::USS Renaissance:: ::Counselor's Office:: ::1030 Hours:: ::One day before the battle:: The Counselor needed a little time and a good cry after her meeting with the ship's XO. She hoped her next interview would be less of an outright challenge and more cordial. The ships Security Chief Francis "Frank" O'Connell would be responsible for keeping the peace aboard the ship, and on the front line of enforcing discipline. From his record, he was more than capable. The question Maya had was whether he was willing. <Tag Frank> OOC: his bio doesn't mention his service record or why he's on the Renaissance, so if you could fill in those details, that would be lovely.

Frank headed down to the medical deck for his counseling session. ‘Ahh, another shrink, another session.’ He thought. There had been several sessions with multiple counselors since the “incident” that landed him on the path to this assignment. Yes, he had some anger issues and a somewhat violent temper…he kept it fairly well controlled outside the holodeck and training rooms, but it did slip out now and then. Like the overblown incident that started all of this. He ducked as he stepped through the door of the councilor’s office, and smiled at the flustered looking woman inside. “Lieutenant O’Connell reporting” |

"Come inside, Lieutenant," Maya indicated to the sofa across from her. She was glad to see that the ship's security officer was physically more than capable of doing his job. She already felt a bit safer having him around. After the Lieutenant had seated himself, she continued, "This is a routine evaluation, Lieutenant. Just to make sure that you're clear for duty. As the ship's security officer, you're going to be on the front line of enforcing discipline on this ship, in addition to defending us from our enemies on and off the ship. From looking at your record, you're more than capable of the task." "I'd like to start by asking you how you feel about this assignment, and how it has been going so far?" <TAG Frank> |

Frank settled on the couch with a contented sigh, he leaned back with his hands behind his head and stretched out his knees bent off the end of the couch and his feet on the floor. “Honestly as far as the assignment goes, it could be a lot worse, I know this is supposed to be some kind of punishment slash last chance cruise or ship of screw-ups or however you want to describe it, but I’m just glad to be in space on a sturdy ship. And you can’t deny there are a lot of interesting possibilities here, both professionally and……..<he looks over and grins with a wink>….otherwise. So far things have been pretty calm, a few fights here and there in the lower decks, ‘specially between the Greenies and non-coms, and a few good stashes of contraband we’ve found but nothing major.” He looks over and grins. “So what’s the prognosis Doc? Am I crazy?” |

"Well, something's clearly wrong with you," the Counselor replied, only giving him a moment to worry, before adding, with a sly smile. "You have such a positive attitude, while everyone else has been so negative." Maya laughed. "I appreciate your take on things, Lieutenant. I suspect with that perspective you'll fine." "I have a few questions. Annoying hypothetical, psychological ones, so I apologize," she explained, "How do you think you'd handle a situation when you're enforcing discipline on the ship, and the troublemaker chooses to make it personal?" Maya personally had no problem with roughing someone up if they were completely out of line, but the Lieutenant was more than capable of killing half the crew with his bare hands. "What sort of things make you upset, and what ways do you control yourself when you get angry?" <TAG Frank> |

Frank chuckled once again. “I grew up as a trader so I’m used to people boasting and flapping their mouthparts. Any of my ‘charges’ that get too rude or feisty have been known to get a little ‘clumsy’, not falling down a lift shaft clumsy mind you, but, they have been known to run into a bulkhead or two on the way to the brig. When I do get to the breaking point I can usually bite back till I can get to a holodeck or training gym to work it out though sometimes I’ve been known to damage some inanimate breakables…..you know, desks, chairs, bulkheads…….but not too often” He grinned at her to show her he was kidding……mostly, then shifted a little, getting uncomfortable with delving deeper. “As far as triggers, there are a few that will get a reaction, my biggest trigger is someone taking unfair bullying or beating on a lesser person whether they are weaker, lower rank or whatever then trying to hide behind their position or regs to justify a cowardly act.” He looked at her again. Slightly tense for her reaction and from confessing to the sappy sentiment and hoping she wouldn’t need to delve much deeper past it, then forced a huge, cheesy, infectious grin across his face. “Oh yeah, and annoying, hypothetical, psychological questions get on my nerves too.” <tag maya> |

The Counselor laughed at his comment. She had, in fact, been a bit worried about triggering an outburst from O'Connell. So much so that, prior to their meeting, she'd calculated the chances of being able to stun him with the type I phaser she carried on her person, before he could get off the couch and throttle her or throw the coffee table at her. The probabilities said that Frank had a 90% chance of beating her in any scenario, so she'd given up on a contingency plan, and hoped for the best. Fortunately, things were turning out quite well. "I'll be sure to keep that in mind, Lieutenant," she replied, "I'm also a notorious bully, you should know." The things that made him upset would make most anyone who believed in justice a little upset. Maya certainly didn't judge him for getting angry about it, or even the occasions when he acted out. "My understanding of our crew is that many of that share the same feelings as you about the weak and the powerful. They resist authority or command, any command, because of a few officers and COs who might have abused their authority. Most of our crew have take rebellion a little too far," she finally said. "To the point where it's no longer healthy." "I don't have any of those concerns about you, Lieutenant. I absolutely think you're the right person for this job," The Counselor told him. "If it's ok with you, I might even send some of patients your way and you can show them how to utilize the holodeck as a healthy form of anger management." "You mentioned that you found some contraband, Lieutenant? What sort of things did you discover?" <tag Frank> |

