Dalek couldn't help but chuckle at Maya's insinuation that the gown was unnecessary. ~Well, you could leave your uniform on, but it would just make things much more difficult.~

Standing outside the exam room, Dalek tried to keep his mind clear of impure thoughts. When Maya let him know she was ready, he swept the curtain aside as he entered and promptly closed it behind him.

"Thank you. Yeah, the entire medical staff has really pulled together over the past few days. A crisis has a way of doing that to people. We all entered this profession because we want to help people and save lives, after all. I'm quite proud of my crew here. We've turned from a rambunctious collection of misfits, to a focused group of medical professionals. Who'd of thought, huh?", he smiled as he placed one hand on the back of Maya's neck and guided her to lie back on the bed.

His hands were warm and strong as he picked up her right arm, accessing different pressure points in her hand and arm. He gauged her reactions, and repeated the routine as he walked around to the other side of the bed. He backed away and initiated the full-body scan. Reviewing the data on the screen in front of him, he grabbed a blood analyzer and placed her finger on the space provided. The readings instantly came back clean, as he'd expected.

~How have you been sleeping?~

Dalek moved toward the end of the bed as he listened to Maya, and began accessing pressure points in her foot and leg. ~I prefer a more hands-on approach to medicine. I assure you, I'm treating you no differently than I would any crew member.~ he conveyed, sensing her skepticism. He then sat Maya back up and began testing her reflexes, the old fashioned way. ~A machine can tell you how something should react, or how it thinks a body should feel, but sensing a person's reaction to different stimuli gives me a much better diagnosis.~

~How strong have the urges to relapse been lately? It's completely understandable, and expected, to be honest. Just as I can expect complete confidentiality with you, you have the same with me.~

Maya lay completely still as he examined her. She agreed with his methodology, even though it was strange being cared for rather than the caregiver.

She resisted the urge to tease him a little bit, as she could tell he was trying very hard to remain professional around her. Maya realized that the tension created by two of them remaining composed could have quite a pay off.

The body scanned confirmed data that Dalek had noted in her medical record. 20% of her skin had been regenerated in the past six months, primarily the left side of her body from her abdomen to her face. There were no scars. Three fingers on her right hand had been broken during the same period. Starfleet doctors had performed surgery on her abdomen to repair internal damage. All of these injuries were fully healed.

When he sat her up, her eyes focused on his. The intensity with which she focused on him made it unclear whether she was going to pounce on him or lash out.

She wasn't skeptical about his ability to be trustworthy. Instead, she understood that being honest with him now would eventually lead to complete openness. It was the greatest value of their shared culture, and the one that she rejected, even though she secretly wished to embrace it.

~Sleep is around three to four hours per night~ she explained, ~This is only slightly less than normal for me, and I imagine I'm just adjusting to the new environment.~

~As for my urges...~ she bit her lower lip ~There haven't been any, really. I've been a bit busy and flooded with new sensations. Meeting this crew, the battle. A lot of thoughts and emotions to process and keep me occupied.~

It had been a horrible feeling, when they'd first drugged her. Her captors knew about her empathic flaws, so they pumped her full of her own emotions. It was incredibly effective, and she became so wrapped up in herself, sometimes feeling good and other times bad, that she couldn't focus on controlling or reading the minds of her captors. Maya remained impressed by their brilliant strategy, while hoping that S31 had tracked down and killed the entire bunch.

~But eventually I will get bored. That's when it could be a problem. I'm going to stop caring about this work and I'll start to crave feeling something, anything, else.~

~I don't know when that will happen, it could be a year, it could be a few months. It could be never.~

Dalek moved around behind Maya as she explained her current state to him. He felt deeply saddened by her history. The pain she had been through, though she hid it very well, had taken it's toll. He couldn't understand how a person was capable hurting another in such a fashion, and it disgusted him to think of someone torturing Maya. He wanted so badly to hold her. To console her. She was very strong, but he could sense the pent up angst in her.

