you would have a better perspective than the Captain." Maya was starting to feel that karma had come around. She'd spent enough time in her career watching people get tortured, and had begun to see how this new job could quickly become a form of torture for her. Yet as she sensed Commander Freeman's highly focused mind drifting, another possibility for her assignment presented itself. Scott's ability to control his thoughts was as good as many trained intelligence operatives, and with proper training could be uncrackable. She had thought she was aboard the Renaissance because she'd been a bit difficult with the Company, but it came to mind that this might be an extended recruiting assignment. So she smiled, as a challenging and annoying job had suddenly become interesting. He noticed the amusement on her face, but neither embarrassment or frustration accompanied it. She seemed quite entertained, in fact, and maintained eye contact as she took some notes down on a pad. And while her eyes showed amusement, he could see little emotion behind them. A Betazoid should be soaking up what he was putting out, but Scott could sense a hint of something cold inside the Doctor - more like a Vulcan than a Betazoid. And when he became just a bit curious, enough to try and guess what that cold, dead place inside her was, she dug into his mind. A quick strike, like a viper, that pulled out a string that led to a painful memory - his father punishing him as a child - something basic, primal and Freudian. She wasn't interested in hurting him, or dragging out the repressed roots behind his behavior. She simply gave him a hint of how much stronger his defenses needed to be. Just as soon as she made him feel it, she pushed the feeling and the associated pain away, clearing his mind. They were present again, in her drab little office with its outdated furniture and uncomfortable sofa. "I prefer wine to beer, Commander. And tennis to ping-pong," she stated, "I'm happy to pick up these mind games some other time, and I mean that. You're very good, and I find that fascinating." She could train him to be better, and in turn she would likely learn something about humans. Today wasn't the day for it. "But I have over 700 crew members to interview, many of whom have significant problems. Can we use this time effectively, and professionally, to do the job we've been assigned to do? If not, you're free to leave, but I can't promise I won't prod around in those lovely memories of yours and reduce you to tears every fifteen minutes... which I dare you to explain to your subordinates." So it would be - she'd have to threaten or blackmail everyone of these lot until the started to work with her. The CO got a friend, a confidant, and possibly a fashion stylist in exchange for her cooperation. The XO was going to get a regular psychic sparring partner in exchange for his. |

Scott could almost feel her picking into his brain, as he skipped topics, giving both dramatic, and worthless topics of his past for her to pick through, but her words confirmed it. He smiled, and not his normal cocky grin that got most people trusting him. No, this smile came from somewhere else, and had much more challenge to it. He fixed his bright blue eyes on his new chess mate, with a very directed stare. "Maya, there are places in my head you probably shouldn't go. For a number of reasons. Not the least of which being, if you uncover one subject, I think Starfleet Command will order someone to kill you. No joke. So let's play this fair, 'k?" For as light as he laid it out, Scott left it up to her, as to how much she chose to believe. "You want to evaluate me? Fine. Let's do this. But....if you're not ready, then by all means, tackle the rest of the crew, and come talk to me later, when you think you're ready." Scott started to stand, as he gave the counselor a slightly hard look. "You can't play the game halfway, you know." He knew he'd tipped his hand. Not that her probes had gotten much. His record with his father was not that secret. No, it was that she'd rattled him, and that was uncommon. That only increased the challenge... "You're call, Maya. But I think you're smart enough to know you're not getting what you want, in an initial interview." Scott smiled, as he slowly sat up. "You have other interviews? Cool. You wanna chat some more? Even better. Meet me in the Dubliner for a beer, and we'll chat." |

Maya recognized that he was stung, and she knew he'd need a little coaxing to come back in line. So she got a little upset, enough to let him know that he'd got his licks in too. "I'm not interested in getting to know you, Scott. Or talking about your past or your daddy issues or whatever. You're more than welcome to schedule time to discuss them, and I'd be happy to listen, but it's not necessary for my purposes," she snapped at him, "You've been evaluated, and you're clear for duty. If I find that your attitude problems are becoming a liability to the mission, then I'll reassess that diagnosis." "So please sit down, and let's talk about what we can do to help this crew to realize its potential," she pleaded, "Or get out of my office and I'll see you in three months, if we're all still alive then." <tag> |

Scott paused long enough to collect himself. He noted, bitterly, that the couple seconds it took, might well seem fast to anyone else, but it was an eternity to him. Very little caught Scott off guard enough to rattle his cage. He'd spent a lifetime guaranteeing that, through careful practice. And he'd gone into this little session over confident. It had cost him. It took all of maybe three seconds, for Scott to force his emotional state back to the same practiced calm he normally exhibited. His smile returned, but it wasn't quite the same grin. He sat, studying Maya intently. His thoughts were a wall of chess moves, hiding his own evaluations. Finally, he spoke. "You'll probably turn me down flat, Ms. Takagi, but I'd love to invite you to the weekly poker game. I'm also curious to see how your chess game is. I'm not caught off guard very often." He relaxed some, keeping his body language toned much further down. If she could play the game, he was more than willing to also. He'd underestimated her once, he wasn't about to do the it again soon. "I'll be honest with you, Counselor, the sad truth, is some of this crew has reached their potential. The simple facts are, what we do is not for everyone, and some people manage to slip through the cracks, for varying reasons." He sighed, glancing around the room a little. What he'd said was true. Under no commanders in the history of Starfleet, would some of these people ever manage to reform sufficiently enough to be accepted by even the loosest of commanders. "The rest of them? Time, and space. Yes, most of us lack discipline. No, none of us will improve, by having the whip cracked on a daily basis. It's not in out nature." Scott fixed his sapphire eyes on the woman before him, his smile still in place, but his expression a mask as to what he was really thinking. "This crew needs direction. It needs that direction to begin as something somewhat loose, and slowly become something tighter, stronger. More than anything else though, for this crew, overall, to reach it's potential, it needs something I don't see it getting." He rose slowly, his smile fading a bit, as he actually opened his mind somewhat to her, clearing the swirl of random thoughts away. "This crew needs to be trusted to do what most of them are actually very skilled at. Their jobs. Their careers. I've very rarely seen this much raw talent on a single ship, counselor. Let us do what it is we do, without interference." The last part, his face set itself as hard as stone. "I've gone over your files too, Maya. That's a long stretch of classified file. That suggests work with SFI. Did you know they flagged me as a candidate for psych warfare?" He turned, and headed for the door, pausing and turning back to face her, hands folded behind his back. "My best two guesses about this crew all being assigned to one ship are an Admiral who wants to buck for promotion, by telling some civilian idiot the great experiment was a failure, or some sick job thought up by the fools in Intelligence. Your long gap of classified files doesn't do much to convince me either isn't a possibility." His eyes narrowed as he looked at her intently. "So tell me, Maya Takagi, are you really interested in helping this crew achieve it's potential? Or are you assigned to us, to see how the great experiment plays out?" |

