::Two days after the 1st Attack::

Dr. Takagi hadn't had time to meet the ship's medical officer prior to the recent battle. The two of them would have to work closely together to address the medical care of the crew. Unfortunately, the CMO was a casualty of the attack, and in his place his second in command, one Dr. O'Connor, had ascended to head of the department.

After his actions during the battle, Maya had no doubt that, medically speaking, the crew was in good hands under Doctor O'Connor's care. He had acted capably under fire, even under tense conditions. Lives had been saved.

Dalek's record showed that he was an excellent physician, who had conducted cutting edge research. He should've been attached to Starfleet Medical Institute, where his work could be further utilized to save countless lives.

Instead, his personal problems had led him to the Renaissance, where they could continue to be a liability.

For her own part, she was apprehensive about working with another Betazoid, especially a functional, emotionally healthy one. Their culture was built upon honesty and transparency, while she was accustomed to secrets and deceptions. She anticipated their meeting of the minds, so to speak.

Dalek was excited when he received the order to meet with Dr. Takagi. He missed Betazed and the confidence that came from speaking openly, or rather, not even having to speak. He couldn't read minds like his mother, and the other full Betazoid people, but he was a keen empath.

As he entered the office of the counselor, Dalek immediately sensed apprehension from Maya. He smiled kindly, the programmed response to this feeling. "Good morning, counselor.", he said as he neared her for a formal Betazoid greeting, placing his forehead to hers. "Very nice to meet you, finally. I was beginning to wonder if you even existed.", he laughed a little as he sat down across from her and leaned back on the couch. "So, what are we doing today? Formal psych eval?", he asked, assuming that would be the only reason she would have summoned him. She hadn't sought him out socially thus far, which probably meant she wasn't too interested in a friendly chat.

Maya adjusted to his presence as he entered the room. The emotions she projected were a combination of shyness, curiosity, and warmth, which spiked a bit as he greeted her in the traditional way. His presence was gentle and she was surprised by the way he eased into her office.

As they touched foreheads she opened her mind, or at least gave the impression that he could read her openly. The Doctor could sense surface thoughts and emotions, which were very focused on him, with hints of her reflected experiences of the past few days underneath.

She simultaneously connected with a deeper part of Dr. O'Connor's thoughts and feelings, but didn't dig or poke further.

~My apologies, Dr. O'Connor,~ Maya spoke to him telepathically, her smile a bit coy. ~I haven't yet had time for social calls. Please don't be offended. I am happy to see you, of course. And to be able to finally speak with someone. However, there has been quite a lot of work to get through.~

~Which also answers your question. Yes this is something of a formal evaluation, and something of a conversation about how we can best work together in our respective fields.~

Though she had let him in to her mind, Dalek was a savvy enough empath to sense that she exhibited strong mental control over herself. He knew that her feelings, and her attitude, were sincere - but anything deeper was much more obscure. She certainly was not an open book.

~I know that past few days have been rather hectic for you as well, given the way this new responsibility was thrust upon you. So thank you for taking the time.~

She trusted that he wouldn't be like the usual Renaissance crew-member, forcing her to pry every bit of truth and honesty out of him. ~Can you tell me about how things are going so far - whatever it is you want to express - and we'll start from there?~

Dalek grinned slightly at the telepathic intrusion, and instantly relaxed his mind. He never missed home so much as he did on the rare occasion he got to connect with another Betazoid.

A bit taken aback by the doctor's pleasantries - most Betazoids had a tendency to cut to the chase quite harshly - Dalek answered his colleague back with his thoughts.

~Yes. The responsibility of Chief Medical Officer was a surprise, and a bit difficult for me to handle at first, just emotionally. The circumstances under which this promotion occurred were heartbreaking, to say the least. I have no doubt that I can fulfill my duties though. I am quite a capable man.~, his grin widened as he felt her sifting through his emotions and finding that his confidence was in fact not a facade he hid behind, but rather very genuine.