~That's to be expected, of course. You're in a unique position being someone that is aware of the possibility of relapse, and has accepted it. A lot people in your stage of recovery think they are fixed, and feel invulnerable to the cravings. So when the addiction does rear it's ugly head again, they're more likely to indulge because they feel they've failed. You also have support here. You have a big, strong, extremely handsome genius doctor that will be here for you anytime, day or night.~

Dalek pulled down the back of her gown, exposing her bare back and ran his hands over her tight shoulders, running his thumbs up the back of her neck to the base of her skull. Tilting her head down, he worked his hands over her muscles, immediately relieving a fair amount of tension she probably didn't even realize she was carrying. It was necessary for her to be as relaxed as possible for what was coming next.

~Perhaps in a month or so, said doctor will be keeping you plenty occupied.~ Dalek could sense his innuendo resonating in Maya's thoughts.

Getting back to business. ~With your permission, I'd like to take a sample of your spinal fluid. I've been doing some rather interesting research over the past year. A treatment I've been working on that would be quite beneficial in cases such as yours. It's a long way from being ready for any type of clinical trial, but basically, it would be a sort of chemical synaptic reset. It will repair neuro-pathways. See, the drugs you were exposed to, rewired your brain, damaging and bypassing the natural synaptic flow. This treatment would work to reboot the brain in a way, restoring it to it's original state. The recovery process as we know it doesn't repair all of those broken connections, but instead forces the brain to create new bypasses. This would take addiction recovery from years to literally days. The only chance of relapse would be intentional usage, not from the desire to quiet a craving, but from a conscious decision. May I continue?~

Dalek was confident that his research would pay off one day, and hopefully with Maya's help, that day would come sooner rather than later.

Maya was impressed by the Doctor's understanding of psychology and psychiatry. They lived in an era of hyper-specialization, and the fact that he could likely do her job as well as she could do his was comforting.

His massage was even more comforting. Maya imagined how easy it was for him to seduce women and became a little jealous. Not because of the other women, but because he was better at it than she was. Maya knew all the different possible ways to make another being feel good, but fundamentally didn't care how others felt unless it was her responsibility to help them. Dalek loved making others feel good. It was a motivating goal in his life and made him happy. Of course, he was better at it.

At the mention of his research she remained still, trying to hide her paranoia.

~I'm sorry, Doctor. There are plenty of others addicts on this ship. Maybe you can start with them?~

It wasn't the response he was looking for, and Maya really hated to disappoint him. She looked up at him.

~Can you down for a moment?~ she asked, nodding to a stool a few feet away. ~Thank you.~

~I'm going to tell you something that you were likely going to find out anyway, Doctor. I was anticipating that you would discover it while we were making love somewhere. If that was the case, in the throes of passion, with you in my head and me in yours... you'd be enjoying yourself too much to care about it.~

~But I suppose it's better that you know, as my colleague,~ she stated, and was about to continue before she added. ~You're not allowed to feel sorry for me or get all sympathetic or I'll scream at you.~

She sighed, made eye contact, and continued. ~Remember the official empathy testing we all take when we're around six years old?~ She forced some of the hundreds of visuals into his thoughts: puppies being kicked, children laughing, an old man with a tear in his eye, a field of graves, a couple holding each other...

~I failed that test. Five times in total, before I refused to take it anymore.~ Their people had all ranges of Empathic abilities, and some scored poorly on the testing. But those who failed were those born without the abilities at all, and tended to have a hard time fitting in. They all shared a stigma - some of the worst sociopaths in the galaxy were non-socialized Betazoids.

Maya didn't seem to be one of them, but neither was she like the majority of her people. She had come to terms with being different. Since she had no plans on setting foot on her homeworld ever again, she didn't feel ashamed except in the presence of others of her kind.

