::USS Renaissance::
::Counselor's Office::
::1900 Hours::
::One day before the battle::

The Ship's chief operations officer currently had the incredibly difficult job of keeping the aging USS Renaissance functioning. His days were packed until everything was up and running. Thus Dr. Takagi wasn't able to schedule an appointment with him until well after their respective shifts had ended.

It was the type of job that required a calm, even temper and the ability to capably multitask. From her understanding of Lieutenant Beauvoir's record, he excelled in both areas, despite the circumstances that led him to the Renaissance. He was someone who had been punished for doing the right thing, in contrast to most of their shipmates. The Counselor was curious to find out how he felt about it.

It had been a long shift, which wasn’t really saying anything. They were all long. The last thing he wanted to do now was talk about his feelings. He thought about giving his appointment a miss and having a nice relaxing shower and going to sleep. Gods knew he needed all he could get.

But then the Counsoler would just have him removed from duty and although that would mean he’d get to catch up on his sleep, but then the ship would begin to fall apart, at a faster rate than it already was.

In the end duty trumped his need for sleep and he arrived at the Counsoler’s office 5 minutes early. Pressing the buzzer, he waited for her to invite him in. Pausing just log enough to straighten his uniform, he entered her office.

Finding a younger woman, that he would best describe as ‘cute’, dressed in Sciences blue inside, he said “I’m Lieutenant Beauvoir. You wished to see me, Ma’am?”

Maya had been in the process of fixing her hair and removing the bloodshot look from her eyes when Jason arrived, early. Of course the Operations officer would be beyond timely.

She tied her hair back and let him in.

"I know it's late, Lieutenant. It's ok to be cranky, I can handle cranky. Just be honest and we won't chew up to much of your time, ok?" the Counselor greeted him with a wink. "I made some tea. Help yourself."

The coffee table near the ratty sofa displayed a simple Japanese ceramic tea pot and a cup, in addition to a glass of water.

Maya sat across from him. "I know that you've been extremely busy. I'd like to hear about how things have been going for you so far, especially in dealing with other members of the crew. Are you getting a sense of how to work with them?"

Jason smiled. 'Why would he lie? That would be counter-productive.' He may not want to be there, but lying wasn't going to help.

At the offer tea, Jason said "Doomo arigatoo", took a seat and poured two cups, handing on to her, he took the other for himself.

"I haven't had much of a chance to interact with them, other than on duty and so far, I've had no cause to complain."

"As for a sense of how to work with them, as long as everybody does their job well and I'm allowed to do my job without undue interference, I don't foresee any problems working with this crew."

He took a sip of his tea. "This is very good tea. Grown, not replicated, I take it?"

"My grandfather runs a restaurant in Los Angeles," Maya explained, "Ever since he moved to Earth he's become something of a connoisseur of real things."

Jason seemed to be a closely guarded individual. He wouldn't be forthcoming, but didn't seem interested in wasting time on mind games either.

"So no one's given you any trouble yet, hmmm?" she continued, "That's good news. That means you must be doing something right."

"Maybe we should put you in charge of this ship," Maya quipped.

She suddenly sat up straight and changed her tone. "If there was common sense in the universe, you would already be a Lieutenant Commander by now, well on your way to your own command. I'd like to talk a little about how you ended up here, the reason you got into trouble, and what led to you lash out like that..."

Jason smiled. “Maybe, I’m just good at staying out of every body’s way.”

When Maya made her joke, he laughed and said “Me, in charge of this ship? No thanks, Ma’am.”

Maya's change in tone, signalled to Jason that she was about to ask the hard stuff. "Ma'am, in my experience, I’ve found that ‘common sense’ is a very rare commodity.” He stated before starting his story.

“I’m here in part to due to my own foolishness and partly because Captain Cresswell of the Montana despises me.”
Jason thought back to the first day that Cresswell had taken command following the former Captain’s promotion to the Admiralty. “When the Captain came aboard, he took a instant dislike to me, he’d give me major punishments for minor infractions, culminating in my demotion for disobeying a direct order.” He sighed. ”That was the final straw. I lodged a complaint with the XO, but it was ignored, so I want and got drunk and picked a fight with a pair of Klingons. I’m not sure why I picked that fight and I never meant for that security officer to get hurt.” He may not know for certain, but he had a few theories.