Attempting to get a better feel for the woman across from him, Dalek locked his eyes onto hers and extended a feeling of intrigue as he concentrated deeply. She wasn't allowing him any further in. Maya was very guarded underneath the placid surface of politeness and professionalism. That was fine with Dalek. Being half-human, he had a unique respect for privacy not particularly shared by many others on his home world. He immediately backed off and returned to the much simpler and more manageable conversation.

~I apologize. I wasn't looking to uncover any skeletons, Doctor. I'm just curious about you. You're very different from most. As you can tell, I'm pretty much an open book. What you see is what you get. Fairly simple in that respect. You're welcome to poke around as much as you want... I'd sure like to poke around in you.~ Dalek smiled big and shrugged. The imagery of a fantasy encounter with her unintentionally flashing through his mind.

~You must be used to that by now.~, he thought, as she seemed to tense up.

The Counselor blushed slightly but maintained eye contact. She was accustomed to using others' attraction to her for self benefit, but it was difficult to deflect that attention when directly connected to her admirer. She let his fantasy linger in her mind, long enough for him to know she was focusing on it, before letting it drift away.

~It seems like you've done quite a bit of poking around on this ship already, Doctor,~ Maya responded, mirroring his grin. ~Your bed has rarely been cold since you arrived on board.~

She didn't dig around in his head for his intimate memories to gain the information. In fact even as those thoughts emerged in his mind at her mentioning, she deliberately chose not to engage them. ~In fact I've had evaluation sessions with some of the lucky ladies. You left quite an impression. Though I must confess I didn't take notes.~

Cutting to the chase. ~So I'm sorry to have to tell you that such behavior must come to an end. Now that you're the Senior Medical Officer aboard the Renaissance, it is extremely unprofessional and dangerous for you to be sleeping with our junior staff and crew.~

Maya understood O'Connor's behavior. Intimacy was a cherished part of their culture. He was neither manipulative nor cruel in his amorous pursuits. There wasn't anything wrong with it, except for what appeared to be pointless rules and regulations. She hoped that she hadn't hurt his feelings.

Dalek chuckled out loud at the counselor's retort. His grin subsided slightly, leaving behind a mischievous smirk as nodded his head knowingly. He knew it was only a matter of time before the whip began to crack again. He could sense Maya's understanding, but also knew that she meant full well what she said.

~Well, Doctor Takagi. You already know that I can't make any promises. I've been down this road many times before, and, well, you know what happened. I'm very familiar with the rules against fraternization, but I honestly fail to see how sharing yourself with another in one of the most beautiful and honest ways imaginable could be anything but positive. I'm not in command of the ship, or security, or the marines. I'm a doctor. I celebrate life and all the beauty it affords in it's many shapes and forms. What happens in my bed... What I do with my body, is no business of Starfleet Command.~

Dalek allowed himself to indulge in another round of arousing fantasizing as his eyes traveled down the counselor's body. She was fascinating, and mysterious, and one of the most angelic women he'd ever seen. And it was true, there were few things in the universe better than making love to a Betazoid woman. The smile returned to his face as he leaned forward in his seat, staring intensely into Maya's dark brown eyes.

~Perhaps you'd like to drop by my quarters around 1800 hrs? I have a lovely bottle of California Merlot that I've been saving. What do you say, Counselor? You're not a junior officer... We wouldn't be breaking any rules if we had a little dinner and drink together, would we?~

~No. We wouldn't,~ the Counselor agreed. She let that thought hang there.

