“My type?” Alex asked, frowning slightly before shaking her head. “If I knew that I wouldn’t end up in the wrong kind of relationships...”

She knew that the woman was right in her warnings though. Alex herself had observed the crew reacting to the very obvious relationship between their CO and the MCO and whilst she both women were adults, and entitled to do whatever they wanted, it was unusual for a commanding officer to be so... public about it. There wasn’t a single person on board who didn’t know they were an item; although for her part Alex had made it clear she didn’t want to hear any gossip or speculation on the subject within her department.

“I guess someone like Mark, without the whole being clinically insane part,” she reasoned. “I don’t believe in types. Older, younger, male, female, blonde, brunette, red-heads... what difference does it make unless you feel that connection?”

Maya smiled. "I wasn't talking about age, sex, or species, hon. I was thinking more in terms of personalities," she explained. "One should be able to look over what sorts of traits they desire in a companion."

"My example, I seek partners who are highly intelligent but also exhibit significant humility," Maya told her. One wouldn't have thought that cold and aloof Counselor preferred shy brainiacs, but they seemed to be the most compatible with her, and if Maya was to go through her list of paramours, the majority would fall within the group. To be fair to Alex's point, in terms of type, Maya's academy roommate had accused her of having a 'Vulcan fetish.' Maya herself considered that phase in her life research on the emotionally controlled mind.

"I've found that knowing what I want means that quite easily avoid what I don't want, even though it doesn't necessarily mean that the right person is easy to find," she concluded. "So I'd suggest, as a manner of exercise, writing down a list of things that you liked and found positive... about Mark and anyone else who made you feel good in a relationship. You don't have to share it with me if you don't want to, but let yourself reflect for a bit... it could start to help you ask the right questions of yourself."

She chuckled. "This is almost the type of conversation best had over a nice bottle of wine, rather than in this badly lit office."

Realizing that was half an invitation, Maya smiled. "I think that two emotionally aloof but highly professional women such as ourselves could do worse than to try and make friends with one another. So I would be honored if you'd swing by after our respective shifts and help me deplete a rather lovely Malbec that my former coworkers gifted to me."

“I never decline an invitation which involves wine, so I’d love to,” Alex replied, accepting the offer. “It would be nice to have a girls night. And thank you, for the suggestion... I’ve never really sat down and thought about the right kind of guy for me. Which is maybe why it always goes wrong.”

At the last part she smiled ruefully. The truth could sometimes hurt but it was her own doing. If she had stopped to think about most of the relationships she had entered into, she probably wouldn’t have let herself become so involved or invested in something doomed to failure.

“And your office isn’t so bad,” she commented, glancing around. “You should see mine. Organised chaos springs to mind. I tend to find there is so many ideas, so many theories, going on inside my head at once that it tends to take over sometimes. I know where everything is, but heaven help anyone else. Do you mind if I replicate another coffee?”

With her consent she also read a question in Maya’s eyes. Crossing to the replicator Alex shrugged dismissively, “like I said, usually there is so much going on in my head it can be hard to switch off. I usually go to the gym, work out for a while and that tends to help but I worked late last night running diagnostics and didn’t get much sleep as a result... Coffee, black... Do you want anything?”

"No, thank you. I avoid consuming anything too stimulating while on duty... too much coffee would lead me to throttling my patients," Maya explained, "Though, I can see how it would be helpful when you have to spend all day and night doing scientific research."

She was thoroughly relieved that the icy tension had evaporated from the room, and that Alex was now opening up. In truth, the young scientist was quite self-aware and honest, despite of her past problems. Maya again felt bad that Alex was assigned to the Renaissance, where her promising career could be waylaid.

"Despite the joys of caffeine, I'm going to professionally recommend that you find a way to get at least six hours of sleep per night," Maya explained. "I know it's hard while setting up a lab, and trying to organize a new team, but do your best. I'm glad that at least you find time for physical exercise."

She reached down and lifted up the PADD that held Alex's file, signing off that she was cleared for duty. "Thanks, Alex, you're clear for duty. I hope our time together wasn't as bad as you feared it would be."

"What say you swing by my quarters at 21:00 hours and we can polish off a few bottles of wine? Just for a few hours. We need you to get your beauty rest."

Standing by the replicator, holding her fresh cup of coffee, Alex considered the suggestion of an alternative to caffeine and knew that was never going to happen. So much of her daily routine was fuelled by her undeniable addiction to the stimulant. Nevertheless she gave an warm smile, one of relief, when she was declared as cleared for duty.

“There aren’t enough hours in the day for that,” the science officer quipped, grinning, “but it sounds like a plan. And I’m usually back from the gym by then anyway so I can enjoy some wine without the guilt.”

She gestured towards the door, “I better get back to my mad house, I guess. See you at 2100. Oh, and thanks for the coffee!”

With that, and a parting wave she headed out of the office, instinctively feeling more at ease the moment she crossed the threshold. She immediately felt bad about just feeling that way. Maya seemed friendly enough and she clearly had her work cut out for her on this ship. It was just years of building up an aversion to psychologists in every shape and form that was going to take time to overcome.
