::Four days after the attack::

The senior Marine officer on the ship had been fortunate to survive her injuries. Thanks to the surgical work of the ship's new CMO, Renée was up and walking within a few days of being wounded. Though he didn't know it, Doctor O'Connor had saved more than Renée's life with his medical skills.

Maya was glad that the Major had survived. The unfortunate marine had the misfortune of being the only thing that Commander Hayakawa presently cared about. Thus, Renée played a more crucial role on the ship than she knew, one that would need to be continually leveraged until the Commander could bring the same amount of passion and concern to her job.

The Counselor allowed the Major adequate time to recover, get off the painkillers, and start interacting with her Marines again. She would certainly have earned their respect by taking a bullet for one of her team and surviving.

On the third day of her recovery, Renée received notice of the appointed hour of her interview with Dr. Takagi.

OOC: Since the second attack happens this day, I think we should end our long conversation with the attack taking place. Hope that works?

Reneé didn't mind trundling along to get 'brain checked' by Maya. The young counselor was attractive in her eyes. Not to say that she was looking to spend the night at Maya's if the chance arose. Simply that Reneé would exercise some patience with this whole ordeal.

She walked to Maya's office door. Given that her armour had melted onto her skin was enough to prove her recovery was remarkable. Reneé was tough, but even she had to spend some time under medical care. It felt good to get out of hospital gowns and back into the duty uniform. She chimed Maya's door and awaited an answer.

"Come in, Major. Have a seat," Maya said, standing as she greeted the Marine.

The Counselor's office was as bland and shabby as the rest of ship - containing furnishings that were likely older than both women. Maya did her best to make the room comfortable - the horrid overhead lighting was lowered to a tolerable level, but her only addition to the decor was a simple zen circle painting on wall above her desk.

Waiting for Renée to sit on the sofa, Maya took her seat in the opposite armchair. They were separated by a glass coffee table, upon which rested a jug of water and a glass.

"Thank you for coming, Major. I see that you're recovering well from your injuries," she stated as a formality.

Maya had met enough extremely pretty, extremely dangerous women to underestimate Renée based on appearance. Though it was easy to see, on looks alone, why the Commander was attracted to her.

"I've heard a lot about you, and I hope at some point we can discuss those rumors," she continued. "However, the purpose of our meeting here is a routine evaluation. Regardless, as ship's Counselor, I'm open to talking about whatever you wish to discuss."

"Tell me how you're finding life on the Renaissance, and your new post, in general."

"Rumors?" asked Reneé with a puzzled tone and an equally puzzled expression. She wasn't aware of any rumors. Then again that didn't mean that there wasn't some scuttlebutt about her. "Thanks for asking Lieutenant, my injuries are pretty much nonexistent thanks to the Doc's skills. Still...going to be hard to smell bacon cooking for a while."

She twiddled her thumbs as she sat up on the sofa, unsure of what to say next. How was life on board Renaissance turning out? It was a good question.

"It's different...I mean most of my postings have been planetary deployments. It's nice though. Crew have been...welcoming. Keep getting looks in the halls. It's the fact that it's a disciplinary vessel that makes it a challenge for me. I've not got any black marks against my name. Also...it's the only posting where the Commanding Officer has shoved me into guest quarters."

"Those would be the rumors to which I referred," Maya replied with a slight grin. "Though the other crew seem to think it was the turbolift, or transporter room B, or the ladies room of the officers' lounge."

She recognized that rumors could get out of hand, but telling stories about the Commander had become something of the main gossip on this ship of miscreants.

"At least we have some clarity on the exact location," Maya concluded. Seeing that Renée was about to freeze up and get defensive, Maya eased her with a gentle laugh. "Don't worry, Major. I'm not judging you, and I'm not going to chew you out..."

Renée was aware of the recommended policy in regards to fraternization between a ships CO and those under her command. She didn't need to be warned or reminded.

"In fact, I have to thank you," Maya stated surprisingly. "If you weren't sleeping with our CO, I imagine that she would no longer be in command of this ship."

Renée surely knew by now that her affection for Miko was the only real thing that propped up her self-worth and gave the Commander a sense of purpose.

Maya wasn't going to divulge anything that the Commander had told her about the Major.