~What you're not considering in your defense of your behavior, which I agree with in principal by the way, is the responsibility that the Chief Medical Officer has to his patients,~ Maya returned to the previous point. ~Consider the following scenarios.~

~Scenario number one - A past paramour becomes pregnant by another crewman and is afraid to seek proper medical attention from you. Number two - the events that led to your promotion are probably just the first of many attacks that this Starship will have to endure, people will die, or need to be saved, and you will be responsible for making very difficult decisions about life and death What if more than one of your lovers is critically injured in sickbay, amongst many other casualties. Who would you save? Number three - which is perhaps the most important, is that many of our crew face significant emotional and psychological trauma that isn't necessarily healed by having casual sexual relationships. In any situation, given your position, an ethics charge can be filed against you, and you could lose your license? ~

Maya wasn't lying, and her assertiveness made it clear that she believed the risks to the Doctor's career were quite real. ~Personally, I would not want that to happen to you. I think you're an incredible talent, medically speaking. In fact I believe I've personally benefited from some of your recent research.~

~There are a few facts working against my hypothetical arguments, of course. There are multiple physicians on board, myself included, capable of dealing with any range of medical issues. You are as capable as I am of assessing the emotional state of anyone you choose to spend your time with, but...~

Maya paused and recognized that she was going on a bit long, and also that Dalek was still maintaining his intense gaze into her eyes. Maybe she was going on about this all wrong.

~Look, Doctor, I'm a psychiatrist not a lawyer. I can't convince you of anything,~ she confessed. ~But if you can abstain from any promiscuous behavior for one whole month, that's 30 days, then I'll have dinner with you. In fact I'll make you dinner. And I'm an excellent cook.~

Dr. Takagi hadn't planned on serving herself up on a platter, so to speak, but the likelihood of him being able to comply was slim. And if he was up to the challenge, then she'd just figured out how to treat his addiction.

Dalek took note of all the counselor's points. Though all perfectly valid possibilities, these were of course all challenges he'd considered before. He had, in fact, faced a couple of those scenarios once or twice, thus resulting in his being assigned to the Renaissance. Her concern was genuine, and he appreciated that.

When Maya presented her "30 day challenge", Dalek's jaw clearly dropped. Laughing quietly, he shook his head in near disbelief. An ultimatum? That's how she wanted to play this? He could sense the lack of faith she had in him, which was slightly disheartening. He was not accustomed to rejection, but he was accustomed to meeting and exceeding challenges.

Dalek sat back and folded his arms as he pondered the idea for a minute, weighing the options and making no effort to hide his decision-making process from Maya. Could he go 30 days without sharing himself with another soul? Sure he could. But did he want to? No. He did want Maya, but he didn't want her like that... He didn't want her to be some kind of reward for jumping through hoops like a trained Yorkie. No. He wanted her to want him back. Sex was not a motivational tool to be played with... To be dangled in front of his nose like a carrot to a donkey. Though he seemed like the typical playboy, he wasn't led around by his dick. If it wasn't going to happen naturally with a girl, it just didn't happen. He could deal. It wasn't that she wasn't worth giving up other girls, he was sure of that. It was that he was his own man, with integrity. Was this integrity, or rebellion? Perhaps it was a bit of both.

~What a shame. We would've had a truly amazing time together.~, he conveyed through thought, accompanied by a playful smile. ~I'm fairly self-aware, counselor. I know that my actions have consequences, and I've learned to deal with them. It may surprise you to learn that I honestly do desire that one special girl that I can share my life with. I really do. But until I find her, I've got no reason to be alone. I know you can sense that I don't do "alone" well. It's a weakness I have. And I know this is the root of the majority of my problems throughout my life and career. I long for the companionship, and the togetherness. The intimacy. The way I can make a woman feel. Not just a warm body. And honestly, for as good of a doctor as I am, I'm an even better lover. Why keep it to myself? It's much better for me to spend my time making someone feel good, than to sit around twiddling my thumbs and building up a lot of mind-clouding angst.~

Dalek felt the counselor's frustration, and was immediately remorseful for making her job difficult. He knew she was only trying to help him, and he didn't mean to throw it back in her face. At that moment he made a decision that he hoped she'd recognize and appreciate. Even if only a little.