"You almost threw away your career, your excellent career, because some jerk Captain was picking on you," Maya reminded him.

"What they did to you was unfair," she agreed, "But I think you could have fairly applied for a transfer and, within a year or so, another, better CO would've undone the damage to your record."

She smiled. "I don't need to chew you out, Lieutenant. I sense that you're remorseful for what happened, and you've certainly paid for it. I guess what I'm asking is if you feel that you can leave behind your resentment and bitterness for your former CO, and continue to thrive in Starfleet in spite of him, rather than to spite him."

Jason took a couple more sips of his tea. “Fate’s a strange thing, Lieutenant.” He said with a smile. “A few months after my court martial, he tried the same BS on one of his other officers. An officer that wasn’t as ‘accommodating’ as me and who had an uncle in the inspector general’s office. Suffice to say Captain Graham Cresswell was found guilty on several counts of conduct unbecoming an officer and given a dishonourable discharge.”
He laughed. “It seems that my ‘little tantrum’ not only almost ended my career, but helped to end his as well, so to answer your question, I’ve got my revenge so now I ready to be a productive part of Starfleet again.”
Sighing again, he said “I’m just not sure they want me any more, if my assignment here is anything to go by.”

it wasn’t that he thought that he deserved to be assigned to the flagship of the fleet, it was just that he knew what the Renaissance was. It was the place Starfleet put all their talented screw ups. The ones they couldn’t afford to discharge.

"So you don't really want to be here, is that it?" Maya inquired, rhetorically.

Most of the crew had these same feelings. Starfleet was mocking them rather than discharging them. Sending them to the minor leagues, rather than allowing them to pursue their lives elsewhere.

"Jason, there's a reason you're here, and it's not because of the stupid things you've done," she told him, addressing him casually. "It's because of your bravery, and your ability to follow your conscience over the regulations."

"A lot of your crewmates flaunt the rules for no reason whatsoever. They don't trust senior officers, who expect to be followed due to their rank, not due to their intelligence," the Counselor continued. "On the Renaissance, you're an example. And a role model, if you want to be."

"Actually, I'm not giving you a choice in the matter," she said with a smile. "Each of us has a little part to play. Commander Hayakawa gets to be the stern one. Mr. Freeman intends to be everyone's friend. And you'll have to show others how simply to be an effective Starfleet officer, one that they can trust to do the right thing."

"Look at it this way. While the CO, XO, and Mr. Hannah have been jockeying to outdo one another, who's the one who has been working tirelessly to bring this ship up and running?"

Jason blushed slightly at Maya’s praise. His self-esteem was so low, that even compliments made him uncomfortable.

"A role model, me?" Jason asked. He had never thought of himself as such. He just did his job to the best of his abilities. Occasionally he’d broken the rules, but never on a whim or for personal gain. He just did what he thought was right.

“Thank you for the kind words, Ma’am. I’ll do my best to live up to the faith you have in me.”

He almost laughed at the thought of being of being an example to the crew, but after Maya explained what she meant, he understood that everyone had a purpose other than their job and this was his. Thinking of his assignment as less a punishment and more an opportunity to help others, was starting to make him feel better about his lot in life.

"You've given me a lot to think about, Ma'am. If there's nothing further, I'd like to go to my quarters and get some much deserved sleep."

"There is one other thing, Lieutenant," Maya replied, "I'm considering that it might be useful to assign some of our more difficult crewmembers to work under officers who can be a positive influence. This wouldn't happen, of course, until the ship was running up to speed. But I'd like you to consider taking on the responsibility of nurturing a few bad eggs."

"As Commander Freeman reminded me, the majority of our crew are people who are very good at their jobs, but haven't been treated well in the past," she reminded him. "You can think on it, but I hope that you'd say yes."

She stood and extended her hand. "Otherwise that's it. Feel free to stop by anytime."

“Its an intriguing idea and I’m honoured that you think I’ll make a good mentor.” He smiled. “I’m afraid I can’t give you an answer, right now.“ He said managing to stifle a yawn. “But, I promise you’ll have it, once I’ve given the idea some careful thought and gotten some sleep.”

Jason stood, accepted her offered hand and shaking it he said. “It was a pleasure meeting and talking with you. Bonne nuit, Ma’am.” Before leaving her office.