At the same time, it was paramount that she figure how to leverage the relationship to be a net positive for everyone, rather than a liability - as she had witnessed a few days prior. She needed Renée as an ally just as much as she needed to continue as the confidant to their mentally unstable Commander.

"What's important to me, at this juncture, is that you understand that the success or failure or this ship's mission is dependent on the success or failure of this ship's Captain," Maya explained. "If she succeeds in becoming a capable commanding officer, there's hope for us. If not, we're all in serious trouble. Do you get what I'm saying?"

Reneé wasn't exactly sure what Maya meant. There wasn't much beating around the bush about it. Lucas' were known for their brash wording.

"So you're saying that because I let the commander screw my brains out till I'm seeing colours this ship is still together at the seams? I think that's a rather unfair assessment on her abilities as the CO don't you think?"

Maya smiled to herself when the Major showed her protective side. The Counselor admired loyalty above all other traits, even if it came in the form of defensiveness.

"I wouldn't put it so crassly, Major," she replied. "I would say that you've given our Commander someone to care about. This fulfills a fundamental human need, as without those emotional ties humans are... unhealthy. They can harm themselves or others."

Maya recognized that Renee would see her reasoning as vague, so she was as direct as she could be without betraying Miko's confidence. She found herself relying more on her intelligence training than her psychologist methodology. If Renee could read between the lines, she would understand what Maya knew about the Commander's feelings for her.

"Right now, the people she cares about could be counted on less than two fingers... we need to multiply that by at least 600. Her ship, her crew, her family, and the Federation should all be loved, for lack of a better term, though in different ways."

"So, despite your feelings to the contrary, I admire our Commander, who has not experienced the privileges in life that you or I have enjoyed, and has come to sit in this esteemed position. I am supremely confident in her potential to command this ship... However she has yet to realize that potential," Maya stated. "And our job as her senior staff, and her friends, is to make sure that happens."

"But since we're not here to talk about her, but rather about you, perhaps you can tell me how you think we can best help all of our crew realize their potential," Maya concluded. "And focusing the conversation on any specific individuals is your prerogative."

"I wouldn't be so sure of the Federation needing to be loved" said Reneé "It's just another government with it's faults like any other. Same corrupt officials, same idiotic policies."

She paused for a moment while she tried to plan on what to say. Reneé was proud to serve yes but she felt that the majority of the Federation's citizens gave unquestioning fealty, unconditionally.

You know was well as I do Ren...Federation is just like the Klingon Empire and the Dominion. Just looking for the next piece of real estate. All those policies? The Prime Directive? They're just excuses from scared officials too afraid to do the right thing. Thing is, can't stop defending it. It's like the father who comes home drunk and beats you and then offers a set of morals to why he beats you. You can't help but hate him, but you can't help but admire and listen to him either.

"I do my job because I'm proud of what the values of the Federation stand for. But I don't fight for the president or the people in the council. I fight for the average citizen who is lucky enough to be ignorant about war. We should all be so lucky. The Commander is a strong woman, I woman I admire as well. Not because of that uniform or the rank pips. Because inside there's someone wounded, and I want to be the one to make her see that life is worth living to it's full potential. Like her I can only count the people I truly care about on one hand. Thanks to her, it's up by one."

Maya listened to Renee's political musings with interest. She was certain that somewhere in her mind, the Major recognized that the very words she was speaking could have led to a swift execution were she a citizen of the Romulan or Cardassian empires, and that they were partaking in some essential freedoms by the very nature of their conversation.

Yet they were not their to discuss politics. Beyond matters of rhetoric, Renee's basic motivating life goals were just and true, both in terms of her duty to the citizens of the Federation, and her commitment to Miko.

"I believe we have the same goal then, when it comes to the Commander," Maya replied. "I expect that it can be challenging, dealing with a partner who has occasionally feelings of low self-worth. How has it been for you?"

On the Renaissance, Dr. Takagi was encountering a range of emotional problems that she hadn't seen since medical school. The past few years of her life had been spent working along the most emotionally confident, capable people in the Federation (screwed up in their own ways, but excellent at their jobs). Now she was stuck with patients who were almost the opposite, with diagnosable emotional problems.

"What are some other challenges that have come up and way's that you've been dealing?" she asked, recognizing that it was her job as the Counselor to be a support system.