~I know I said I couldn't make any promises, but I'm going to make one to you, right now. I'm going to make a sincere effort to not jump into bed with every girl who's willing. I have been living a bit like an animal, especially as of late. I admit it. I can't say I'll not sleep with anyone for any set amount of time, but I'll be more, selective, if - when - I do. And you don't have to worry about dinner, Counselor. If you decide you'd like to spend some time with me, you know where to find me.~

Dalek gave a playful wink before continuing, ~Don't think I'll be giving up on you though.~

Maya was actually pouting a bit. Her lower lip curled in as she listened to him outline his philosophy. Even though she was disappointed that her gamble had failed, she also felt comfortable around the Doctor, which was a rarity amongst her own people.

He was honest about his own thoughts and emotions, and respectful enough not to push into her own. He was able to bluntly state his fear of being alone as the cause of his behavior. She wished everyone on the Renaissance would be so easily to deal with. On a personal and physical level, he would be a safe match for her. Perhaps it would just take some time to draw him in and pin him down.

~I appreciate your efforts to be more considerate in your affairs. I know that you're sincere, and I'll hold you to your affirmations,~ The Counselor replied. Her tone was once again cool and professional.

~But I'm far more stubborn than you are, Doctor,~ she confessed, ~So I'll stick to my original terms, and you can start the clock whenever you'd like. Sooner rather than later, I hope.~

~Professionally speaking, my office is open any time you'd like to chat.~

And it was time to just be colleagues again, and let the flirtations end. ~There's a few others things I'd like to discuss, mostly logistical, if there's nothing more you'd like to say...~

Dalek's grin was glued to his face. He was certainly intrigued by Maya. Instantly recognizing that her rejection was probably what made him want her more, he decided he'd have to up his game considerably.

~Stubborn, huh? There's something else we have in common. It's alright. I like a challenge. No promises on adhering to your terms, counselor. If I were to abstain, as you so put it, it would be my choice, and it wouldn't be because I want a night with you. It would be because I want something much more meaningful. You think you could deal with that?~

Dalek's mind slipped back to thoughts of his first, and only, girlfriend. Back on Betazed, he'd made plans to ask for her hand in union. He was already thinking of names for the children they would have, and considering planets they could settle on when the fire happened. He'd left his office at the usual time, and stopped by a shop to get some wine and flowers when the feeling of something terrible overtook him. By the time he got back to their apartment, the entire building was engulfed in flames. She was still alive when the firefighters brought her out, but badly burned. The image of her charred flesh was etched into his memory for an eternity. She died two days later. That was what drove Dalek into research, and also to starfleet; where he had an escape, and more of an opportunity to perfect his skin regeneration treatment.

His heart sank at the recently drudged up memories and he shook his head. Instantly realizing that Maya was still in his thoughts, he sat back up straight and felt almost embarrassed that he'd allowed his mind to wander like that when he was in the middle of flirting with the lovely doctor.

~Sorry. That was... A long time ago. I don't know why that even entered my mind.~

Maya sat up as the sadness welled up inside of him. She was curious about his emotions, and his sense of loss, filing through the memories as they came at her.

Even the most controlled empath would be deeply moved by Dalek's painful memories. While Maya certainly felt sad for him, in his vulnerable moment he could sense that she was projecting her feeling of sadness, rather than reflecting his own back at him. Their empathic connection was slightly strange, and behind the feelings that she was sharing with him, he felt hints of something solid and cold, like a stone wall.

~You don't have to apologize for sharing. I'm very sorry for your loss,~ she soothed him, easing the difficult memories of loss aside but allowing him to focus on the happy memories of his lost love. Moments of joy, of closeness.

Though he couldn't quite feel it, she was pleased. Not pleased that he had suffered and lost the woman he loved, but pleased because he had a pure idealized, innocent lover to put on a pedestal.

Maya was happy that she could never compare to or compete with the woman he had lost, and thus would never be put on a pedestal herself. It relieved her of the burden of having to be perfect.

She was also quite certain he didn't share these memories with the other women he had seduced onboard the Renaissance.

Maya guided him through those joyful memories so that he was present again, happy rather than sad. She wanted to see more, but now wasn't the time.

~I think it would be quite healthy for us to develop a more meaningful relationship, Doctor,~ Maya confessed.