~In between the first test and the last, for four years, I had my wonderful little mind examined and treated by the finest Doctors on Betazed. They were all very nice people, they all wanted to help. But they couldn't do anything.~

~This is relevant to your very well-intentioned research only because my Betazoid doctors kept poor security on their records. I can't blame them - they had no real reason to. But my file likely fell into the hands of the people who captured me, which is the reason I'm naked and exposed being examined in your office right now.~

In the course of telling the tale, Maya had become quite upset, kicking her legs against the raised bed like an anxious child on a transport shuttle.

~So I don't want you to do any research on me, Doctor. I want you to dispense drugs that I can't prescribe to my patients, I want you to monitor my situation and test my blood every two weeks,~ she explained. She wanted him to become completely infatuated with her, but didn't say it outright.

~And I really want you to do that thing where you were rubbing my neck again, because I'm bloody stressed.~

She smiled finally. "Your staff must be wondering why we're so quiet."

Dalek was certainly caught off guard by Maya's declination, but he wasn't upset by it. Instead he tried to understand her reasoning before offering his rebuttal, if any. He sat down on the stool as Maya directed and folded his hands as he looked deeply into her beautiful nearly black eyes.

As she referred to the empathy testing from their homeworld, and forced the images through his head, he instantly looked away and his eyes were drawn to the floor. The testing was something he found excruciatingly cruel, and was lucky he'd never had to repeat it.

Dalek felt a need to comfort Maya on this subject, but he was worried how she would react. ~My family is quite unique. I grew up outside of a small town in the province of Metorie. As I'm sure you know, it's a much different and much simpler part of the world than where you were raised. My mother took my father's name instead of he taking hers, and we honored Earth customs as well as Betazoid. I was always considered a bit of an odd duck by any Betazoid standards. But, those who got to know me, eventually accepted me. I was lucky. I wish you could have had the same kind of opportunities I had. Being a senator's daughter must have had you under the proverbial microscope, and being different had to have been much more difficult for you. My point is, Maya... You can't help how you are born, or raised, but that doesn't mean you're broken, or bad. You're extraordinary. And anything you want to share with me, I won't judge you on. It takes all kinds. And before you scream at me, you should know that I can't help but feel sympathy for what you've gone through. I hope you can accept that about me.~

Dalek looked back up to Maya and gave her a kind smile. ~I respect your decision, and I will comply, of course. I didn't mean any offense. And never mind the staff. They're busy with their own work.~

She definitely had thrown him for a loop. He'd never met someone so complex, or so enticing. The more he learned about her, the more he knew he'd only scratched the surface. His fascination grew along with his interest. Suddenly he caught himself wondering how she would get along with his family. If his mother would like her. Stopping himself, he instantly prayed that she hadn't caught onto those thoughts. What was this woman doing to him?

His face brightened and he rose from his seat at Maya's request to continue his previous massage. Walking around the side of the bed to stand behind her, he gently ran his hands from her lower back up to her shoulders and moved his thumbs in circular motions around the knots in her upper back. He felt her loosening up in his hands, and closed his eyes to concentrate feelings of calm and peacefulness into each movement. She grew more receptive as she relaxed, and he struggled to hold back the kisses he desperately wanted to deliver to the back of her delicate neck.

As he worked his hands down her back, the images that came into his mind were far from professional. He pictured his lips meeting hers. Her mouth opening to him as he took her in his arms. His hands and tongue exploring her soft, warm skin. Suddenly realizing that she was sharing in the experience, he gently pulled her back against him and wrapped his arms around her tiny frame. Not daring to go any further, he simply held her.

~You are driving me crazy, you know that?~ Maintaining his embrace, he leaned his head down beside hers as he felt the heat from her bare back radiating onto his chest.

~I've put a lot of effort into it,~ Maya replied, her head tilting so she could look at him. ~Just so you know, the feeling is mutual.~

She considered breaking all professional and personal vows and seducing him right then and there. They could get away with it - no one would find out - but the subsequent shame of not being able to control themselves would turn the experience into a disappointment in retrospect.

~We should stop before we cross any lines,~ she said. Though she made no effort to move away from him, she ended the psychic affair that had started between them. Up to this point he was still examining and treating her addiction, despite the fact that they were also flirting with each other.