"I can't answer your second question, Commander, because I honestly don't know," Maya replied, not skipping a beat. She seemed quite relieved to be able to speak with him plainly. No one from her Company, nor from their ethical cousins in Starfleet Intelligence, had provided her with any orders or commands. Maya threw a tantrum in her section Chief's office, begging to be reassigned, and two weeks later she was on route to the Renaissance. She recognized that she still belonged to them, but they had yet to make any demands of her. "If you're wondering about my intent, which you have fair reason to be suspicious of, I'll be as clear as possible," she continued. "I want to help the individuals in this crew improve on all levels so that they can best serve the United Federation of Planets." "And if they cannot improve, I will work to remove them from Starfleet as soon as possible," she added, "I take my responsibility seriously in this regard. Some of you may not be fit for active duty on a starship, but may have uses in other divisions of Starfleet. Others should be discharged entirely. A handful should probably be shot and tossed out an airlock..." After speaking the latter quite seriously, she smiled. "Whatever recommendations I have will be sent up the chain of command, to yourself and the Captain." "As for your thoughts about how we should do what we've been assigned to do, I understand what you're saying. Treat the crew like they are a normal crew on a normal ship, something they've likely not experienced, and see if that leads to positive socialization," the Counselor continued. She understood him better now, and knew that she'd judged him unfairly based on his earlier song and dance. Scott wasn't interested in being the top inmate running the asylum. He fundamentally believed in the goodness of others, and in justice and fairness. This perspective was a necessary one aboard the ship. "That's a very kind way to go about things, Commander," she added, not trying to seem judgmental, but acknowledging in her way that he was a good guy. "I'm willing to back that play, with the tacit understanding that we also enforce discipline, by the book, like any other ship of the line. All infractions will be written up, though we discourage any immediate harsh penalties, including chewing out rule breakers or publicly embarrassing them in any way. In addition, the senior staff meets weekly, or more, to discuss the issues at hand... and we intervene directly as necessary." "How does that sound? And do you think the Captain will be on board?" <Tag Scott> |

Scott listened to her, carefully gauging her words, her tone, her body language, to get a better read on her. It was obvious, she had training other than her medical and psychological fields. She was certainly field agent trained. She was used to getting to people, usually undetected. She was good, too. Not many people he'd met could have drawn him out so fast. She seemed to be coming around, though Scott still wasn't too sure exactly how much of that was her training kicking in. She was going to be the type of challenge he enjoyed most. The kind that made the game worth playing. For the moment, he'd have to take what she was saying at close to face value. He had nothing else to go on, and his gut, which he trusted implicitly, told him, for the moment, she was playing an open hand. Well, as open a hand as she was ever likely to play with him. They'd established early on, that they could be very challenging to each other. And her rapid decision to play this game, suggested she was enjoying having the challenge as well. "The CO? I dunno. She's an odd one. To be honest, Maya, I think she may well be the most screwed up of this whole ship of screw ups. Which, if you ask me, is exactly why she was selected for the job." He shrugged, his mind now fixing on so many of the details of the ship, it's crew, and it's mission. "Who better to make this turn out the way it was actually planned, than someone who can barely hold it together on her own?" He shook his head slowly, as his mind went over everything he'd picked up about Miko Hayakawa. "No, if I had to take a guess, I'd say Cmdr Hayakawa is going to be bound, set, and determined to try to bully this crew into submission. It fits. She won't be on board, unless we can show her this is the only way to make it work." "And, Maya?" He grinned playfully once more, slipping back into character. "That offer for a drink is still open." |

"She's the CO. I won't go behind her back, so I suggest we present our case to her and see where it goes. You shouldn't under-estimate her capacity for compassionate leadership, Commander," Maya replied to his analysis. "I think treating our crew members with professionalism and respect is a good place to start. So, we shall see." Maya was, of course, open to more severe methods. Even venting a bad officer out of he airlock wasn't completely out of the question. For now she'd follow the regulations that she had sworn to uphold. "And I think I'll pass on the drink, sir," she confessed, "But... if you can gather the senior staff for a private game of cards, I'll be there. I'm interested in seeing how well you handle yourself in a room of people who might be better at bluffing than you are." Maya stood up and shook his hand. "Thank you, Commander." |