She slightly regretted that there was between 30 and 387 days before they could take thing to the next level, depending on whether he took up her challenge immediately or waited til after he'd had his way with every other physically compatible female on the ship.

Still she probably needed time herself to sort out her own mental skeletons and figure out how to protect herself.

~Thank you for trusting me. I know it's because I'm the Counselor, and I'm a Betazoid, but you can trust me because I'm me. I won't ever use anything you tell me against you. Even though I feel like a bit of an ass for not sharing so much...~

"Which brings me to a professional matter I wanted to discuss, actually," she suddenly spoke out loud. It was important that her session audio recording picked up this part. She pointed to the PADD on the coffee table in front of him. "That's a list of pharmaceuticals that I am not allowed to prescribe or administer, by any means."

The list contained almost every known psycho-stimulant, many of which the ship's Psychiatrist would routinely prescribe. "In the event that a patient needs these drugs for treatment, I will refer them to you. You'll be responsible for prescribing and administering the dosage and monitoring usage."

Maya didn't have to flat out tell him that she had an addiction. It was unsaid. "Every two weeks you'll have to perform a blood test on me."

She was worried what he thought of her, but this was information she was required to tell the Chief Medical Officer. ~I'm not a junkie, Doctor. I was held hostage by a group who kept me awake, medically, for 65 Earth Days, because they were paranoid that I could use telepathy in my sleep. Relapse is an expected part of recovery... so, well that's what this is all about.~

Her tone was distant. Maya suddenly wanted to be very far away from this man. She'd stupidly mixed personal affection into what was supposed to be a professional relationship and was now confused.

"I guess maybe we're finished here?"

As Dalek tried to push the painful memories to the back of his mind, he felt Maya playing interior decorator with his thoughts. Her mental control was nothing short of astounding. Well-honed, as if she'd been trained to use her abilities as a weapon.

Instead of dwelling on that aspect of her, Dalek allowed her to full access as the joyful memories began washing away the pain. He knew he could trust her. He wasn't sure why, but she didn't have to reassure him. This connection they shared was certainly not a normal one. Even his own mother hadn't been able to comfort him so effectively.

When Maya began speaking aloud, Dalek jumped slightly out of shock. The switch between telepathic and audible communication had always affected his brain that way. She pointed out the PAD on her table, and he picked it up. He listened to her intently as he scanned through the list of meds. He knew what it meant when she said she wasn't allowed to prescribe or administer these drugs. Normally, his first thought would have been to assume a willing drug abuse problem, but his mind didn't even go in that direction. He'd have been able to sense that immediately.

"I understand, counselor. And though I'm not entirely familiar with some of these medications, I'll certainly study up on them tonight. I don't administer anything without knowing every possible outcome, side effect, and treatment. Won't be a problem though. It'll be more convenient once we get sickbay repaired, I'll be right next door all day."

As she connected with him again telepathically, Dalek felt a great sadness mixed with anger at her situation. He was appalled that someone would put another person through something so brutal. Even more so that someone had done such a barbaric thing to Maya. The shock of what she revealed resonated through his body and into her.

~Maya, I'm so sorry that happened to you. You're lucky to be alive. I assume I'll never know why you were in such a position, and I'm fine with that. I would like to run some tests on you immediately though. We're still getting things sorted, so I haven't had the chance to complete the crew physicals yet, but your turn would be coming around eventually anyway. I'm going to schedule you for this evening, as soon as your shift is completed. You may have a clean bill of health from Starfleet, but as your doctor on board, I need to know where you are physically. That kind of exposure to those kinds of drugs has lasting effects, as I'm sure you're well aware.~

Dalek mentally scolded himself for not getting to her before. He'd been well-busy settling in and establishing routine before taking on the duties of CMO, and up to his neck in treatments and procedures after. He had scanned her personnel file briefly before the battle, but nearly everything in it had been classified. Now, after this meeting, he was fairly sure he knew why.

"Yes, it seems that's everything. Thank you, Counselor. Swing by sickbay once your shift is over and we'll get your physical out of the way."