“Nothing majorly illegal, a few bottles of liquor, some Ferengi holo-zines, that sort of thing.” Frank chuckled at the thought of the “confiscated” items, and the premiums replacements would bring on the unofficial black market every ship had. Most Sec/Tac’s were driven crazy trying to track them in their slow hours, but Frank’s upbringing gave him an insight into things that most officers did not have, namely that no matter how hard you crack down, how diligently you watch, if there is something you are not allowed to have, there will be someone who wants it and someone who has it and is willing to share…..for a price. His MO was, don’t stop, it control it (RoA188 ‘never run a race you haven’t fixed’) that way he knew the players and what was on the market and more importantly could limit the truly dangerous things whether he confiscated or bought…..of course all that was done through cutouts and false accounts so a trace wouldn’t: A, let the “Customers” know he was onto things and B, he could keep off any of the superiors radars. It kept things interesting for him, and the crew morale higher. He gave the counselor a trademark grin “Of course, if you’re looking for something in particular….” |

"If you come across a particularly good dry red wine, please send it, along with its owner, to my office," Maya replied with a sly smile. Frank was clearly an operator - his effectiveness came hand in hand with his unorthodox methods. She had no issue with the way he worked. "I find it fascinating that civilization, as a whole, is at it's greatest point... Hunger, disease, poverty. For the majority of us those things are of the past. Yet we can't help but engage in self destructive behavior," Maya mused. "In the absence of problems, we create our own." She leaned forward a bit. "I'm going to be a bit tough on you, Lieutenant, because I like you. Technically you should be the third most ranking officer on the ship. If our CO and XO butt heads so much that there is a power play, which one do you back, and why?" <tag Frank> |

Frank looked at the counselor with a thoughtful expression, images and scenarios flashing through his mind like an animator’s flip-book, pieces and parts of each scenario breaking and reforming as his mind tried to cover all possibilities. Some were discarded quickly while others lingered depending on probabilities derived from his assessments of each player; both his tactical training and more shady past added and discounted variables. Hayakawa was the duly appointed commander of the ship, placed by Fleet Command for good or ill (or set up for failure if scuttlebutt was true) yet she was definitely volatile and could very easily crack under the pressure of the various forces put on her by the nature of this assignment and “varied” crew. Freeman on the other hand was a bit of a wild card, his history (at least as much of it as Frank had been able to find so far) was checkered at best. Brilliant on his own but as a team player he seemed more likely to follow his own best interests rather than common good…although some altruistic leanings flickered through from time to time. He flaunted authority (which, considering Frank’s own past, was not a black mark in and of itself), he always seemed on the lookout for the next bit of fun or practical joke, ultimately he seemed to be an adrenaline junky in search of the next high without paying attention to the long term consequences which could be a serious problem if backed in a command coup. As the scenarios solidified in Frank’s mind only one conclusion, one answer could be made, though he had to give the Doc a hard time. “At this point Doc” he chuckled ruefully,” I’d be more inclined to put YOU in charge than either one of them, but ultimately the welfare of ship and crew needs to be put first so it would depend on the actual situation." "Oh and I think I have a good line on that wine, a '34 Rom....er Vulcan that I came across, ranked third in the top 10 vintages from this century at last years competition on Risa" He Grinned again at his "slip" of the tongue, knowing she would have caught it anyway <Tag Maya> |

Maya sat back, smiling to herself, as Frank's mind played out the various scenarios of power struggles between CO and XO. He was a tactical thinker. Most importantly - he was a thinker, unlike the majority of his crewmates. He didn't shoot his mouth off without considering the implications, and didn't seem like the type who would needlessly hurt another person with his words. Though his thoughts took but an instant, Maya recognized in that moment that Frank was trustworthy, wiser than he let on, and would be the bedrock holding this ship together if things fell apart. "I think the person best equipped to command this ship in the absence of sane senior officers is sitting right across from me," Maya replied, implanting the thought with a strong caveat. "Recognize that your job is to make sure that never has to happen." "The Commander needs you on her side, Lieutenant, so I suggest you try and make friends with her. She understands how to control ones anger better than you might think. Maybe some of your commanding presence will rub off on her," she continued, with a smile. "As for your nice sounding 'Vulcan' wine, I confess that the stuff knocks me out after one glass. I'm sorry to say I wouldn't be able to handle it..." Maya replied, "But if you start hearing reports of thefts of fine wines from the lower decks, I may or may not be the culprit." She winked. "Unless there's anything else, Lieutenant, I think we're just about set here." |