Maya wanted to hold onto her feeling of superiority over the rest of the crew for as long as possible. She knew she could be as bad as the others, but chose not to be. She absolutely could not break any rules or regulations or she'd lose all validity.

She thought about the gentleman who was pressed up against her, and whether he deserved to be tested and toyed with. The Doctor displayed almost as much self-control as she did, despite his tendency for indulging over the past few years. He had shown a willingness to be loyal to her, and was far kinder than he needed to be. He passed every test except for the one where she'd asked him to abstain.

Maya was rather curious about what would happen next. Was he so turned on that he'd find another willing partner at the first opportunity? Somehow she doubted it, but it was a possibility. He didn't seem like the person who could spend time with one woman while fantasizing about another. Most likely he would sublimate, focusing on his work, research, and hobbies. This was the desired result.

The Counselor slipped out of his arms and onto her feet. She let the gown fall to the floor. He could see her bare back, but it wasn't anything he hadn't already seen.

She walked to her clothes and started to get dressed. ~You're a good man, Doctor O'Connor. I don't imagine that I can make you much better, but I'm going to try my best,~ she told him quite earnestly, before glancing back at him and teasing. ~If you weren't such a rake, we'd be on our way home together right now.~

Dalek's patented mischievous yet charming grin returned to his face. ~Yeah. If only.~, he conveyed a little sarcastically. Giving her a playful wink, he turned around and grabbed the PADD that was her official medical chart and signed off on it.

He'd gotten exactly what he'd set out to get from Maya. A confirmation. There was no doubt in his mind now that she did indeed want him back. Though the 30 days was simply a formality, one that he was sure she would not budge no matter how much she regretted it now, it would be more than just jumping through hoops. He could sense the near sadistic pleasure she got from holding such control over him. It was one of the most frustrating and endearing things about Betazoid women. He also knew exactly how to proceed now. Over the course of the next month, he would be concentrating his efforts on courting Maya. Simply, and innocently. Whether he wanted to refrain from his extra-curricular activities or not, she had him right where she wanted him.

Breaking the telepathic connection, Dalek spoke aloud. "Well, counselor, everything seems to be in order. I'll see you back here in two weeks. But I'm sure we'll bump into each other before then.", he said with a wry smile.

Dalek sighed deeply at the counselor's perfect physique. This was going to be a long, cold, lonely month.

Game on.

Maya turned back to him as she zipped up her jacket. She sat down and slipped on her boots. As she looked at him she smiled and laughed at the ridiculous situation she'd gotten them both into.

Maya walked right up to him and touched her forehead to his. Then, just as she leaned away she gave him two kisses. Shy, tentative first date pecks on each cheek.

"Thanks for understanding, about the research," she explained, and then sauntered away.

"I am just down the hall, Doctor," she said, softly enough so that the rest of the medical staff couldn't hear. "So don't be a stranger."

She slipped through the curtain and was gone.

Maya certainly needed another cold shower, and time to think about whether she was doing the right thing or the wrong thing to this poor man.

When Maya approached him, Dalek lowered his head to hers and was pleasantly surprised to receive two unsolicited kisses from her. He closed his eyes and concentrated on the feeling of her soft, warm lips. Yep, he was in. It was but a matter of time now. He knew what she was doing, and he could play along. Hopefully they wouldn't all be blown out of the sky in the next month. It was a grim thought, but as the past week had shown them, a realistic possibility.

"I'll have to take you up on that, Doctor Takagi.", he replied softly.

As she exited through the curtains, Dalek shook his head at the ridiculousness of this situation. He knew he'd be getting much more use out of that holodeck gym equipment, and his research and writing would certainly benefit from the spare time he would be having now. Perhaps he'd even organize a game of Parrises Squares with the other senior officers. He was sure that O'Connell would be up for that.

Dalek exited the exam room and returned to his desk, figuring he may as well get some more paperwork done.