Dalek stood up and approached Maya, running his hands softly up her arms to her shoulders and placing his forehead to hers again. ~Thank you.~, he conveyed with a feeling of gratitude mixed with concern for her.

Maya held on to him a little longer than she should have. It was nice to finally communicate with one of her own people. Particularly one who wasn't trying to evaluate her or test her mental control.

For a second she became a bit paranoid, and thought that perhaps he was evaluating her. This was all just a test to see how soft she'd become. But she worked to excise the thought as soon as it emerged, and just enjoyed being close to him.

~You fix me and I'll fix you, hmmm,~ she could get a little sarcastic when she was uncomfortable. She leaned her head back but still kept her arms on his. ~That sound like a fair deal?~

Maya finally let go of his arms and escorted him to the door.

"I'll see you in sickbay, Doctor. Don't forget to lock the medicine cabinet."

Dalek had finished his shift, and decided he'd clean up a bit before Dr. Takagi made her way to sickbay for her scheduled physical. Maya had been on his mind heavily since their earlier meeting. He was genuinely worried about her, and had read through her file thoroughly as soon as he'd gotten back to his office.

Stepping out of the shower and drying himself off, he continued to think over her proposition. 30 days. He wondered if it would be worth it to set aside his pride and take her up on it. Maybe he'd get a better handle on her when she was in HIS domain. He got a fresh uniform on and fixed his hair before brushing his teeth for the seventh time today. Dalek was perhaps a bit overly-obsessed with oral hygiene, but being a doctor, he knew all too well the amount of bacteria that grows in the mouth. It was but one of his many quirks.

As he walked out of the physician's shower room, Dalek walked over to his desk to resume work on his seemingly never-ending stack of paperwork. He was anticipating this check-up a little too much, so the charts and assessments were a welcomed distraction.

Dalek's heart jumped every time the doors to sickbay hissed open. Oh come on, Dalek, keep it cool., he scolded himself. It was silly, the way he was being affected by this woman. Deciding then not to pay any attention to the entries and exits of the med center, he buried himself in medical charts, and before he even knew it, he sensed the presence of one Dr. Maya Takagi.

Looking up from his desk, he smiled brightly and rose to greet the counselor. "Doctor Takagi. I'm glad you made it.", he said kindly as he greeted her with the formal Earth-style handshake. There were far too many people around sickbay for anything less formal. Dalek was nothing if not a consummate professional while in sickbay.

~Forgive the formalities... I'm very happy to see you again.~, he extended as he showed her to a sectioned off bed, secluded from the rest of the room by curtains. It was the closest thing they had to an exam room in this secondary sickbay. "If you don't mind removing your uniform and slipping into this?", he said, handing her a robe-like gown. "I'll be right back.", he assured her before exiting the curtained room.

~Well you’ve certainly managed to get me to take my clothes off quicker than I expected~ Maya zinged back at him as she undressed, certain that most of the tests he needed to perform could be conducted fully clothed. ~I hope you feel proud of yourself.~

She carefully hung up her uniform, which she was starting to enjoy wearing. Then she fixed her hair, which she’d similarly just washed. She pulled the hair up and pinned it carefully to the top of her head, so that it wouldn’t be in the way.

Maya took a moment to examine herself in the mirror. Without the dark color of her uniform, she worried that her eyeliner was too black. Beside that her skin was definitely a bit too pale.

One of the things she wouldn’t find on this ship was direct sunlight of any sort. So it would have to be found in one of the holodecks.

After her extended moment of self-critique, she recognized that she was stalling. She pulled on the gown. The garb was made to be useful, not comfortable, but it wasn’t rough.

She sat on the edge of the bed, her hands on her lap. She was a little nervous.

“You can come back in, Doctor,” she stated, waiting for him to step inside. “I’m impressed by how well you’ve organized this place, given the circumstances. Everyone appears to be working together quite well.”

It was a bit of idle chitchat really, there were a lot of people around.

She winked at him. ~Ok, let’s see how good of a Doctor you are.~
